One dimensionalization in the spin-1 Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice

We investigate the effect of dimensional crossover in the ground state of the antiferromagnetic spin-$1$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice that interpolates between the regime of weakly coupled Haldane chains ($J^{\prime}\! \!\ll\!\! J$) and the isotropic triangular lattice ($J^{\prime}\!\!=\!\!J$). We use the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and Schwinger boson theory performed at the Gaussian correction level above the saddle-point solution. Our DMRG results show an abrupt transition between decoupled spin chains and the spirally ordered regime at $(J^{\prime}/J)_c\sim 0.42$, signaled by the sudden closing of the spin gap. Coming from the magnetically ordered side, the computation of the spin stiffness within Schwinger boson theory predicts the instability of the spiral magnetic order toward a magnetically disordered phase with one-dimensional features at $(J^{\prime}/J)_c \sim 0.43$. The agreement of these complementary methods, along with the strong difference found between the intra- and the interchain DMRG short spin-spin correlations; for sufficiently large values of the interchain coupling, suggests that the interplay between the quantum fluctuations and the dimensional crossover effects gives rise to the one-dimensionalization phenomenon in this frustrated spin-$1$ Hamiltonian.

Evolution of Nagaoka phase with kinetic energy frustrating hoppings

We investigate, using the density matrix renormalization group, the evolution of the Nagaoka state with $t'$ hoppings that frustrate the hole kinetic energy in the $U=\infty$ Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice and the square lattice with second-nearest neighbor hoppings. We find that the Nagaoka ferromagnet survives up to a rather small $t'_c/t \sim 0.2.$ At this critical value, there is a transition to an antiferromagnetic phase, that depends on the lattice: a ${\bf Q}=(Q,0)$ spiral order, that continuously evolves with $t'$, for the triangular lattice, and the usual ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$ Néel order for the square lattice. Remarkably, the local magnetization takes its classical value for all considered $t'$ ($t'/t \le 1$). Our results show that the recently found classical kinetic antiferromagnetism, a perfect counterpart of Nagaoka ferromagnetism, is a generic phenomenon in these kinetically frustrated electronic systems.

Kondo behavior and conductance through $3d$ impurities in gold chains doped with oxygen

Combining ab initio calculations and effective models derived from them, we discuss the electronic structure of oxygen doped gold chains when one Au atom is replaced by any transition-metal atom of the $3d$ series. The effect of O doping is to bring extended Au $5d_{xz}$ and $5d_{yz}$ states to the Fermi level, which together with the Au states of zero angular momentum projection, lead to three possible channels for the screening of the magnetism of the impurity. For most 3d impurities the expected physics is similar to that of the underscreened Kondo model, with singular Fermi liquid behavior. For Fe and Co under a tetragonal crystal field introduced by leads, the system might display a non-Fermi liquid behavior. Ni and Cu impurities are described by a $S = 1$ two channel Kondo model and an SU(4) impurity Anderson model in the intermediate valence regime, respectively. In both cases, the system is a Fermi liquid, but the conductance shows some observable differences with the ordinary SU(2) Anderson model.

Qualitative breakdown of the non-crossing approximation for the symmetric one-channel Anderson impurity model at all temperatures

The Anderson impurity model is studied by means of the self-consistent hybridization expansions in its non-crossing (NCA) and one-crossing (OCA) approximations. We have found that for the one-channel spin-$1/2$ particle-hole symmetric Anderson model, the NCA results are qualitatively wrong for any temperature, even when the approximation gives the exact threshold exponents of the ionic states. Actually, the NCA solution describes an overscreened Kondo effect, because it is the same as for the two-channel infinite-$U$ single level Anderson model. We explicitly show that the NCA is unable to distinguish between these two very different physical systems, independently of temperature. Using the impurity entropy as an example, we show that the low temperature values of the NCA entropy for the symmetric case yield the limit $S_{imp}(T=0)\rightarrow \ln\sqrt{2},$ which corresponds to the zero temperature entropy of the overscreened Kondo model. Similar pathologies are predicted for any other thermodynamic property. On the other hand, we have found that the OCA approach lifts the artificial mapping between the models and restores correct properties of the ground-state, for instance, a vanishing entropy at low enough temperatures $S_{imp}(T=0)\rightarrow0$. Our results indicate that the very well known NCA should be used with caution close to the symmetric point of the Anderson model.

