Shape evolution in Yttrium and Niobium neutron-rich isotopes

The isotopic evolution of the ground-state nuclear shapes and the systematics of one-quasiproton configurations are studied in neutron-rich odd-A Yttrium and Niobium isotopes. We use a selfconsistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism based on the Gogny energy density functional with two parametrizations, D1S and D1M. The equal filling approximation is used to describe odd-A nuclei preserving both axial and time reversal symmetries. Shape-transition signatures are identified in the N=60 isotopes in both charge radii and spin-parities of the ground states. These signatures are a common characteristic for nuclei in the whole mass region. The nuclear deformation and shape coexistence inherent to this mass region are shown to play a relevant role in the understanding of the spectroscopic features of the ground and low-lying one-quasiproton states. Finally, a global picture of the neutron-rich A=100 mass region from Krypton up to Molybdenum isotopes is illustrated with the systematics of the nuclear charge radii isotopic shifts.

Technical aspects of the evaluation of the overlap of Hartree- Fock- Bogoliubov wave functions

Several technical aspects concerning the evaluation of the overlap between two mean field wave functions of the Hartree Fock Bogoliubov type, are discussed. The limit when several orbitals become fully occupied is derived as well as the formula to reduce the dimensionality of the problem when exactly empty orbitals are present. The formalism is also extended to deal with the case where the bases of each of the wave functions are different. Several practical results concerning the evaluation of pfaffians as well as the canonical decomposition of norm overlaps are also discussed in the appendices.

Numeric and symbolic evaluation of the pfaffian of general skew-symmetric matrices

Evaluation of pfaffians arises in a number of physics applications, and for some of them a direct method is preferable to using the determinantal formula. We discuss two methods for the numerical evaluation of pfaffians. The first is tridiagonalization based on Householder transformations. The main advantage of this method is its numerical stability that makes unnecessary the implementation of a pivoting strategy. The second method considered is based on Aitken's block diagonalization formula. It yields to a kind of LU (similar to Cholesky's factorization) decomposition (under congruence) of arbitrary skew-symmetric matrices that is well suited both for the numeric and symbolic evaluations of the pfaffian. Fortran subroutines (FORTRAN 77 and 90) implementing both methods are given. We also provide simple implementations in Python and Mathematica for purpose of testing, or for exploratory studies of methods that make use of pfaffians.

Signatures of shape transition in odd-A neutron-rich Rubidium isotopes

The isotopic evolution of the ground-state nuclear shapes and the systematics of one-quasiproton configurations are studied in odd-A Rubidium isotopes. We use a selfconsistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism based on the Gogny energy density functional with two parametrizations, D1S and D1M, and implemented with the equal filling approximation. We find clear signatures of a sharp shape transition at N=60 in both charge radii and spin-parity of the ground states, which are robust, consistent to each other, and in agreement with experiment. We point out that the combined analysis of these two observables could be used to predict unambiguously new regions where shape transitions might develop.

Structural evolution in Pt isotopes with the Interacting Boson Model Hamiltonian derived from the Gogny Energy Density Functional

Spectroscopic calculations are carried out, for the description of the shape/phase transition in Pt nuclei in terms of the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) Hamiltonian derived from (constrained) Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations with the finite range and density dependent Gogny-D1S Energy Density Functional. Assuming that the many-nucleon driven dynamics of nuclear surface deformation can be simulated by effective bosonic degrees of freedom, the Gogny-D1S potential energy surface (PES) with quadrupole degrees of freedom is mapped onto the corresponding PES of the IBM. Using this mapping procedure, the parameters of the IBM Hamiltonian, relevant to the low-lying quadrupole collective states, are derived as functions of the number of valence nucleons. Merits of both Gogny-HFB and IBM approaches are utilized so that the spectra and the wave functions in the laboratory system are calculated precisely. The experimental low-lying spectra of both ground-state and side-band levels are well reproduced. From the systematics of the calculated spectra and the reduced E2 transition probabilities $B$(E2), the prolate-to-oblate shape/phase transition is shown to take place quite smoothly as a function of neutron number $N$ in the considered Pt isotopic chain, for which the $γ$-softness plays an essential role. All these spectroscopic observables behave consistently with the relevant PESs and the derived parameters of the IBM Hamiltonian as functions of $N$. Spectroscopic predictions are also made for those nuclei which do not have enough experimental E2 data.

Systematics of one-quasiparticle configurations in neutron-rich Sr, Zr, and Mo odd isotopes with the Gogny energy density functional

The systematics of one-quasiparticle configurations in neutron-rich Sr, Zr, and Mo odd isotopes is studied within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus Equal Filling Approximation method preserving both axial and time reversal symmetries. Calculations based on the Gogny energy density functional with both the standard D1S parametrization and the new D1M incarnation of this functional are included in our analysis. The nuclear deformation and shape coexistence inherent to this mass region are shown to play a relevant role in the understanding of the spectroscopic features of the ground and low-lying one-quasineutron states.

Charge radii and structural evolution in Sr, Zr, and Mo isotopes

The evolution of the ground-state nuclear shapes in neutron-rich Sr, Zr, and Mo isotopes, including both even-even and odd-A nuclei, is studied within a self-consistent mean-field approximation based on the D1S Gogny interaction. Neutron separation energies and charge radii are calculated and compared with available data. A correlation between a shape transition and a discontinuity in those observables is found microscopically. While in Sr and Zr isotopes the steep behavior observed in the isotopic dependence of the charge radii is a consequence of a sharp prolate-oblate transition, the smooth behavior found in Mo isotopes has its origin in an emergent region of triaxiality.

