Spin excitations in the antiferromagnet NaNiO2

In NaNiO2, Ni3+ ions form a quasi two dimensional triangular lattice of S = 1=2 spins. The magnetic order observed below 20K has been described as an A type antiferromagnet with ferro- magnetic layers weakly coupled antiferromagnetically. We studied the magnetic excitations with the electron spin resonance for frequencies 1-20 cm-1, in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The bulk of the results are interpreted in terms of a phenomenological model involving bi-axial anisotropy for the spins: a strong easy-plane term, and a weaker anisotropy within the plane. The direction of the easy plane is constrained by the collective Jahn-Teller distortion occurring in this material at 480 K.

Separation of orbital contributions to the optical conductivity of BaVS$_3$

The correlation-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT) of BaVS$_3$ was studied by polarized infrared spectroscopy. In the metallic state two types of electrons coexist at the Fermi energy: The quasi 1D metallic transport of $A_{1g}$ electrons is superimposed on the isotropic hopping conduction of localized $E_g$ electrons. The "bad-metal" character and the weak anisotropy are the consequences of the large effective mass $m_{eff}\approx7m_e$ and scattering rate $Γ\geq160$ meV of the quasi-particles in the $A_{1g}$ band. There is a pseudo-gap above $T_{MI}=69$ K, and in the insulating phase the gap follows the BCS-like temperature dependence of the structural order parameter with $Δ_{ch}\approx42$ meV in the ground state. The MIT is described in terms of a weakly coupled two-band model.

Search for Magnetic Field Induced Gap in a High-Tc Superconductor

Break junctions made of the optimally doped high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2CuO8 with Tc of 90 K has been investigated in magnetic fields up to 12 T, at temperatures from 4.2 K to Tc. The junction resistance varied between 1kOhm and 300kOhm. The differential conductance at low biases did not exhibit a significant magnetic field dependence, indicating that a magnetic-field-induced gap (Krishana et al., Science 277 83 (1997)), if exists, must be smaller than 0.25 meV.

Vibrational Study of 13C-enriched C60 Crystals

The infrared (IR) spectrum of solid C60 exhibits many weak vibrational modes. Symmetry breaking due to 13C isotopes provides a possible route for optically activating IR-silent vibrational modes. Experimental spectra and a semi-empirical theory on natural abundance and 13C-enriched single crystals of C60 are presented. By comparing the experimental results with the theoretical results, we exclude this isotopic activation mechanism from the explanation for weakly active fundamentals in the spectra.

Infrared and Raman Evidence for Dimers and Polymers in Rb1C60

The infrared- and Raman-active vibrational modes of C60 were measured in the various structural states of Rb1C60. According to earlier studies, Rb1C60 has an $fcc$ structure at temperatures above ~100C, a linear chain polymer orthorhombic structure when slowly cooled, and an as yet undetermined structure when very rapidly cooled ("quenched"). We show that the spectra obtained in the polymer state are consistent with each C60 molecule having bonds to two diametrically opposite neighbors. In the quenched state, we find evidence for further symmetry breaking, implying a lower symmetry structure than the polymer state. The spectroscopic data of the quenched phase are shown to be consistent with Rb2(C60)2, a dimerization of C60.

Observation and Assignment of Silent and Higher Order Vibrations in the Infrared Transmission of C60 Crystals

We report the measurement of infrared transmission of large C60 single crystals. The spectra exhibit a very rich structure with over 180 vibrational absorptions visible in the 100 - 4000 cm-1 range. Many silent modes are observed to have become weakly IR-active. We also observe a large number of higher order combination modes. The temperature (77K - 300K) and pressure (0 - 25KBar) dependencies of these modes were measured and are presented. Careful analysis of the IR spectra in conjunction with Raman scattering data showing second order modes and neutron scattering data, allow the selection of the 46 vibrational modes C60. We are able to fit *all* of the first and second order data seen in the present IR spectra and the previously published Raman data (~300 lines total), using these 46 modes and their group theory allowed second order combinations.

No Far-Infrared-Spectroscopic Gap in Clean and Dirty High-T$_C$ Superconductors

We report far infrared transmission measurements on single crystal samples derived from Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$. The impurity scattering rate of the samples was varied by electron-beam irradiation, 50MeV $^{16}$O$^{+6}$ ion irradiation, heat treatment in vacuum, and Y doping. Although substantial changes in the infrared spectra were produced, in no case was a feature observed that could be associated with the superconducting energy gap. These results all but rule out ``clean limit'' explanations for the absence of the spectroscopic gap in this material, and provide evidence that the superconductivity in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is gapless.

In-Situ Infrared Transmission Study of Rb- and K-Doped Fullerenes

We have measured the four IR active $C_{60}$ molecular vibrations in $M_{x}C_{60}$ $(M = K, Rb)$ as a function of doping $x$. We observe discontinuous changes in the vibrational spectra showing four distinct phases (presumably $x = 0, 3, 4$, and 6). The $1427cm^{-1}$ and $576cm^{-1}$ modes show the largest changes shifting downward in frequency in four steps as the doping increases. Several new very weak modes are visible in the $x=6$ phase and are possibly Raman modes becoming weakly optically active. We present quantitative fits of the data and calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the $1427cm^{-1}$ IR mode.