RVB signatures in the spin dynamics of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We investigate the spin dynamics of the square-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet by means of an improved mean field Schwinger boson calculation. By identifying both, the long range Néel and the RVB-like components of the ground state, we propose an educated guess for the mean field triplet excitation consisting on a linear combination of local and bond spin flips to compute the dynamical structure factor. Our main result is that when this triplet excitation is optimized in such a way that the corresponding sum rule is fulfilled, we recover the low and high energy spectral weight features of the experimental spectrum. In particular, the anomalous spectral weight depletion at $(π,0)$ found in recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments can be attributed to the interference of the triplet bond excitations of the RVB component of the ground state. We conclude that the Schwinger boson theory seems to be a good candidate to adequately interpret the dynamic properties of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Reliability of the one-crossing approximation in describing the Mott transition

We assess the reliability of the one-crossing approximation (OCA) approach in quantitative description of the Mott transition in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The OCA approach has been applied in the conjunction with DMFT to a number of heavy-fermion, actinide, transition metal compounds, and nanoscale systems. However, several recent studies in the framework of impurity models pointed out to serious deficiencies of OCA and raised questions regarding its reliability. Here we consider a single band Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice at finite temperatures and compare the results of OCA to those of a numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The temperature-local repulsion U phase diagram for the particle-hole symmetric case obtained by OCA is in good agreement with that of QMC, with the metal-insulator transition captured very well. We find, however, that the insulator to metal transition is shifted to higher values of U and, simultaneously, correlations in the metallic phase are significantly overestimated. This counter-intuitive behavior is due to simultaneous underestimations of the Kondo scale in the metallic phase and the size of the insulating gap. We trace the underestimation of the insulating gap to that of the second moment of the high-frequency expansion of the impurity spectral density. Calculations for the system away from the particle-hole symmetric case are also presented and discussed.

Kondo physics in a Ni impurity embedded in O-doped Au chains

By means of ab initio calculations we study the effect of O-doping of Au chains containing a nanocontact represented by a Ni atom as a magnetic impurity. In contrast to pure Au chains, we find that with a minimun O-doping the $5d_{xz,yz}$ states of Au are pushed up, crossing the Fermi level. We also find that for certain O configurations, the Ni atom has two holes in the degenerate $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals, forming a spin $S=1$ due to a large Hund interaction. The coupling between the $5d_{xz,yz}$ Au bands and the $3d_{xz,yz}$ of Ni states leads to a possible realization of a two-channel $S=1$ Kondo effect. While this kind of Kondo effect is commonly found in bulk systems, it is rarely observed in low dimensions. The estimated Kondo scale of the system lies within the present achievable experimental resolution in transport measurements. Another possible scenario for certain atomic configurations is that one of the holes resides in a $3d_{z^2}$ orbital, leading to a two-stage Kondo effect, the second one with SU(4) symmetry.

Magnons and Excitation Continuum in XXZ triangular antiferromagnetic model: Application to $Ba_3CoSb_2O_9$

We investigate the excitation spectrum of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model using series expansions and mean field Schwinger bosons approaches. The single-magnon spectrum computed with series expansions exhibits rotonic minima at the middle points of the edges of the Brillouin zone, for all values of the anisotropy parameter in the range $0\leq J^z/J\leq1$. Based on the good agreement with series expansions for the single-magnon spectrum, we compute the full dynamical magnetic structure factor within the mean field Schwinger boson approach to investigate the relevance of the $XXZ$ model for the description of the unusual spectrum found recently in $Ba_3CoSb_2O_9$. In particular, we obtain an extended continuum above the spin wave excitations, which is further enhanced and brought closer to those observed in $Ba_3CoSb_2O_9$ with the addition of a second neighbor exchange interaction approximately 15% of the nearest-neighbor value. Our results support the idea that excitation continuum with substantial spectral-weight are generically present in two-dimensional frustrated spin systems and fractionalization in terms of {\it bosonic} spinons presents an efficient way to describe them.

