Performance assessment of the HERD calorimeter with a photo-diode read-out system for high-energy electron beams

The measurement of cosmic rays at energies exceeding 100 TeV per nucleon is crucial for enhancing the understanding of high-energy particle propagation and acceleration models in the Galaxy. HERD is a space-borne calorimetric experiment that aims to extend the current direct measurements of cosmic rays to unexplored energies. The payload is scheduled to be installed on the Chinese Space Station in 2027. The primary peculiarity of the instrument is its capability to measure particles coming from all directions, with the main detector being a deep, homogeneous, 3D calorimeter. The active elements are read out using two independent systems: one based on wavelength shifter fibers coupled to CMOS cameras, and the other based on photo-diodes read-out with custom front-end electronics. A large calorimeter prototype was tested in 2023 during an extensive beam test campaign at CERN. In this paper, the performance of the calorimeter for high-energy electron beams, as obtained from the photo-diode system data, is presented. The prototype demonstrated excellent performance, e.g., an energy resolution better than 1% for electrons at 250 GeV. A comparison between beam test data and Monte Carlo simulation data is also presented.

FLEAM: A Federated Learning Empowered Architecture to Mitigate DDoS in Industrial IoT

The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is detrimental to the industrial Internet of things (IIoT) as it triggers severe resource starvation on networked objects. Recent dynamics demonstrate that it is a highly profitable business for attackers using botnets. Current centralized mitigation solutions concentrate on detection and mitigation at a victim's side, paying inadequate attention to hacking costs and the collaboration of defenders. Thus, we propose the federated learning empowered mitigation architecture (FLEAM) to advocate joint defense, incurring a higher hacking expense. FLEAM combines FL and fog computing to reduce mitigation time and improve detection accuracy, enabling defenders to jointly combatting botnets. Our comprehensive evaluations showcase that the attacking expense incurred is 2.5 times higher, the mitigation delay is about 72% lower, and the accuracy is 47% greater on average than classic solutions.

Structure and electronic properties of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy

We have investigated the atomic and electronic structure of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy. Low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that the native herringbone reconstruction of bare Au(111) surface remains intact after formation of a long range ordered ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$2/Au(111) surface alloy. Angle-resolved photoemission and two-photon photoemission spectroscopy techniques reveal Rashba-type spin-split bands in the occupied valence band with comparable momentum space splitting as observed for the Au(111) surface state, but with a hole-like parabolic dispersion. Our experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculation that fully support our experimental findings. Taking advantage of the good agreement between our DFT calculations and the experimental results, we are able to extract that the occupied Sn-Au hybrid band is of (s, d)-orbital character while the unoccupied Sn-Au hybrid bands are of (p, d)-orbital character. Hence, we can conclude that the Rashba-type spin splitting of the hole-like Sn-Au hybrid surface state is caused by the significant mixing of Au d- to Sn s-states in conjunction with the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling of Au, i.e., of the substrate.
