$\mathcal{P}$, $\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday rotation in intracavity absorption spectroscopy with molecular beam as a possible way to improve the sensitivity of the search for the time reflection noninvariant effects in nature

The present constraint on the space parity ($\mathcal{P}$) and time reflection invariance ($\mathcal{T}$) violating electron electric dipole moment ($e$EDM) is based on the observation of the electron spin precession in an external electric field using the ThO molecule. We propose an alternative approach: observation of the $\mathcal{P}$,~$\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday effect in an external electric field using the cavity-enhanced polarimetric scheme in combination with a molecular beam crossing the cavity. Our theoretical simulation of the proposed experiment with the PbF and ThO molecular beams shows that the present constraint on the $e$EDM in principle can be improved by a few orders of magnitude.

$\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday rotation on atoms and molecules in intra-cavity absorption spectroscopy as an alternative way to search for the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd effects in nature

Present limit on the electron electric dipole moment ($e$EDM) is based on the electron spin precession measurement. We propose an alternative approach - observation of the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday effect in an external electric field on atoms and molecules using cavity-enhanced polarimetric scheme in combination with molecular (atomic) beam crossing the cavity. Our calculations of the effective electric fields and theoretical simulation of the proposed experiment on Tl and Pb atoms, PbF, YbF, ThO, and YbOH show that the present limit on the $e$EDM can be improved by 6-7 orders of magnitude.

Accurate Evaluation of $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday Effect in Atoms of Xe and Hg

Accurate evaluation of the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd Faraday effect (rotation of the polarization plane for the light propagating through a medium in presence of an external electric field) is presented. This effect can arise only due to the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd interactions and is different from the ordinary Faraday effect, i.e. the light polarization plane rotation in an external magnetic field. The rotation angle is evaluated for the ICAS (intracavity absorption spectroscopy) type experiments with Xe and Hg atoms. The results show that Hg atom may become a good candidate for a search for the $\mathcal{P}$,$\mathcal{T}$-odd effects in atomic physics.

P,T-odd Faraday effect as a tool for observation of CP violation in Standard Model

It is proposed to employ the P,T-odd Faraday effect, i.e. rotation of the polarization plane of the light propagating through a medium in presence of the electric field, as a tool for observation of P,T-odd effects caused by CP violation within the Standard Model. For this purpose the vapors of heavy atoms like Tl, Pb, Bi are most suitable. Estimates within the Standard Model show: provided that applied field is about 10^5 V/cm and the optical length can be as large as 70000 km, the rotation angle may reach the value corresponding to the recently observable values (10^{-9} rad). These estimates demonstrate that the P,T-odd Faraday effect observations may effectively compete with the recent measurements of the electron spin rotation in an external electric field, performed with diatomic molecules. These measurements exclude the P,T-odd effects at the level 9 orders of magnitude higher than the predictions of the Standard Model.

The electric dipole moment of an electron in H-like ions in an electrostatic storage ring

Theoretical studies are presented how the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron in H-like ions in electrostatic storage rings can sensitively be determined. With the proposed experiments a new constraint of about $10^{-29}$ e cm for the electron EDM can be established what is by an order of magnitude more restrictive than the existing bounds. Experiments with H-like ions may provide a possibility to distinguish between the electron EDM effect and the effect of P,T violating interaction between the atomic electron and the nucleus.

Radiative double electron capture by bare nucleus with emission of one photon

Calculation of the cross-section for the process of double electron capture by bare nucleus with emission of a single photon is presented. The double electron capture is evaluated within the framework of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Line-Profile Approach (LPA) is employed. Since the radiative double electron capture is governed by the electron correlation, corrections to the interelectron interaction were calculated with high accuracy, partly to all orders of the perturbation theory.

QED calculation of transition probabilities in two-electron ions

Accurate QED calculation of transition probabilities for the low-lying two-electron configurations of multicharged ions is presented. The calculation is performed for the nondegenerate states $(1s2s) 3S1$, $(1s2p_{3/2}) 3P2$ ($M 1$ and $M 2$ transitions, respectively) and for the quasidegenerate states $(1s2p) 1P1$, $(1s2p) 3P1$ ($E 1$ transitions) decaying to the ground state $(1s1s) 1S0$. Two-electron ions with nuclear charge numbers $Z=10-92$ are considered. The line profile approach is employed for the description of the process in multicharged ions within the framework of QED.