Classical Antiferromagnetism in Kinetically Frustrated Electronic Models

We study the infinite U Hubbard model with one hole doped away half-filling, in triangular and square lattices with frustrated hoppings that invalidate Nagaoka's theorem, by means of the density matrix renormalization group. We find that these kinetically frustrated models have antiferromagnetic ground states with classical local magnetization in the thermodynamic limit. We identify the mechanism of this kinetic antiferromagnetism with the release of the kinetic energy frustration as the hole moves in the established antiferromagnetic background. This release can occurs in two different ways: by a non-trivial spin-Berry phase acquired by the hole or by the effective vanishing of the hopping amplitude along the frustrating loops.

Broken discrete and continuous symmetries in two dimensional spiral antiferromagnets

We study the occurrence of symmetry breakings, at zero and finite temperatures, in the J_1-J_3 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice using Schwinger boson mean field theory. For spin-1/2 the ground state breaks always the SU(2) symmetry with a continuous quasi-critical transition at J_3/J_1=0.38, from Néel to spiral long range order, although local spin fluctuations considerations suggest an intermediate disordered regime around 0.35 < J_3/J_1 < 0.5, in qualitative agreement with recent numerical results. At low temperatures we find a Z_2 broken symmetry region with short range spiral order characterized by an Ising-like nematic order parameter that compares qualitatively well with classical Monte Carlo results. At intermediate temperatures the phase diagram shows regions with collinear short range orders: for J_3/J_1<1 Néel (π,π) correlations and for J_3/J_1>1 a novel phase consisting of four decoupled third neighbour sublattices with Néel (π,π) correlations in each one. We conclude that the effect of quantum and thermal fluctuations is to favour collinear correlations even in the strongly frustrated regime.

Low temperature properties of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet: a bosonic spinon theory

We study the low temperature properties of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a mean field Schwinger spin-1/2 boson scheme that reproduces quantitatively the zero temperature energy spectrum derived previously using series expansions. By analyzing the spin-spin and the boson density-density dynamical structure factors, we identify the unphysical spin excitations that come from the relaxation of the local constraint on bosons. This allows us to reconstruct a free energy based on the physical excitations only, whose predictions for entropy and uniform susceptibility seem to be reliable within the temperature range $0< T <0.3J, which is difficult to access by other methods. The high values of entropy, also found in high temperature expansions studies, can be attributed to the roton-like narrowed dispersion at finite temperatures.

Effects of semiclassical spiral fluctuations on hole dynamics

We investigate the dynamics of a single hole coupled to the spiral fluctuations related to the magnetic ground states of the antiferromagnetic J_1-J_2-J_3 Heisenberg model on a square lattice. Using exact diagonalization on finite size clusters and the self consistent Born approximation in the thermodynamic limit we find, as a general feature, a strong reduction of the quasiparticle weight along the spiral phases of the magnetic phase diagram. For an important region of the Brillouin Zone the hole spectral functions are completely incoherent, whereas at low energies the spectral weight is redistributed on several irregular peaks. We find a characteristic value of the spiral pitch, Q=(0.7,0.7)π, for which the available phase space for hole scattering is maximum. We argue that this behavior is due to the non trivial interference of the magnon assisted and the free hopping mechanism for hole motion, characteristic of a hole coupled to semiclassical spiral fluctuations.

A test of the bosonic spinon theory for the triangular antiferromagnet spectrum

We compute the dynamical structure factor of the spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model using the mean field Schwinger boson theory. We find that a reconstructed dispersion, resulting from a non trivial redistribution of the spectral weight, agrees quite well with the spin excitation spectrum recently found with series expansions. In particular, we recover the strong renormalization with respect to linear spin wave theory along with the appearance of roton-like minima. Furthermore, near the roton-like minima the contribution of the two spinon continuum to the static structure factor is about 40 % of the total weight. By computing the density-density dynamical structure factor, we identify an unphysical weak signal of the spin excitation spectrum with the relaxation of the local constraint of the Schwinger bosons at the mean field level. Based on the accurate description obtained for the static and dynamic ground state properties, we argue that the bosonic spinon theory should be considered seriously as a valid alternative to interpret the physics of the triangular Heisenberg model.

