dHybrid: a massively parallel code for hybrid simulations of space plasmas

A massively parallel simulation code, called \textit{dHybrid}, has been developed to perform global scale studies of space plasma interactions. This code is based on an explicit hybrid model; the numerical stability and parallel scalability of the code are studied. A stabilization method for the explicit algorithm, for regions of near zero density, is proposed. Three-dimensional hybrid simulations of the interaction of the solar wind with unmagnetized artificial objects are presented, with a focus on the expansion of a plasma cloud into the solar wind, which creates a diamagnetic cavity and drives the Interplanetary Magnetic Field out of the expansion region. The dynamics of this system can provide insights into other similar scenarios, such as the interaction of the solar wind with unmagnetized planets.

Physical problems (microphysics) in relativistic plasma flows

Many problems in astrophysics involve relativistic outflows. The plasma dynamics in these scenarios is critical to determine the conditions for the self-consistent evolution of the fields and particle acceleration. Advances in computer power now allow for kinetic plasma simulations, based on the particle-in-cell (PIC) paradigm, capable of providing information about the role of plasma instabilities in relativistic outflows. A discussion of the key issues associated with PIC simulations is presented, along with some the most important results and open questions, with a particular emphasis on the long time evolution of the filamentation, or Weibel, instability, and on the possible collisionless mechanisms for particle acceleration arising in the collision of relativistic plasma shells.

Baryon loading and the Weibel instability in gamma-ray bursts

The dynamics of two counter-streaming electron-positron-ion unmagnetized plasma shells with zero net charge is analyzed in the context of magnetic field generation in GRB internal shocks due to the Weibel instability. The effects of large thermal motion of plasma particles, arbitrary mixture of plasma species and space charge effects are taken into account. We show that, although thermal effects slow down the instability, baryon loading leads to a non-negligible growth rate even for large temperatures and different shell velocities, thus guaranteeing the robustness and the occurrence of the Weibel instability for a wide range of scenarios.

Controlled Shock Shells and Intracluster Fusion Reactions in the Explosion of Large Clusters

The ion phase-space dynamics in the Coulomb explosion of very large ($\sim 10^6 - 10^7$ atoms) deuterium clusters can be tailored using two consecutive laser pulses with different intensities and an appropriate time delay. For suitable sets of laser parameters (intensities and delay), large-scale shock shells form during the explosion, thus highly increasing the probability of fusion reactions within the single exploding clusters. In order to analyze the ion dynamics and evaluate the intracluster reaction rate, a one-dimensional theory is used, which approximately accounts for the electron expulsion from the clusters. It is found that, for very large clusters (initial radius $\sim$ 100 nm), and optimal laser parameters, the intracluster fusion yield becomes comparable to the intercluster fusion yield. The validity of the results is confirmed with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Kinetics of the collisionless expansion of spherical nanoplasmas

The collisionless expansion of spherical plasmas composed of cold ions and hot electrons is analyzed using a novel kinetic model, with special emphasis on the influence of the electron dynamics. Simple, general laws are found, relating the relevant expansion features to the initial conditions of the plasma, determined from a single dimensionless parameter. A transition is identified in the behavior of the ion energy spectrum, which is monotonic only for high electron temperatures, otherwise exhibiting a local peak far from the cutoff energy.

A global simulation for laser driven MeV electrons in $50μm$-diameter fast ignition targets

The results from 2.5-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations for the interaction of a picosecond-long ignition laser pulse with a plasma pellet of 50-$μm$ diameter and 40 critical density are presented. The high density pellet is surrounded by an underdense corona and is isolated by a vacuum region from the simulation box boundary. The laser pulse is shown to filament and create density channels on the laser-plasma interface. The density channels increase the laser absorption efficiency and help generate an energetic electron distribution with a large angular spread. The combined distribution of the forward-going energetic electrons and the induced return electrons is marginally unstable to the current filament instability. The ions play an important role in neutralizing the space charges induced by the the temperature disparity between different electron groups. No global coalescing of the current filaments resulted from the instability is observed, consistent with the observed large angular spread of the energetic electrons.

Very High Mach Number Electrostatic Shocks in Collisionless Plasmas

The kinetic theory of collisionless electrostatic shocks resulting from the collision of plasma slabs with different temperatures and densities is presented. The theoretical results are confirmed by self-consistent particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the formation and stable propagation of electrostatic shocks with very high Mach numbers ($M \gg 10$), well above the predictions of the classical theories for electrostatic shocks.

Wigner-Moyal description of free variable mass Klein-Gordon fields

A system of coupled kinetic transport equations for the Wigner distributions of a free variable mass Klein-Gordon field is derived. This set of equations is formally equivalent to the full wave equation for electromagnetic waves in nonlinear dispersive media, thus allowing for the description of broadband radiation-matter interactions and the associated instabilities. The standard results for the classical wave action are recovered in the short wavelength limit of the generalized Wigner-Moyal formalism for the wave equation.

Interpenetrating plasma shells: near-equipartition magnetic field generation and non-thermal particle acceleration

We present the first three-dimensional fully kinetic electromagnetic relativistic particle-in-cell simulations of the collision of two interpenetrating plasma shells. The highly accurate plasma-kinetic "particle-in-cell" (with the total of $10^8$ particles) parallel code OSIRIS has been used. Our simulations show: (i) the generation of long-lived near-equipartition (electro)magnetic fields, (ii) non-thermal particle acceleration, and (iii) short-scale to long-scale magnetic field evolution, in the collision region. Our results provide new insights into the magnetic field generation and particle acceleration in relativistic and sub-relativistic colliding streams of particles, which are present in gamma-ray bursters, supernova remnants, relativistic jets, pulsar winds, etc..

Comment on "Ponderomotive force due to neutrinos"

The derivation of the ponderomotive force due to neutrinos by Hardy and Melrose, Phys.Rev.D v.54, p.6491 (1996) is based on a flawed analysis of the ponderomotive force concept. Their conclusions also contain an erroneous physical assumption related to the neutrino emission in supernovae. A correct analysis shows the importance of the ponderomotive force due to neutrinos in type II supernovae explosions.

Ponderomotive force of quasi-particles in a plasma

We derive the force exerted in the background plasma by an arbitrary distribution of non interacting quasi-particles, corresponding to either collective excitations of the plasma (plasmons, phonons) or em dressed particles (photons, neutrinos). Our approach is based on the effective Hamiltonian describing the quasi-classical dynamics of the individual particles in the presence of a background medium. We recover the usual results for the relativistic ponderomotive force of a photon gas, and we derive the force, due to weak interactions, exerted by the electron-neutrinos in a background medium containing electrons, positrons and neutrons with arbitrary distribution functions. Generalization to other background species and other neutrino flavors is also discussed.