Testing the time dependence of the fundamental constants in the spectra of multicharged ions

A new method for measuring a possible time dependence of the fine-structure constant ($α$) is proposed. The method is based on the level-crossing in two-electron highly-charged ions facilitating resonance laser measurements of the distance between the levels at the point of crossing. This provides an enhancement factor of about $10^{3}$ in Helium-like Europium and thus reduces the requirements for the relative accuracy of resonance laser measurements at about $10^{-12}$.

QED Calculation of E1M1 and E1E2 Transition Probabilities in One-Electron Ions with Arbitrary Nuclear Charge

The quantum electrodynamical theory of the two-photon transitions in hydrogenlike ions is presented. The emission probability for 2s1/2 -> 2E1+1s1/2 transitions is calculated and compared to the results of the previous calculations. The emission probabilities 2p12 -> E1E2+1s1/2 and 2p1/2 -> E1M1+1s1/2 are also calculated for the nuclear charge Z values 1-100. This is the first calculation of the two latter probabilities. The results are given in two different gauges.

Calculation of quasi-degenerate energy levels of two-electron ions

Accurate QED calculations of the interelectron interaction corrections for the $(1s2p)2 {}^1 P_1$, $(1s2p)2 {}^3 P_1$ two-electron configurations for ions with nuclear charge numbers $10\le Z \le 92$ are performed within the line profile approach. Total energies of these configurations are evaluated. Employing the fully relativistic treatment based on the {$j$--$j$} coupling scheme these energy levels become quasi-degenerate in the region $Z\le 40$. To treat such states within the framework of QED we utilize the line profile approach. The calculations are performed within the Coulomb gauge.

QED theory of transition probabilities and line profiles in highly-charged ions

A rigorous QED theory of the spectral line profiles is applied to transition probabilities in few-electron highly charged ions. Interelectron interaction corrections are included as well as radiative corrections. Parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitudes with effective weak interactions between the electrons and nucleus are also considered. QED and interelectron interaction corrections to the PNC amplitudes are derived.

Nonresonant corrections to the 1s-2s two-photon resonance for the hydrogen atom

The nonresonant (NR) corrections are estimated for the most accurately measured two-photon transition 1s-2s in the hydrogen atom. These corrections depend on the measurement process and set a limit for the accuracy of atomic frequency measurements. With the measurement process adopted in the modern experiments the NR contribution for 1s-2s transition energy can reach 10^{-3} Hz while the experimental inaccuracy is quoted to be +/- 46 Hz.

Asymmetry of the natural line profile for the hydrogen atom

The asymmetry of the natural line profile for transitions in hydrogen-like atoms is evaluated within a QED framework. For the Lyman-alpha $1s-2p$ absorption transition in neutral hydrogen this asymmetry results in an additional energy shift of 2.929856 Hz. For the $2s_{1/2}-2p_{3/2}$ transition it amounts to -1.512674 Hz. As a new feature this correction turns out to be process dependent. The quoted numbers refer to the Compton-scattering process.

The hyperfine structure of highly charged $^{238}_{92}$U ions with rotationally excited nuclei

The hyperfine structure (hfs) of electron levels of $^{238}_{92}$U ions with the nucleus excited in the low-lying rotational $2^+$ state with an energy $E_{2^+} = 44.91$ keV is investigated. In hydrogenlike uranium, the hfs splitting for the $1s_{1/2}$-ground state of the electron constitutes 1.8 eV. The hyperfine-quenched (hfq) lifetime of the $1s2p ^3P_0$ state has been calculated for heliumlike $^{238}_{92}$U and was found to be two orders of magnitude smaller than for the ion with the nucleus in the ground state. The possibility of a precise determination of the nuclear $g_r$ factor for the rotational $2^+$ state by measurements of the hfq lifetime is discussed.
