A unified diagrammatic approach to quantum transport in few-level junctions for bosonic and fermionic reservoirs: Application to the quantum Rabi model

We apply the Nakajima-Zwanzig approach to open quantum systems to study steady-state transport across generic multi-level junctions coupled to bosonic or fermionic reservoirs. The method allows for a unified diagrammatic formulation in Liouville space, with diagrams being classified according to an expansion in the coupling strength between the reservoirs and the junction. Analytical, approximate expressions are provided up to fourth order for the steady-state boson transport that generalize to multi-level systems the known results for the low-temperature thermal conductance in the spin-boson model. The formalism is applied to the problem of heat transport in a qubit-resonator junction modeled by the quantum Rabi model. Nontrivial transport features emerge as a result of the interplay between the qubit-oscillator detuning and coupling strength. For quasi-degenerate spectra, nonvanishing steady-state coherences cause a suppression of the thermal conductance.

Heat transport in the quantum Rabi model: Universality and ultrastrong coupling effects

Heat transport in the quantum Rabi model at weak interaction with the heat baths is controlled by the qubit-oscillator coupling. Universality of the linear conductance versus the temperature is found for $T\lesssim T_K$, with $T_K$ a coupling-dependent Kondo-like temperature. At low temperature, coherent heat transfer via virtual processes yields a $\sim T^3$ behavior with destructive interference in the presence of quasi-degeneracies in the spectrum. As the temperature increases, incoherent emission and absorption dominate and a maximum is reached at $T\sim T_K/2$. In the presence of a bias on the qubit, the conductance makes a transition from a resonant to a broad, zero-bias peak regime. Parallels and differences are found compared to the spin-boson model in [K. Saito and T. Kato, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 214301 (2013)], where the qubit-bath coupling instead of the internal qubit-oscillator coupling rules thermal transport.

Feynman-Vernon influence functional approach to quantum transport in interacting nanojunctions: An analytical hierarchical study

We present a nonperturbative and formally exact approach for the charge transport in interacting nanojunctions based on a real time path integral formulation of the reduced system dynamics. An expansion of the influence functional in terms of the number of tunneling transitions, and integration of the Grassmann variables between the tunneling times, allows us to obtain a still exact generalized master equation (GME) for the populations of the reduced density matrix (RDM) in the occupation number representation, as well as a formally exact expression for the current. By borrowing the nomenclature of the famous spin-boson problem, we characterize the two-state dynamics of such degrees of freedom on the forward and backward branches in terms of single four-state paths with alternating blips and sojourns. This allows a diagrammatic representation of the GME kernel and its parametrization in terms of sequences of blips and sojourns. We apply our formalism to the exactly solvable resonant level model (RLM) and to the the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM). We demonstrate a hierarchical diagrammatic structure of the exact GME kernel. While the hierarchy closes at the second-tier level for the RLM, this is not the case for the interacting SIAM. Upon inspection of the GME, known results from various perturbative and nonperturbative approximation schemes to quantum transport in the SIAM are recovered. Finally, a noncrossing approximation for the hierarchical kernel is developed, which enables us to systematically decrease temperature at each next level of the approximation. Analytical results are presented, both in equilibrium and nonequilibrium, including the case of an applied magnetic field.

Transmission spectra of the driven, dissipative Rabi model in the USC regime

We present theoretical transmission spectra of a strongly driven, damped, flux qubit coupled to a dissipative resonator in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Such a qubit-oscillator system, described within a dissipative Rabi model, constitutes the building block of superconducting circuit QED platforms. The addition of a strong drive allows one to characterize the system properties and study novel phenomena, leading to a better understanding and control of the qubit-oscillator system. In this work, the calculated transmission of a weak probe field quantifies the response of the qubit, in frequency domain, under the influence of the quantized resonator and of the strong microwave drive. We find distinctive features of the entangled driven qubit-resonator spectrum, namely resonant features and avoided crossings, modified by the presence of the dissipative environment. The magnitude, positions, and broadening of these features are determined by the interplay among qubit-oscillator detuning, the strength of their coupling, the driving amplitude, and the interaction with the heat bath. This work establishes the theoretical basis for future experiments in the driven ultrastrong coupling regime and their impact to develop novel quantum technologies with superconducting circuits.

Asymptotic Floquet states of a periodically driven spin-boson system in the nonperturbative coupling regime

As a paradigmatic model of open quantum system, the spin-boson model is widely used in theoretical and experimental investigations. Beyond the weak coupling limit, the spin dynamics can be described by a time-nonlocal generalized master equation with a memory kernel accounting for the dissipative effects induced by the bosonic environment. When the spin is additionally modulated by an external time-periodic electromagnetic field, the interplay between dissipation and modulations yields a spectrum of nontrivial asymptotic states, especially in the regime of nonlinear response. Here we implement a method for the evaluation of Floquet dynamics in non-Markovian systems [L. Magazzù et al., Phys. Rev. A 96, 042103 (2017)] to find these strongly non-equilibrium states.

Generation and stabilization of Bell states via repeated projective measurements on a driven ancilla qubit

A protocol is proposed to generate Bell states in two non-directly interacting qubits by means of repeated measurements of the state of a central ancilla connected to both qubits. An optimal measurement rate is found that minimizes the time to stably encode a Bell state in the target qubits, being of advantage in order to reduce detrimental effects from possible interactions with the environment. The quality of the entanglement is assessed in terms of the concurrence and the distance between the qubits state and the target Bell state is quantified by the fidelity.

Quantum Brownian motion under generalized position measurements: A converse Zeno scenario

We study the quantum Brownian motion of a harmonic oscillator undergoing a sequence of generalized position measurements. Our exact analytical results capture the interplay of the measurement backaction and dissipation. Here we demonstrate that no freeze-in Zeno effect occurs upon increasing the monitoring frequency. A similar behavior is also found in the presence of generalized momentum measurements.

Probing the strongly driven spin-boson model in a superconducting quantum circuit

Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the "spin", interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environment and subjected to a coherent drive. This setup realizes the driven Ohmic spin-boson model. We show that the drive reinforces environmental suppression of quantum coherence, and that a coherent-to-incoherent transition can be achieved by tuning the drive amplitude. An out-of-equilibrium detailed balance relation is demonstrated. These results advance fundamental understanding of open quantum systems and bear potential for the design of entangled light-matter states.

Stabilization of quantum metastable states by dissipation

Normally, quantum fluctuations enhance the escape from metastable states in the presence of dissipation. Here we show that dissipation can enhance the stability of a quantum metastable system, consisting of a particle moving in a strongly asymmetric double well potential, interacting with a thermal bath. We find that the escape time from the metastable state has a nonmonotonic behavior versus the system-bath coupling and the temperature, producing a stabilizing effect.
