Composite Fermions Waltz to the Tune of a Wigner Crystal

When the kinetic energy of a collection of interacting two-dimensional (2D) electrons is quenched at very high magnetic fields so that the Coulomb repulsion dominates, the electrons are expected to condense into an ordered array, forming a quantum Wigner crystal (WC). Although this exotic state has long been suspected in high-mobility 2D electron systems at very low Landau level fillings ($ν<<1$), its direct observation has been elusive. Here we present a new technique and experimental results that directly probe the magnetic-field-induced WC. We measure the magneto-resistance of a bilayer electron system with unequal layer densities at high magnetic fields. One layer has a very low density and is in the WC regime ($ν<<1$), while the other ("probe") layer is near $ν=1/2$ and hosts a sea of composite fermions, quasi-particles formed by attaching two flux-quanta to each interacting electron. The composite fermions feel the periodic electric potential of the WC in the other layer and exhibit magneto-resistance maxima whenever their cyclotron orbit encircles certain integer number of the WC lattice points. The positions of the maxima reveal that the WC has a triangular lattice and yield a direct measure of its lattice constant. Our results provide a striking example of how one can probe an exotic many-body state of 2D electrons using equally exotic quasi-particles of another many-body state.

Observation of anti-levitation of Landau levels in vanishing magnetic fields

We report an anti-levitation behavior of Landau levels in vanishing magnetic fields in a high quality hetero-junction insulated-gated field-effect transistor. We found, in the Landau fan diagram of electron density versus magnetic field, the positions of the magneto-resistance minima at Landau level fillings ν=4, 5, 6 move below the 'traditional' Landau level line to lower electron densities. Moreover, the even and odd filling factors show quantitatively different behaviors in anti-levitation, suggesting that the exchange interactions may be important.

Microwave spectroscopic observation of a Wigner solid within the 1/2 fractional quantum Hall effect

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states at half integer Landau fillings ($ν$) have long been of great interest, since they have correlations that differ from those of the fundamental Laughlin states found at odd denominators. At $ν=1/2$ the FQHE has been observed in wide or double quantum wells, and is ascribed to the two-component Halperin-Laughlin $Ψ_{331}$ state. $Ψ_{331}$ excitations carry charge $\pm e/4$, like the carriers of $ν=5/2$ states which are of interest in quantum computation. Further, such an excitation (quasiparticle or -hole) of $Ψ_{331}$ has unequal, opposite charge in the top and bottom layers, and hence an up or down dipole moment. Here we report evidence for a Wigner solid (WS) of such dipolar quasiholes from a quantitative study of the microwave spectra of a wide quantum well (WQW) at $ν$ close to 1/2.

Microwave Photoresistance in an Ultrahigh Quality GaAs Quantum Well

The temperature dependence of microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO), according to the theory, originates from electron-electron scattering. This scattering affects both the quantum lifetime, or the density of states, and the inelastic lifetime, which governs the relaxation of the nonequilibrium distribution function. Here, we report on MIRO in an ultrahigh mobility ($μ> 3 \times 10^7$ cm$^2$/Vs) 2D electron gas at $T$ between $0.3$ K and $1.8$ K. In contrast to theoretical predictions, the quantum lifetime is found to be $T$-independent in the whole temperature range studied. At the same time, the $T$-dependence of the inelastic lifetime is much \emph{stronger} than can be expected from electron-electron interactions.

Resistively detected high-order magnetoplasmons in a high-quality 2D electron gas

We report on high-order magnetoplasmon resonances detected in photoresistance in high-mobility GaAs quantum wells. These resonances manifest themselves as a series of photoresistance extrema in the regime of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Extending to orders above 20, the extrema exhibit alternating strength, being less (more) pronounced at even (odd) order magnetoplasmon modes. This experimental technique provides sensitive and elegant means to detect and investigate multiple magnetoplasmon modes and could be applied to other systems.

Observation of An Anisotropic Wigner Crystal

We report a new correlated phase of two-dimensional charged carriers in high magnetic fields, manifested by an anisotropic insulating behavior at low temperatures. It appears near Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$ in hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells when the sample is tilted in magnetic field to an intermediate angle. The parallel field component ($B_{||}$) leads to a crossing of the lowest two Landau levels, and an elongated hole wavefunction in the direction of $B_{||}$. Under these conditions, the in-plane resistance exhibits an insulating behavior, with the resistance along $B_{||}$ more than 10 times smaller than the resistance perpendicular to $B_{||}$. We interpret this anisotropic insulating phase as a two-component, striped Wigner crystal.