Kondo temperature and crystal field levels of Ce systems within a finite U Non-Crossing Approximation

We calculate the Kondo temperature ($T_K$) and crystal-field levels of strongly correlated multiorbital systems solving the Anderson Impurity Model with the finite U Non-Crossing Approximation (UNCA) in its simplest scheme, that is, considering the self energies at lowest order in the 1/N diagrammatic expansion. We introduced an approximation to the vertex function that includes the double energy dependence and investigate its effect on the values of $T_K$ for simple electronic models. We also analyze the competition between the two spin flip mechanisms, involving virtual transitions to empty and doubly occupied states, in the determination of the ground state symmetry by including an extra diagram of higher order in $1/N.$ We finally combine the resulting simple formalism with {\it ab initio} calculated electronic structures to obtain $T_K$'s, ground states, and crystal field splittings in excellent agreement with experimental results for two particular Ce compounds, namely CeIn$_3$ and CeSn$_3$.

Spin polaron in the J1-J2 Heisenberg model

We have studied the validity of the spin polaron picture in the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model. For this purpose, we have computed the hole spectral functions for the Neel, collinear, and disordered phases of this model, by means of the self-consistent Born approximation and Lanczos exact diagonalization on finite-size clusters. We have found that the spin polaron quasiparticle excitation is always well defined for the magnetically ordered Neel and collinear phases, even in the vicinity of the magnetic quantum critical points, where the local magnetization vanishes. As a general feature, the effect of frustration is to increase the amplitude of the multimagnon states that build up the spin polaron wave function, leading to the reduction of the quasiparticle coherence. Based on Lanczos results, we discuss the validity of the spin polaron picture in the disordered phase.

Spectroscopic fingerprints of the frustrated magnetic order in Li2VOSiO4: a t-J model study

We have analyzed theoretically the photoemission spectra of the insulating compound Li2VOSiO4.Recently, this compound has been proposed as the first experimental realization of the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model. Although it is well known that Li2VOSiO4 is magnetically ordered in a collinear arrangement below TN=2.8 K, there is some controversy about the coexistence of two collinear phases above TN. Using a generalized t-J model we have obtained a complex spectral structure that can be traced back to the underlying collinear magnetic structures. We discuss the possibility to use ARPES experiments as a way to discern among the different scenarios proposed in the literature.

Hole dynamics in canted antiferromagnets

We have analyzed the dynamics of a single hole doped in a canted antiferromagnet using the t-J model. Within the self consistent Born approximation we have found that the hole propagates at two different energy scales along the antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic components of the canted order, respectively. While the many body quasiparticle excitation has its origin in the coherent coupling of the hole with the magnon excitations of the antiferromagnetic component, the ferromagnetic component gives rise to a free like hole motion at higher energies. We have found a non-trivial behavior of the hole spectral function with the canting angle. In particular, in the strong coupling regime, the quasiparticle weight strongly depends on the momenta, vanishing inside the magnetic Brillouin zone for a canting angle greater than 60 degree.

1/T_1 nuclear relaxation time of κ-(BEDT-TTF)_ 2 Cu [N(CN)_2] Cl : effects of magnetic frustration

We study the role played by the magnetic frustration in the antiferromagnetic phase of the organic salt κ-(BEDT-TTF)_ 2 Cu [N(CN)_2] Cl. Using the spatially anisotropic triangular Heisenberg model we analyze previous and new performed NMR experiments. We compute the 1/T_1 relaxation time by means of the modified spin wave theory. The strong suppression of the nuclear relaxation time observed experimentally under varying pressure and magnetic field is qualitatively well reproduced by the model. Our results suggest the existence of a close relation between the effects of pressure and magnetic frustration.
