NUMEXO2: a versatile digitizer for nuclear physics

NUMEXO2 is a 16 channels 14bit/200MHz digitizer and processing board initially developed for gamma-ray spectroscopy (for EXOGAM: EXOtic nuclei GAMma ray). Numexo2 has been gradually extended and improved as a general purpose digitizer to fulfill various needs in nuclear physics detection at GANIL. This was possible thanks to reprogrammable components like FPGAs and the optimization of different algorithms. The originality of this work compared to similar systems is that all numerical operations follow the digital data flow from ADCs, without any storage step of samples. Some details are given on digital processing of the signals, delivered by a large variety of detectors: HPGe, silicon strip detector, ionisation chamber, liquid and plastic scintillators read-out with photomultipliers, Multi Wire Proportional Counter and drift chamber.

Study of silicon photomultipliers for the readout of a lead/scintillating-fiber calorimeter

The KLOE electromagnetic calorimeter is expected to be reused in the Near Detector complex of the DUNE experiment at Fermilab. The possible substitution of traditional Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) in the refurbished calorimeter is the object of this investigation. A block of the KLOE lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter has been equipped with light guides and external trigger scintillators. The signals induced by cosmic rays and environmental radioactivity have been collected by SiPM arrays on one side of the calorimeter, and by conventional PMTs on the opposite side. Efficiency, stability, and timing resolution of SiPMs have been studied and compared with KLOE-PMTs performance. Conclusions about the convenience of substituting PMTs with SiPMs are drawn.

Skyrmion Tubes in achiral nematic liquid crystals

We analyze the interaction with uniform external fields of nematic liquid crystals within a recent generalized free-energy posited by Virga and falling in the class of quartic functionals in the spatial gradients of the nematic director. We review some known interesting solutions, i. e., uniform heliconical structures, which correspond to the so-called twist-bend nematic phase and we also study the transition between this phase and the standard uniform nematic one. Moreover, we find liquid crystal configurations, which closely resemble some novel, experimentally detected, structures called Skyrmion Tubes. Skyrmion Tubes are characterized by a localized cylindrically-symmetric pattern surrounded by either twist-bend or uniform nematic phase. We study the equilibrium differential equations and find numerical solutions and analytical approximations.

Coded masks for imaging of neutrino events

The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to grab sufficiently high luminosity in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. This preliminary study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors. In this respect, the proposed system is able to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully decode and recognize signals, even complex, with a relatively limited number of acquisition channels. Such innovative technique can be very fruitful in a new generation of detectors devoted to neutrino physics and dark matter search. Indeed the introduction of coded masks combined with SiPM detectors is proposed for a liquid-Argon target in the Near Detector of the DUNE experiment.

Non-uniform localised distortions in generalised elasticity for liquid crystals

We analyse a recent generalised free-energy for liquid crystals posited by Virga and falling in the class of quartic functionals in the spatial gradients of the nematic director. We review some known interesting solutions, i. e., uniform heliconical structures, and we find new liquid crystal configurations, which closely resemble some novel, experimentally detected, structures called Skyrmion tubes. These new configurations are characterised by a localised pattern given by the variation of the conical angle. We study the equilibrium differential equations and find numerical solutions and analytical approximations.

Helicoids in chiral liquid crystals under external fields

Cholesteric Liquid Crystals (CLCs), subject to externally applied magnetic fields and confined between two parallel planar surfaces with strong homeotropic anchoring conditions, are found to undergo transitions to different types of helicoidal configurations with disclinations. Analytical and numerical studies are performed in order to characterise their properties. In particular, we produce a phase diagram for the transitions from the nematic state to the helicoidal phases in terms of the molecular chirality and the strength of the applied magnetic field.

Light Scattering by Cholesteric Skyrmions

We study the light scattering by localized quasi planar excitations of a Cholesteric Liquid Crystal known as spherulites. Due to the anisotropic optical properties of the medium and the peculiar shape of the excitations, we quantitatively evaluate the cross section of the axis-rotation of polarized light. Because of the complexity of the system under consideration, first we give a simplified, but analytical, description of the spherulite and we compare the Born approximation results in this setting with those obtained by resorting to a numerical exact solution. The effects of changing values of the driving external static electric (or magnetic) field is considered. Possible applications of the phenomenon are envisaged.