Unusual Landau Level Pinning and Correlated $ν=1$ Quantum Hall Effect in Hole Systems Confined to Wide GaAs Quantum Wells

In two-dimensional hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, where the heavy- and light- hole states are close in energy, we observe a very unusual crossing of the lowest two Landau levels as the sample is tilted in magnetic field. At a magic tilt angle $θ\simeq 34^{\circ}$, which surprisingly is independent of the well-width or hole density, in a large filling factor range near $ν=1$ the lowest two levels are nearly degenerate as evinced by the presence of two-component quantum Hall states. Remarkably, a quantum Hall state is seen at $ν=1$, consistent with a \textit{correlated} $Ψ_{111}$ state.

Optical emission spectroscopy study of competing phases of electrons in the second Landau level

Quantum phases of electrons in the filling factor range $2 \leqν\leq 3$ are probed by the weak optical emission from the partially populated second Landau level and spin wave measurements. Observations of optical emission include a multiplet of sharp peaks that exhibit a strong filling factor dependence. Spin wave measurements by resonant inelastic light scattering probe breaking of spin rotational invariance and are used to link this optical emission with collective phases of electrons. A remarkably rapid interplay between emission peak intensities manifests phase competition in the second Landau level.

Time-resolved observation of coherent excitonic nonlinear response with a table-top narrowband THz pulse wave

By combining a tilted-pulse-intensity-front scheme using a LiNbO3 crystal and a chirped-pulse-beating method, we generated a narrowband intense terahertz (THz) pulse, which had a maximum electric field of more than 10 kV/cm at around 2 THz, a bandwidth of about 50 GHz,and frequency tunability from 0.5 to 2 THz. By performing THz-pump and near-infrared-probe experiments on GaAs quantum wells, we observed that the resonant excitation of the intraexcitonic 1s-2p transition induces a clear and large Autler-Townes splitting. Our time-resolved measurements show that the splitting energy observed in the rising edge region of electric field is larger than in the constant region. This result implies that the splitting energy depends on the time-averaged THz field over the excitonic dephasing time rather than that at the instant of the exciton creation by a probe pulse.

Crossover between localized states and pinned Wigner crystal in high-mobility n-GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures near filling factor $ν=1$

We have measured magnetic field dependences of the attenuation and velocity of surface acoustic waves in a high-mobility $n$-GaAs/AlGaAs structure with a wide quantum well. The results allowed us to find the complex conductance, $σ(ω)$, of the heterostructure for different frequencies, temperatures and magnetic fields near filling factors $ν=1, 2$. Observed behavior of $σ(ω)$ versus magnetic field outside close vicinities of integer fillings reveals an oscillation pattern indicative of the rich fractional quantum Hall effect. Our result is that in very close vicinities of integer filling factors the AC response of a high-mobility two-dimensional structures behaves as that of a two-dimensional system of localized electrons. Namely, both real and imaginary parts of the complex AC conductance at low temperatures agree with the predictions for the two-site model for a two-dimensional hopping system. Another result is the specific temperature dependences of $σ(ω)$, which are extremely sensitive to the filling factor value. These dependences indicate a sharp crossover between the localized modes and a pinned Wigner crystal.

Surface Acoustic Waves Probe of the Spin Phase Transition at $ν$=2/3 in n-GaAs/AlGaAs structure

High frequency (ac) conductivity in the single quantum well AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs with high mobility was investigated by contactless acoustic methods in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime in perpendicular and tilted magnetic fields. We studied the dependence of ac conductivity $σ^{ac}=σ_1 - iσ_2$ on both the temperature and magnetic field tilt angle. Tilting the magnetic field relative to the sample surface enabled us to change the position of the conductivity oscillation minimum at $ν$=2/3. We measured the temperature dependence of ac conductivity for each tilt angle and for the 2/3 state we calculated the activation energy $ΔE$ which was derived by constructing the Arrhenius plot ln $σ_1$ against 1/$T$. Analyzing behavior of the activation energy in total magnetic field for the filling factor 2/3 we observed a distinct minimum which can be interpreted as the spin unpolarized-polarized phase transition.

Wigner crystal in a two-dimensional electron system in the vicinity of filling factor 1/5: Acoustic studies

By simultaneous measurements of the attenuation and velocity of surface acoustic waves propagating in proximity to a high-quality GaAs quantum well we study the complex AC conductance of the two-dimensional electron system. Focusing on the vicinity of the filling factor $ν=1/5$ we confirm that the insulating states formed closely to this value of $ν$ are pinned Wigner crystals.

Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in two-dimensional electron gas under subterahertz radiation

We report on magnetotransport measurements in a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas subject to subterahertz radiation in the regime where Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (SdHO) and microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) coexist over a wide magnetic field range, spanning several harmonics of the cyclotron resonance. Surprisingly, we find that the SdHO amplitude is modified by the radiation in a non-trivial way owing to the oscillatory correction which has the same period and phase as MIRO. This finding challenges our current understanding of microwave photoresistance in 2D electron gas, calling for future investigations.

Multicomponent fractional quantum Hall states with subband and spin degrees of freedom

In wide GaAs quantum wells where two electric subbands are occupied we apply a parallel magnetic field or increase the electron density to cause a crossing of the two $N=0$ Landau levels of these subbands and with opposite spins. Near the crossing, the fractional quantum Hall states in the filling factor range $1<ν<3$ exhibit a remarkable sequence of pseudospin polarization transitions resulting from the interplay between the spin and subband degrees of freedom. The field positions of the transitions yield a new and quantitative measure of the composite Fermions' discrete energy level separations. Surprisingly, the separations are smaller when the electrons have higher spin-polarization.

Gapped Excitations of unconventional FQHE states in the Second Landau Level

We report the observation of low-lying collective charge and spin excitations in the second Landau level at ν = 2 + 1/3 and also for the very fragile states at ν = 2 + 2/5, 2 + 3/8 in inelastic light scattering experiments. These modes exhibit a clear dependence on filling factor and temperature substantiating the unique access to the characteristic neutral excitation spectra of the incompressible FQHE states. A detailed mode analysis reveals low energy modes at around 70 μeV and a sharp mode slightly below the Zeeman energy interpreted as gap and spin wave excitation, respectively. The lowest energy collective charge excitation spectrum at ν = 2 + 1/3 exhibits significant similarities and a universal scaling of the energies with its cousin state in the lowest Landau level at ν = 1/3 suggesting similar underlying physics. The observed excitation spectra facilitate to distinguish between theoretical descriptions of the nature of those FQHE states. A striking polarization dependence in light scattering is discussed in the framework of anisotropic electron phases that allow for the stabilization of nematic FQHE states.

Evidence for a New Intermediate Phase in a Strongly Correlated 2D System near Wigner Crystallization

How the two dimensional (2D) quantum Wigner crystal (WC) transforms into the metallic liquid phase remains to be an outstanding problem in physics. In theories considering the 2D WC to liquid transition in the clean limit, it was suggested that a number of intermediate phases might exist. We have studied the transformation between the metallic fluid phase and the low magnetic field reentrant insulating phase (RIP) which was interpreted as due to WC formation [Qiu et al, PRL 108, 106404 (2012)], in a strongly correlated 2D hole system with large interaction parameter $r_s$ ($\sim~$20-30) and high mobility. Instead of a sharp transition, we found that increasing density (or lowering $r_s$) drives the RIP into a state where the incipient RIP coexists with Fermi liquid. This apparent mixture phase intermediate between Fermi liquid and WC also exhibits a non-trivial temperature dependent resistivity behavior which may be qualitatively understood by the reversed melting of WC in the mixture, in analogy to the Pomeranchuk effect in the solid-liquid mixture of Helium-3.

Heterostructure Symmetry and the Orientation of the Quantum Hall Nematic Phases

Clean two-dimensional electron systems in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures exhibit anisotropic collective phases, the quantum Hall nematics, at high Landau level occupancy and low temperatures. An as yet unknown native symmetry-breaking potential consistently orients these phases relative to the crystalline axes of the host material. Here we report an extensive set of measurements examining the role of the structural symmetries of the heterostructure in determining the orientation of the nematics. In single quantum well samples we find that neither the local symmetry of the confinement potential nor the distance between the electron system and the sample surface dictates the orientation of the nematic. In remarkable contrast, for two-dimensional electrons confined at a single heterointerface between GaAs and AlGaAs, the nematic orientation depends on the depth of the two-dimensional electron system beneath the sample surface.

Second Landau Level Fractional Quantum Hall Effects in the Corbino Geometry

For certain measurements, the Corbino geometry has a distinct advantage over the Hall and van der Pauw geometries, in that it provides a direct probe of the bulk 2DEG without complications due to edge effects. This may be important in enabling detection of the non-Abelian entropy of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state via bulk thermodynamic measurements. We report the successful fabrication and measurement of a Corbino-geometry sample in an ultra-high mobility GaAs heterostructure, with a focus on transport in the second and higher Landau levels. In particular, we report activation energy gaps of fractional quantum Hall states, with all edge effects ruled out, and extrapolate the conductivity prefactor from the Arrhenius fits. Our results show that activated transport in the second Landau level remains poorly understood. The development of this Corbino device opens the possibility to study the bulk of the 5/2 state using techniques not possible in other geometries.
