A Cosmic String Specific Signature on the Cosmic Microwave Background

Using an analytical model for the string network we show that the kurtosis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature gradient maps is a good statistic to distinguish between the cosmic string model and inflationary models of structure formation. The difference between the stringy and inflationary value for the kurtosis is inversely proportional to the angular resolution and to the number of strings per Hubble volume of the strings' scaling solution. If strings are indeed responsible for CMB anisotropies then experiments with resolutions of a couple of arcminutes or smaller could determine it using this statistic.

Peculiar Velocities and Microwave Background Anisotropopies from Cosmic Strings

Using an analytic model we show that the predictions of the cosmic string model for the peculiar velocities and the microwave background (MBR) anisotropy depend on similar combinations of string evolution parameters. Normalizing from the COBE detection of MBR anisotropy, and for certain reasonable values of string network evolution parameters, we find that the magnitude of predicted velocity flows is in good agreement with observations on small scales but is inconsistent with observations on large scales ($ > 50 h^{-1}$Mpc). The Cosmic Mach Number obtained from the cosmic string scenario is found to depend on a single network evolution parameter and is consistent with observations on scales $5h^{-1}$Mpc to $20h^{-1}$Mpc.

On the Stability of Electroweak Strings (New Version)

We map the parameter space that leads to stable Z-vortices in the electroweak model. For $sin^2 θ_W = 0.23$, we find that the strings are unstable for a Higgs mass larger than 24 GeV. Given the latest constraints on the Higgs mass from LEP, this shows that, if the standard electroweak model is realized in Nature, the Z-vortex (in the bare model) is unstable.
