Supersymmetry breaking with quasi-localized fields in orbifold field theories

We study the Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking in five-dimensional orbifold theories with five-dimensional fields which are not strictly localized on the boundaries (quasi-localized fields). We show that the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) mechanism, besides the SS parameter ω, depends upon new parameters, e.g. supersymmetric five-dimensional odd mass terms, governing the level of localization on the boundaries of the five-dimensional fields and study in detail such a dependence. Taking into account radiative corrections, the value of ωis dynamically allowed to acquire any value in the range 0< ω< 1/2.

Running and Matching from 5 to 4 Dimensions

We study 5 dimensional grand-unified theories in an orbifold geometry by the method of effective field theory: we match the low and high energy theories by integrating out at 1-loop the massive Kaluza-Klein states. In the supersymmetric case the radius dependence of threshold effects is fixed by the rescaling anomalies of the low energy theory. We focus on a recently proposed SU(5) model on $M^4 \times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2^\prime)$. Even though the spectrum of the heavy modes is completely known, there still are corrections to gauge unification originating from boundary couplings. In order to control these effects one has to rely on extra assumptions. We argue that, as far as gauge couplings are concerned, the predictive power of these models is similar to conventional GUTs.

The Fate of the Radion in Models with Metastable Graviton

We clarify some general issues in models where gravity is localized at intermediate distances. We introduce the radion mode, which is usually neglected, and we point out that its role in the model is crucial. We show that the brane bending effects discussed in the literature can be obtained in a formalism where the physical origin is manifest. The model violates positivity of energy due to a negative tension brane, which induces a negative kinetic term for the radion. The very same effect that violates positivity is responsible for the recovery of conventional Einstein gravity at intermediate distances.

Bosonization at Finite Temperature and Anyon Condensation

An operator formalism for bosonization at finite temperature and density is developed. We treat the general case of anyon statistics. The exact $n$-point correlation functions, satisfying the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition, are explicitly constructed. The invariance under both vector and chiral transformations allows to introduce two chemical potentials. Investigating the exact momentum distribution, we discover anyon condensation in certain range of the statistical parameter. Another interesting feature is the occurrence of a non-vanishing persistent current. As an application of the general formalism, we solve the massless Thirring model at finite temperature, deriving the charge density and the persistent current.

Three-manifold invariants and their relation with the fundamental group

We consider the 3-manifold invariant I(M) which is defined by means of the Chern-Simons quantum field theory and which coincides with the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant. We present some arguments and numerical results supporting the conjecture that, for nonvanishing I(M), the absolute value | I(M) | only depends on the fundamental group π_1 (M) of the manifold M. For lens spaces, the conjecture is proved when the gauge group is SU(2). In the case in which the gauge group is SU(3), we present numerical computations confirming the conjecture.

Effective Lagrangian for Quantum Black Holes

We discuss the most general effective Lagrangian obtained from the assumption that the degrees of freedom to be quantized, in a black hole, are on the horizon. The effective Lagrangian depends only on the induced metric and the extrinsic curvature of the (fluctuating) horizon, and the possible operators can be arranged in an expansion in powers of $\mpl/M$, where $\mpl$ is the Planck mass and $M$ the black hole mass. We perform a semiclassical expansion of the action with a formalism which preserves general covariance explicitly. Quantum fluctuations over the classical solutions are described by a single scalar field living in the 2+1 dimensional world-volume swept by the horizon, with a given coupling to the background geometry. We discuss the resulting field theory and we compute the black hole entropy with our formalism.