Waves in the Skyrme--Faddeev model and integrable reductions

In the present article we show that the Skyrme--Faddeev model possesses nonlinear wave solutions, which can be expressed in terms of elliptic functions. The Whitham averaging method has been exploited in order to describe slow deformation of periodic wave states, leading to a quasi-linear system. The reduction to general hydrodynamic systems have been considered and it is compared with other integrable reductions of the system.

Exotic galilean symmetry and non-commutative mechanics

Some aspects of the "exotic" particle, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group are reviewed. A fundamental property is that it has non-commuting position coordinates. Other and generalized non-commutative models are also discussed. Minimal as well as anomalous coupling to an external electromagnetic field is presented. Supersymmetric extension is also considered. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also found in Moyal field theory. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.

Correlation Energy and Entanglement Gap in Continuous Models

Our goal is to clarify the relation between entanglement and correlation energy in a bipartite system with infinite dimensional Hilbert space. To this aim we consider the completely solvable Moshinsky's model of two linearly coupled harmonic oscillators. Also for small values of the couplings the entanglement of the ground state is nonlinearly related to the correlation energy, involving logarithmic or algebraic corrections. Then, looking for witness observables of the entanglement, we show how to give a physical interpretation of the correlation energy. In particular, we have proven that there exists a set of separable states, continuously connected with the Hartree-Fock state, which may have a larger overlap with the exact ground state, but also a larger energy expectation value. In this sense, the correlation energy provides an entanglement gap, i.e. an energy scale, under which measurements performed on the 1-particle harmonic sub-system can discriminate the ground state from any other separated state of the system. However, in order to verify the generality of the procedure, we have compared the energy distribution cumulants for the 1-particle harmonic sub-system of the Moshinsky's model with the case of a coupling with a damping Ohmic bath at 0 temperature.

A chain of strongly correlated SU(2)_4 anyons: Hamiltonian and Hilbert space of states

One-dimensional lattice model of SU(2)_{4} anyons containing a transition into the topological ordered phase state is considered. An effective low-energy Hamiltonian is found for half-integer and integer indices of the type of strongly correlated non-Abelian anyons. The Hilbert state space properties in the considered modular tensor category are studied.

Dynamics of semiclassical Bloch wave - packets

The semiclassical approximation for electron wave-packets in crystals leads to equations which can be derived from a Lagrangian or, under suitable regularity conditions, in a Hamiltonian framework. In the plane, these issues are studied %in presence of external fields using the method of the coadjoint orbit applied to the ``enlarged'' Galilei group.

Berry phase correction to electron density in solids and "exotic" dynamics

Recent results on the semiclassical dynamics of an electron in a solid are explained using techniques developed for ``exotic'' Galilean dynamics. The system is indeed Hamiltonian and Liouville's theorem holds for the symplectic volume form. Suitably defined quantities satisfy hydrodynamic equations.

Enlarged Galilean symmetry of anyons and the Hall effect

Enlarged planar Galilean symmetry, built of both space-time and field variables and also incorporating the ``exotic'' central extension is introduced. It is used to describe non-relativistic anyons coupled to an electromagnetic field. Our theory exhibits an anomalous velocity relation of the type used to explain the Anomalous Hall Effect. The Hall motions, characterized by a Casimir of the enlarged algebra, become mandatory for some critical value(s) of the magnetic field. The extension of our scheme yields the semiclassical effective model of the Bloch electron.

Comments on spin-orbit interaction of anyons

The coupling of non-relativistic anyons (called exotic particles) to an electromagnetic field is considered. Anomalous coupling is introduced by adding a spin-orbit term to the Lagrangian. Alternatively, one has two Hamiltonian structures, obtained by either adding the anomalous term to the Hamiltonian, or by redefining the mass and the NC parameter. The model can also be derived from its relativistic counterpart.

Symmetries of field theories on the non-commutative plane

New developments on the symmetries of non-relativistic field theoretical models on the non commutative plane are reviewed. It is shown in particular that Galilean invariance strongly restricts the admissible interactions. Moreover, if a scalar field is coupled to a Chern - Simons gauge field, a geometrical phase emerges for vortex - like solutions, transformed by Galilei boosts.
