Structural and magnetic phases of topological kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ under pressure

We investigate the pressure-induced evolution of crystal structure and magnetism in the kagome ferromagnet Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ by combining X-ray diffraction, X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism, and spin-polarized density functional theory calculations. X-ray diffraction reveals a structural phase transition above $\sim$20~GPa, which coincides with a pronounced reduction of the local Fe magnetic moment evidenced by X-ray emission spectroscopy, indicating a high-spin to low-spin transition. While XES probes the amplitude of the local moment, XMCD provides direct information on the orientation of the ordered magnetic moments and uncovers a rich pressure--temperature magnetic phase diagram. At room temperature, a collinear ferromagnetic phase with moments aligned along the $c$ axis persists up to the structural transition. At low temperature, a tilted magnetic configuration remains stable to significantly higher pressures, while at intermediate temperatures pressure stabilizes the low-temperature magnetic phase at the expense of the high-temperature one. Spin-polarized first-principles calculations show that, although isotropic ferromagnetic exchange interactions remain robust under compression, pressure enhances spin--orbit--driven magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interactions, favoring non-collinear magnetic configurations. Our results demonstrate that pressure reshapes the magnetic energy landscape of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ by coupling lattice, spin state, and relativistic magnetic interactions, establishing hydrostatic pressure as an effective control parameter to engineer magnetic anisotropy and potentially topological phases in kagome materials.

Electronic ground-state hysteresis under magnetic field in GdMn$_2$O$_5$

In this paper, we investigate the physical properties of the type II multiferroic GdMn$_2$O$_5$ material by means of neutrons scattering, electric polarization and magnetization measurements. A complex $(T,H)$ phase diagram shows up, with especially a field induced magnetic transition around 12 T at low temperature. The high field phase is accompanied by an additional electric polarization along both the $a$ and $$b directions, as authorized by symmetry, but never observed experimentally up to now. While the magnetic properties recover their initial states after driving the field back to zero, the polarization along $a$ shows a significant increase. This behavior is observed for all directions of the magnetic field. It constitutes a novel and striking manifestation of the magneto-electric coupling, resulting in the establishment of a new ground state at zero magnetic field.

Vibrational and mechanical properties of the highly mismatched (Cd,Be)Te semiconductor alloy : Experiment and ab initio calculations

The (Cd, Be)Te semiconductor alloy that exhibits a dramatic mismatch in bond covalency and stiffness clarifying its vibrational and mechanical properties is used as a benchmark to test the limits of the percolation model (PM) worked out to explain the complex Raman spectra of the related but less contrasted (Zn, Be) chalcogenides. The test is done by way of experiment (x smaller than 0.11) combining Raman scattering with X ray diffraction at high pressure and ab initio calculations (x around 0, 0.5 and 1). The (macroscopic) bulk modulus B drops below the CdTe value on minor Be incorporation, at variance with a linear B versus x increase predicted ab initio, thus hinting at large anharmonic effects in the real crystal. Yet, no anomaly occurs at the microscopic (bond) scale as the regular bimodal PM Raman signal predicted ab initio for the BeTe bond in minority (x around 0 and 0.5) is (barely) detected experimentally. Although at large Be content (x around 1) the same bimodal signal relaxes down to inversion, an unprecedented case, specific pressure dependencies of the regular (x around 0 and 0.5) and inverted (x around 1) BeTe Raman doublets are in line with PM predictions. Hence, the PM applies as such to (Cd, Be)Te albeit in a relaxed form, without further refinement. This enhances the scheme validity as a generic descriptor of phonons in alloys.

Recent progress in high pressure X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies at the ODE beamline

High pressure energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a valuable structural technique, especially, when combined with a nano-polycrystalline diamond anvil cell. Here we present recent results obtained using the dispersive setup of the ODE beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron. The effect of pressure and temperature on the X-ray induced photoreduction is discussed on the example of nanocrystalline CuO. The possibility to follow local environment changes during pressure-induced phase transitions is demonstrated for alpha-MoO3 based on the reverse Monte Carlo simulations.
