Dynamics and Resonance Fluorescence from a Superconducting Artificial Atom Doubly Driven by Quantized and Classical Fields

We report an experimental demonstration of resonance fluorescence in a two-level superconducting artificial atom under two driving fields coupled to a detuned cavity. One of the fields is classical and the other is varied from quantum (vacuum fluctuations) to classical one by controlling the photon number inside the cavity. The device consists of a transmon qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional transmission line and a coplanar waveguide resonator. We observe a sideband anti-crossing and asymmetry in the emission spectra of the system through a one-dimensional transmission line, which is fundamentally different from the weak coupling case. By changing the photon number inside the cavity, the emission spectrum of our doubly driven system approaches to the case when the atom is driven by two classical bichromatic fields. We also measure the dynamical evolution of the system through the transmission line and study the properties of the first-order correlation function, Rabi oscillations and energy relaxation in the system. The study of resonance fluorescence from an atom driven by two fields promotes understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits and may find applications in superconducting quantum computing and quantum networks.

Parity-time-symmetric two-qubit system: entanglement and sensing

In this paper we study exceptional-point (EP) effects and quantum sensing in a parity-time (PT)-symmetric two-qubit system with the Ising-type interaction. We explore EP properties of the system by analyzing degeneracy of energy eigenvalues or entanglement of eigenstates. We investigate entanglement dynamics of the two qubits in detail. In particular, we demonstrate that the system can create the steady-state entanglement in the PT-broken phase and collapse-revival phenomenon of entanglement in the PT-symmetric phase during the long-time evolution. We show that entanglement can be generated more quickly than the corresponding Hermitian system. Finally, we prove that the sensitivity of eigenstate quantum sensing for the parameters exhibits the remarkable enharncement at EPs, and propose a quantum-coherence measurement to witness the existence of EPs.

Resonance Fluorescence from a two-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a single-mode cavity

We experimentally demonstrate the resonance fluorescence of a two-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a single-mode cavity field. The effect was theoretically predicted thirty years ago by Savage [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 1376 (1989)]. The system consists of a superconducting qubit circuit and a one-dimensional transmission line resonator. In addition, a one-dimensional transmission line strongly coupled to the atom serves as an open space. The effect takes place, when a microwave field is applied to the cavity, which in turn is resonantly coupled to the atom. The fluorescence spectrum is measured via the emission into the transmission line. We find that the central peak is determined by the atom spontaneous emission to the open space and the widths of side peaks are largely determined by the coherent interaction between the atom and the cavity, that is, the fluorescence spectrum here is very different from that of the Mollow triplet. We also derive analytical form for the spectrum. Our experimental results agree well with theoretical calculations.

Witnessing entanglement via the geometric phase in a impurity-doped Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a theoretical scheme to witness quantum entanglement via the geometric phase in an impurity-doped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is a micro-macro quantum system consisting of two Rydberg impurity qubits and the BEC. We calculate the geometric phase of the impurity qubits in the presence of the initial micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement, respectively. It is demonstrated that the geometric phase of the impurity qubits can witness not only inter-qubit micro-micro entanglement, but also qubit-BEC micro-macro entanglement. Our work provide a new insight to witness micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement in a impurity-doped BEC.

Vacuum-induced Autler-Townes splitting in a superconducting artificial atom

We experimentally study a vacuum-induced Autler-Townes doublet in a superconducting three-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator and simultaneously to a transmission line. The Autler-Townes splitting is observed in the reflection spectrum from the three-level atom in a transition between the ground state and the second excited state when the transition between the two excited states is resonant with a resonator. By applying a driving field to the resonator, we observe a change in the regime of the Autler-Townes splitting from quantum (vacuum-induced) to classical (with many resonator photons). Furthermore, we show that the reflection of propagating microwaves in a transmission line could be controlled by different frequency single photons in a resonator.

Dynamic effects of electromagnetic wave on a damped two-level atom

We studied the dynamic effects of an electromagnetic(EM) wave with circular polarization on a two-level damped atom. The results demonstrate interesting ac Stark split of energy levels of damped atom. The split levels have different energies and lifetimes, both of which depend on the interaction and the damping rate of atom. When the frequency of the EM wave is tuned to satisfy the resonance condition in the strong coupling limit, the transition probability exhibits Rabi oscillation. Momentum transfer between atom and EM wave shows similar properties as the transition probability under resonance condition. For a damped atom interacting with EM field, there exists no longer stable state. More importantly, if the angular frequency of the EM wave is tuned the same as the atomic transition frequency and its amplitude is adjusted appropriately according to the damping coefficients, we can prepare a particular 'Dressed State' of the coupled system between atom and EM field and can keep the system coherently in this 'Dressed state' for a very long time. This opens another way to prepare coherent atomic states.
