Dynamical aspects of Kinouchi-Copelli model: emergence of avalanches at criticality

We analyze the behavior of bursts of neural activity in the Kinouchi-Copelli model, originally conceived to explain information processing issues in sensory systems. We show that, at a critical condition, power-law behavior emerges for the size and duration of the bursts (avalanches), with exponents experimentally observed in real biological systems.

Numerical Simulation of Particle Flow in a Sand Trap

Sand traps are used to measure Aeolian flux. Since they modify the surrounding wind velocity field their gauging represents an important challenge. We use numerical simulations under the assumption of homogeneous turbulence based on FLUENT to systematically study the flow field and trapping efficiency of one of the most common devices based on a hollow cylinder with two slits. In particular, we investigate the dependence on the wind speed, the Stokes number, the permeability of the membrane on the slit and the saltation height.

Parabolic dunes in north-eastern Brazil

In this work we present measurements of vegetation cover over parabolic dunes with different degree of activation along the north-eastern Brazilian coast. We are able to extend the local values of the vegetation cover density to the whole dune by correlating measurements with the gray-scale levels of a high resolution satellite image of the dune field. The empirical vegetation distribution is finally used to validate the results of a recent continuous model of dune motion coupling sand erosion and vegetation growth.

Profile measurement and simulation of a transverse dune field in the Lençóis Maranhenses

In this work, we report measurements of the height profile of transverse dunes in the coastal dune field known as ``Lençóis Maranhenses'', northeastern Brazil. Our measurements show that transverse dunes with approximately the same height present a variable brink position relative to the crest, in contrast to the case of barchan dunes. Based on our field data, we present a relation for the dune spacing as a function of the crest-brink distances of transverse dunes. Furthermore, we compare the measurements with simulations of transverse dunes obtained from a two-dimensional dune model, where a phenomenological definition is introduced for the length of the separation streamlines on the lee side of closely spaced transverse dunes. We find that our model reproduces transverse dune fields with similar inter-dune distances and dune aspect ratios as measured in the field.

Optical bistability in sideband output modes induced by squeezed vacuum

We consider $N$ two-level atoms in a ring cavity interacting with a broadband squeezed vacuum centered at frequency $ω_{s}$ and an input monochromatic driving field at frequency $ω$. We show that, besides the central mode (at $ø$), many other {\em sideband modes} are produced at the output, with frequencies shifted from $ω$ by multiples of $ 2(ω-ω_{s})$. Here we analyze the optical bistability of the two nearest sideband modes, one red-shifted and the other blue-shifted.
