Evidence for a QCD accelerator in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We report measurements of forward jets produced in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The jet-energy distributions extend to energies much larger than expected by Feynman scaling. This constitutes the first clear evidence for Feynman-scaling violations in heavy-ion collisions. Such high-energy particle production has been in models via QCD string interactions, but so far is untested by experiment. One such model calls this a hadronic accelerator. Studies with a particular heavy-ion event generator (HIJING) show that photons and mesons exhibit such very high-energy production in a heavy-ion collision, so {\it QCD accelerator} appropriately captures the physics associated with such QCD string interactions. All models other than HIJING used for hadronic interactions in the study of extensive air showers from cosmic rays either do not include these QCD string interactions, or have smaller effects from the QCD accelerator.

Observation of Feynman scaling violations and evidence for a new resonance at RHIC

We report measurements of forward jets and dijets produced in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We also report dijet production cross sections in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. We use the invariant dijet mass to search for indications of new particles. The p+p dijet results are compatible with string fragmentation models tuned to fit LHC data. The Cu+Au jet results far exceed Feynman scaling limits, and are compatible with models that incorporate string fusion to increase parton energy, acting as a QCD accelerator. The Cu+Au dijet results can be mostly explained by double parton scattering due to a parton flux from multiple p+p interactions with $\sqrt{s}>>\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. Further indication of the increased parton energy is obtained from evidence of single- and double-$Υ$(1S) production in the forward direction in Cu+Au collisions. Finally, we report evidence for the production of a new resonance, reconstructed from its dijet decay.

Cross Sections and Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries in Forward Jet Production from Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV

Measurements of the production of forward jets from transversely polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV conducted at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are reported. Our measured jet cross section is consistent with hard scattering expectations. Our measured analyzing power for forward jet production is small and positive, and provides constraints on the Sivers functions that are related to partonic orbital angular momentum through theoretical models.

Measurements of Forward Jet Production in Polarized pp Collisions at \sqrt{s}=500 GeV

The AnDY project at RHIC was proposed to measure the analyzing power for Drell-Yan production. Test runs took place during polarized proton operations of RHIC in 2011 and 2012 with a model of the AnDY apparatus in place. In total, an integrated luminosity of 9 pb^-1 with beam polarization of 50% was sampled. The primary detector components were a hadron calorimeter (HCal) that spanned the pseudorapidity interval 2.4 < η< 4.0 and a small electromagnetic calorimeter (ECal). Basic goals for AnDY test running were to establish the impact of a third interaction region on RHIC performance and to demonstrate HCal calibration. Energy scale of HCal was established using neutral pion reconstruction and checked with hadronic response. In addition, data with a trigger based on HCal energy sum were taken to study jet events. First measurements of analyzing power in the forward jet production are reported.

A feasibility experiment at RHIC to measure the analyzing power for Drell-Yan production (ANDY)

Large transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) were measured for pions produced in pp-collisions up to RHIC energies. Sizeable SSA were also found in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Theory can explain such spin effects by going beyond collinear leading-twist perturbative QCD (pQCD) to include transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution and fragmentation functions. One of the most interesting TMDs is the Sivers function, which provides information on the correlation between the transverse spin of the nucleon and the transverse momentum distributions of the partons in the nucleon. It is particularly intriguing that theory predicts the Sivers function will change sign from SIDIS to Drell-Yan (DY) production. ANDY is aiming to test that prediction and to establish requirements for future upgrades at RHIC to study DY production. The experiment configuration, achievements to date, status and plans are discussed.

Measurements of transverse spin effects in the forward region with the STAR detector

Measurements by the STAR collaboration of the cross section and transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) of neutral pion production at large Feynman x (x_F) in pp-collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV were reported previously. The x_F dependence of the asymmetry can be described by phenomenological models that include the Sivers effect, Collins effect or higher twist contributions in the initial and final states. Discriminating between the Sivers and Collins effects requires one to go beyond inclusive π^0 measurements. For the 2008 run, forward calorimetry at STAR was significantly extended. The large acceptance of the Forward Meson Spectrometer (FMS) allows us to look at heavier meson states and π^0-π^0 correlations. Recent results, the status of current analyses and near-term plans will be discussed.

Measurements of Transverse Spin Effects with the Forward Pion Detector of STAR

Measurements by the STAR collaboration of neutral pion production at large Feynman x (x_F) in the first polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were reported previously. Cross sections measured at $η=3.3$, 3.8 and 4.0 are found to be consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is consistent with zero at negative x_F and at positive x_F up to ~0.3, then grows more positive with increasing x_F. This behavior can be described by phenomenological models including the Sivers effect, the Collins effect or higher twist contributions in the initial and final states. Forward calorimetry at STAR has been extended, and there are plans for further expansion. An integrated luminosity of 6.8 pb^${-1}$ with average beam polarization of 60% from online polarimetry measurements was sampled with the upgraded FPD in the 2006 RHIC run. This data sample will allow for a detailed map of the π^0 analyzing power over kinematic variables bounded by 0.3 < x_F < 0.6 and 1.2 < p_T < 5.0 GeV/c at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. The expanded FPD has observed multi-photon final states expected to have "jet-like" characteristics. The transverse spin dependence of jet-like events can discriminate between the Collins and Sivers effects and lead to further progress in understanding the origin of single spin asymmetries in forward particle production. Data were also obtained at $\sqrt{s}=62.4$ GeV for x_F -> 1 to test predictions based on phenomenological fits to earlier STAR results. Recent results, the status of the analysis of 2006 run data and near-term plans will be discussed.

Comparison of Radiation Damage in Lead Tungstate Crystals under Pion and Gamma Irradiation

Studies of the radiation hardness of lead tungstate crystals produced by the Bogoroditsk Techno-Chemical Plant in Russia and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in China have been carried out at IHEP, Protvino. The crystals were irradiated by a 40-GeV pion beam. After full recovery, the same crystals were irradiated using a $^{137}Cs$ $γ$-ray source. The dose rate profiles along the crystal length were observed to be quite similar. We compare the effects of the two types of radiation on the crystals light output.

Single-Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive $π^0$ Production Measured at the Protvino 70 GeV Accelerator

Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) $A_N$ measured in the two reactions at the Protvino 70 GeV accelerator are presented. $A_N$ in the reaction $p+p(pol)->π^0+X$ in the central region is close to zero within the error bars. SSA in the reaction $π^- +p(pol)->π^0+X$ in the polarized target fragmentation region is equal to $(-15 \pm 4)%$ at $|x_F|>0.4$. There is an indication that the asymmetry arises at the same pion energy in the center of mass system.

Recent Results from Protvino Polarized Experiment Proza-M

Single Spin Asymmetry $A_N$ (SSA) was measured at the Protvino 70 GeV accelerator. Asymmetry in the reaction $\ppdup$ is close to zero within error bars at small $|\xf|$ and $p_T<1.5$ GeV/c. SSA in the reaction $\pimp$ at polarized target fragmentation region equals to $(-13.8 \pm 3.8)%$ at $|x_f|>0.4$. There is an indication that the asymmetry begins to rise up at the same centre of mass system pion energy.
