Nonlinear Stability of Static N\'eel Walls in Ferromagnetic Thin Films

In this paper, the nonlinear (orbital) stability of static 180^\circ N\'eel walls in ferromagnetic films, under the reduced wave-type dynamics for the in-plane magnetization proposed by Capella, Melcher and Otto [CMO07], is established. It is proved that the spectrum of the linearized operator around the static N\'eel wall lies in the stable complex half plane with non-positive real part. This information is used to show that small perturbations of the static N\'eel wall converge to a translated orbit belonging to the manifold generated by the static wall.

Lifetime measurements of excited states in $^{15}$O

The CNO cycle is the main energy source in stars more massive than our sun, it defines the energy production and the cycle time that lead to the lifetime of massive stars, and it is an important tool for the determination of the age of globular clusters. One of the largest uncertainties in the CNO chain of reactions comes from the uncertainty in the $^{14}$N$(p,γ)^{15}$O reaction rate. This uncertainty arises predominantly from the uncertainty in the lifetime of the sub-threshold state in $^{15}$O at $E_{x}$ = 6792 keV. Previous measurements of this state's lifetime are significantly discrepant. Here, we report on a new lifetime measurement of this state, as well as the excited states in $^{15}$O at $E_{x}$ = 5181 keV and $E_{x}$ = 6172 keV, via the $^{14}$N$(p,γ)^{15}$O reaction at proton energies of $E_{p} = 1020$ keV and $E_{p} = 1570$ keV. The lifetimes have been determined with the Doppler-Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) with three separate, nitrogen-implanted targets with Mo, Ta, and W backing. We obtained lifetimes from the weighted average of the three measurements, allowing us to account for systematic differences between the backing materials. For the 6792 keV state, we obtained a $τ= 0.6 \pm 0.4$ fs. To provide cross-validation of our method, we measured the known lifetimes of the states at 5181 keV and 6172 keV to be $τ= 7.5 \pm 3.0$ and $τ= 0.7 \pm 0.5$ fs, respectively, which are in good agreement with previous measurements.

The magnetic structure of the subsolar MPB current layer from MAVEN observations: Implications for the Hall electric force

We report on the local structure of the Martian subsolar Magnetic Pileup Boundary (MPB) from minimum variance analysis of the magnetic field measured by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft for six orbits. In particular, we detect a well defined current layer within the MPB and provide a local estimate of its current density which results in a sunward Hall electric force. This force accounts for the deflection of the solar wind ions and the acceleration of electrons which carry the interplanetary magnetic field through the MPB into the Magnetic Pileup Region. We find that the thickness of the MPB current layer is of the order of both the upstream (magnetosheath) solar wind proton inertial length and convective gyroradius. This study provides a high resolution view of one of the components of the current system around Mars reported in recent works.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies of delta-Stabilized Plutonium

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies of Ga stabilized delta-Pu reveal detailed information about the local distortions surrounding the Ga impurities as well as provides information about the local spin fluctuations experienced by the Ga nuclei. The Ga NMR spectrum is inhomogeneously broadened by a distribution of local electric field gradients (EFGs), which indicates that the Ga experiences local distortions from cubic symmetry. The Knight shift and spin lattice relaxation rate indicate that the Ga is dominantly coupled to the Fermi surface via core polarization, and is inconsistent with magnetic order or low frequency spin correlations.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of USb2: the 5f band structure

Single crystal antiferromagnetic USb2 was studied at 15K by angle-resolved photoemission with an overall energy resolution of 24 meV. The measurements unambiguously show the dispersion of extremely narrow bands situated near the Fermi level. The peak at the Fermi level represents the narrowest feature observed in 5f-electron photoemission to date. The natural linewidth of the feature just below the Fermi level is not greater than 10 meV. Normal emission data indicate a three dimensional aspect to the electronic structure of this layered material.
