Interacting vacuum energy in the dark sector

We analyse three cosmological scenarios with interaction in the dark sector, which are particular cases of a general expression for the energy flux from vacuum to matter. In the first case the interaction leads to a transition from an unstable de Sitter phase to a radiation dominated universe, avoiding in this way the initial singularity. In the second case the interaction gives rise to a slow-roll power-law inflation. Finally, the third scenario is a concordance model for the late-time universe, with the vacuum term decaying into cold dark matter. We identify the physics behind these forms of interaction and show that they can be described as particular types of the modified Chaplygin gas.

Enhanced Inflation in the Dirac-Born-Infeld framework

We consider the Einstein equations within the DBI scenario for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime without a cosmological constant. We derive the inflationary scenario by applying the symmetry transformations which preserve the form of the Friedmann and conservation equations. These form invariance transformations generate a symmetry group parametrized by the Lorentz factor $\ga$. We explicitly obtain an inflationary scenario by the cooperative effect of adding energy density into the Friedmann equation. For the case of a constant Lorentz factor, and under the slow roll assumption, we find the transformation rules for the scalar and tensor power spectra of perturbations as well as their ratio under the action of the form invariance symmetry group. Within this case and due to its relevance for the inflationary paradigm, we find the general solution of the dynamical equations for a DBI field driven by an exponential potential and show a broad set of inflationary solutions. The general solution can be split into three subsets and all these behave asymptotically as a power law solution at early and at late times.

Dark matter to dark energy transition in k-essence cosmologies

We implement the transition from dark matter to dark energy in k-essence cosmologies for a very large set of kinetic functions $F$, in a way alternative to recent proposals which use generalized Chaplygin gas and transient models. Here we require that the pressure admits a power-law expansion around some value of the kinetic energy where the pressure vanishes. In addition, for suitable values of the parameters of the model, the speed of sound of the dark matter will be low. We first present the discussion in fairly general terms, and later consider for illustration two examples.

Interacting quintessence and the coincidence problem

We investigate the role of a possible coupling of dark matter and dark energy. In particular, we explore the consequences of such an interaction for the coincidence problem, i.e., for the question, why the energy densities of dark matter and dark energy are of the same order just at the present epoch. We demonstrate, that, with the help of a suitable coupling, it is possible to reproduce any scaling solution $ρ_X \propto ρ_M a^ξ$, where $a$ is the scale factor of the Robertson-Walker metric and $ξ$ is a constant parameter. $ρ_X$ and $ρ_M$ are the densities of dark energy and dark matter, respectively. Furthermore, we show that an interaction between dark matter and dark energy can drive the transition from an early matter dominated era to a phase of accelerated expansion with a stable, stationary ratio of the energy densities of both components.

Constructing Phantom Cosmologies from Standard Scalar Field Universes

We illustrate how form-invariance transformations can be used for constructing phantom cosmologies from standard scalar field universes. First, we discuss how to relate two flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with different barotropic indexes $γ$ and $\bar γ$. Then, we consider the particular case $\bar γ=-γ$, and we show that if the matter content is interpreted in terms of self-interacting scalar fields, then the corresponding transformation provides the link between a standard and a phantom cosmology. After that, we illustrate the method by considering models with exponential potentials. Finally, we also show that the mentioned duality persists even if the typical braneworld modifications to the Friedmann equation are considered.

Anisotropy and inflation in Bianchi I brane worlds

After a more general assumption on the influence of the bulk on the brane, we extend some conclusions by Maartens et al. and Santos et al. on the asymptotic behavior of Bianchi I brane worlds. As a consequence of the nonlocal anisotropic stresses induced by the bulk, in most of our models, the brane does not isotropize and the nonlocal energy does not vanish in the limit in which the mean radius goes to infinity. We have also found the intriguing possibility that the inflation due to the cosmological constant might be prevented by the interaction with the bulk. We show that the problem for the mean radius can be completely solved in our models, which include as particular cases those in the references above.

Naudts-like duality and the extreme Fisher information principle

We show that using the most parsimonious version of Frieden and Soffer's extreme information principle (EPI) with a Fisher measure constructed with escort probabilities, the concomitant solutions obey a type of Naudts' duality for nonextensive ensembles. We also determine in closed form the general (normalized) probability distribution that minimizes Fisher's information.

Assisted inflation in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi spacetimes

We use exact general solutions for the spatially flat FRW and the anisotropic Bianchi I cosmologies to show that generically uncoupled scalar fields cooperate to make inflation more probable, while the presence of several interacting fields hinders the occurrence of the phenomenon, in accordance with previous results based on particular power-law solutions. Similar conclusions are reached in the case of Bianchi VI$_0$ spacetimes, for power-law solutions which are proved to be attractors.
