Spin Gap in Optimally-doped YBCO

Spin gap in optimally-doped YBCO was investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. We found that q-integrated spectral weight in the vicinity of the spin gap has a shape of a step function at 10K with sharp resolution-limited onset at 33 meV, i.e. there is no observable spectral weight at 31 meV but full spectral weight at 35 meV. The spin gap does not soften or "fill in" as the temperature is increased to Tc. Above Tc we find no evidence for q-dependent magnetic signal at 35 meV.

Electron-phonon coupling reflecting dynamic charge inhomogeneity in copper-oxide superconductors

The attempt to understand cuprate superconductors is complicated by the presence of multiple strong interactions. While many believe that antiferromagnetism is important for the superconductivity, there has been revived interest in the role of electron-lattice coupling. The recently studied conventional superconductor MgB2 has a very strong electron-lattice coupling, involving a particular vibrational mode (phonon), that was predicted by standard theory and confirmed quantitatively by experiment. Here we present inelastic scattering measurements that show a similarly strong anomaly in the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon in the cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 (with x=0.07, 0.15). This is in contrast to conventional theory, which does not predict such behavior. The anomaly is strongest in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 and La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4, compounds that exhibit spatially modulated charge and magnetic order, often called stripe order. It occurs at a wave vector corresponding to the charge order. These results suggest that this giant electron-phonon anomaly, which is absent in undoped and over-doped non-superconductors, is associated with charge inhomogeneity. It follows that electron-phonon coupling may be important to our understanding of superconductivity, although its contribution to the mechanism is likely to be indirect.

Dispersion of the high-energy phonon modes in Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$

The dispersion of the high-energy phonon modes in the electron doped high-temperature superconductor Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The frequencies of phonon modes with Cu-O bond-stretching character drop abruptly when going from the Brillouin zone center along the [100]-direction; this dispersion is qualitatively similar to observations in the hole-doped cuprates. We also find a softening of the bond-stretching modes along the [110]-direction but which is weaker and exhibits a sinusoidal dispersion. The phonon anomalies are discussed in comparison to hole-doped cuprate superconductors and other metallic perovskites.

Dispersion of Magnetic Excitations in Superconducting Optimally Doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95

Detailed neutron scattering measurements of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95 found that the resonance peak and incommensurate magnetic scattering induced by superconductivity represent the same physical phenomenon: two dispersive branches that converge near 41 meV and the in-plane wave-vector q_af=(pi/a, pi/a) to form the resonance peak. One branch has a circular symmetry around q_af and quadratic downward dispersion from ~41 meV to the spin gap of 33+-1meV. The other, of lower intensity, disperses from ~41 meV to at least 55 meV. Our results exclude a quartet of vertical incommensurate rods in q-w space expected from spin waves produced by dynamical charge stripes as an origin of the observed incommensurate scattering in optimally-doped YBCO.

Oxygen Phonon Branches in YBa2Cu3O7

We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon dispersions in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.95 and compare them with model calculations. The focus is on the in-plane oxygen bond-stretching phonon branches. The study of these modes is complicated by anticrossings with c-axis-polarized branches; such effects are interpreted through lattice-dynamical shell-model calculations. The in-plane anisotropy of the bond-stretching phonons was firmly ascertained from measurements on a detwinned sample. Studying the in-plane modes involving out-of-phase motion for the two Cu-O layers within a unit cell as well as those with in-phase motion was of great help for establishing a clear experimental picture. The measurements confirm that the in-plane oxygen bond-stretching phonon branches disperse steeply downwards from the zone center in both the a and the b directions indicating a strong electron-phonon coupling. For the b-axis-polarized bond-stretching phonons, there is an additional feature of considerable interest: a sharp local frequency minimum was found to develop on cooling from room temperature to T = 10 K at the wave vector q = 0.27 r.l.u..

Evidence for Dynamic Charge Stripes in the Phonons of Optimally Doped YBCO

Inelastic neutron scattering investigations on optimally doped YBCO revealed a very pronounced temperature dependence in the Cu-O in-plane bond-stretching vibrations along the (010) direction: a shift of spectral weight by at least 10 meV has been observed in a narrow range of wave vectors halfway to the zone boundary. The temperature evolution starts at about 200 K, well above the superconducting transition temperature. The displacement pattern of the anomalous phonons indicates a dynamic one-dimensional charge-density modulation within the planes, but excludes a direct contribution from the Cu-O chains.

Oxygen Phonon Branches in Detwinned YBa2Cu3O7

We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon dispersions on a detwinned sample of YBaCu3O7 and compare them with model calculations. Plane oxygen bond stretching phonon branches disperse steeply downwards from the zone center in both the a and the b direction indicating a strong electron-phonon coupling. Half way to the zone boundary, the phonon peaks become ill-defined but we see no need to invoke unit cell doubling or charge stripe formation: lattice dynamical shell model calculations predict such behavior as a result of branch anticrossings. There were no observable superconductivity-related temperature effects on selected plane oxygen bond stretching modes measured on a twinned sample.

Bond-Stretching-Phonon Anomalies in Stripe-Ordered La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4)

We report a neutron scattering study of bond-stretching phonons in La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4), a doped antiferromagnet in which the added holes order in diagonal stripes at 45 deg to the Ni-O bonds. For the highest-energy longitudinal optical mode along the bonds, a softening of 20% is observed between the Brillouin zone center and zone boundary. At 45 deg to the bonds, a splitting of the same magnitude is found across much of the zone. Surprisingly, the charge-ordering wave vector plays no apparent role in the anomalous dispersions. The implications for related anomalies in the cuprates are discussed.