Separable approximation to two-body matrix elements

Two-body matrix elements of arbitrary local interactions are written as the sum of separable terms in a way that is well suited for the exchange and pairing channels present in mean-field calculations. The expansion relies on the transformation to center of mass and relative coordinate (in the spirit of Talmi's method) and therefore it is only useful (finite number of expansion terms) for harmonic oscillator single particle states. The converge of the expansion with the number of terms retained is studied for a Gaussian two body interaction. The limit of a contact (delta) force is also considered. Ways to handle the general case are also discussed.

Octupole deformation properties of the Barcelona-Catania-Paris energy density functionals

We discuss the octupole deformation properties of the recently proposed Barcelona-Catania-Paris (BCP) energy density functionals for two sets of isotopes, those of radium and barium, where it is believed that octupole deformation plays a role in the description of the ground state. The analysis is carried out in the mean field framework (Hartree- Fock- Bogoliubov approximation) by using the axially symmetric octupole moment as a constraint. The main ingredients entering the octupole collective Hamiltonian are evaluated and the lowest lying octupole eigenstates are obtained. In this way we restore, in an approximate way, the parity symmetry spontaneously broken by the mean field and also incorporate octupole fluctuations around the ground state solution. For each isotope the energy of the lowest lying $1^{-}$state and the $B(E1)$ and $B(E3)$ transition probabilities have been computed and compared to both the experimental data and the results obtained in the same framework with the Gogny D1S interaction, which are used here as a well established benchmark. Finally, the octupolarity of the configurations involved in the way down to fission of $^{240}$Pu, which is strongly connected to the asymmetric fragment mass distribution, is studied. We confirm with this thorough study the suitability of the BCP functionals to describe octupole related phenomena.

Mean field study of structural changes in Pt isotopes with the Gogny interaction

The evolution of the nuclear shapes along the triaxial landscape is studied in the Pt isotopic chain using the selfconsistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation based on the Gogny interaction. In addition to the parametrization D1S, the new incarnations D1N and D1M of this force are also included in our analysis to asses to which extent the predictions are independent of details of the effective interaction. The considered range of neutron numbers 88<N<26 includes prolate, triaxial, oblate and spherical ground state shapes and serves for a detailed comparison of the predictions obtained with the new sets D1N and D1M against the ones provided by the standard parametrization Gogny-D1S in a region of the nuclear landscape for which experimental and theoretical fingerprints of shape transitions have been found. Structural evolution along the Pt chain is discussed in terms of the deformation dependence of single particle energies.

Shape transitions in neutron-rich Yb, Hf, W, Os, and Pt isotopes within a Skyrme Hartree-Fock + BCS approach

Self-consistent axially symmetric Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculations are performed to study the evolution of shapes with the number of nucleons in various chains of Yb, Hf, W, Os, and Pt isotopes from neutron number N=110 up to N=122. Potential energy curves are analyzed in a search for signatures of oblate-prolate phase shape transitions and results from various Skyrme and pairing forces are considered. Comparisons with results obtained with the Gogny interaction as well as with relativistic mean field calculations are presented. The role of the $γ$ degree of freedom is also discussed.

Microscopic justification of the Equal Filling approximation

The Equal Filling Approximation, a procedure widely used in mean field calculations to treat the dynamics of odd nuclei in a time reversal invariant way, is justified as the consequence of a variational principle over an average energy functional. The ideas of Statistical Quantum Mechanics are employed in the justification. As an illustration of the method, the ground and lowest lying states of some octupole deformed Radium isotopes are computed.

Deformation properties of the BCP energy density functional

We explore the deformation properties of the newly postulated BCP energy density functional (EDF). The results obtained for three isotope chains of Mg, Dy and Ra are compared to the available experimental data as well as to the results of the Gogny-D1S force. Results for the fission barrier of $^{240}$Pu are also discussed.

Cluster radioactivity of Th isotopes in the mean-field HFB theory

Cluster radioactivity is described as a very mass asymmetric fission process. The reflection symmetry breaking octupole moment has been used in a mean field HFB theory as leading coordinate instead of the quadrupole moment usually used in standard fission calculations. The procedure has been applied to the study of the ``very mass asymmetric fission barrier'' of several even-even Thorium isotopes. The masses of the emitted clusters as well as the corresponding half-lives have been evaluated on those cases where experimental data exist.

Angular Momentum Projection and Quadrupole Correlations Effects in Atomic Nuclei

The degrees of freedom associated with shape fluctuations and space orientation of atomic nuclei are analyzed with effective forces and large configuration spaces. A pedagogical theoretical introduction to the topic of symmetries restoration broken in the mean field approach as well as to the concept of generator coordinate is presented. We discuss global properties, like binding energies, two neutron separation energies and quadrupole moments, as well as spectroscopic ones like excitation energies or transition probabilities. The analysis covers selected examples of light and heavy nuclei, as well as some examples from the stability line to the drip lines.

Unveiling the origin of shape coexistence in lead isotopes

The shape coexistence in the nuclei $^{182-192}$Pb is analyzed within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the effective Gogny force. A good agreement with the experimental energies is found for the coexisting spherical, oblate and prolate states. Contrary to the established interpretation, it is found that the low-lying prolate and oblate $0^+$ states observed in this mass region are predominantly characterized by neutron correlations whereas the protons behave as spectators rather than playing an active role.

Description of the superdeformed band of $^{36}$Ar with the Gogny force

The superdeformed band of $^{36}$Ar is studied with the Gogny force D1S and the angular momentum projected generator coordinate method for the quadrupole moment. The band head excitation energy, moments of inertia, $B(E2)$ transition probabilities and stability against quadrupole fluctuations at low spin are studied. The Self Consistent Cranking method is also used to describe the superdeformed rotational band. In addition, properties of some normal deformed states are discussed.
