Multi-Objective System-by-Design for mm-Wave Automotive Radar Antennas

The computationally-efficient solution of multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs) arising in the design of modern electromagnetic (EM) microwave devices is addressed. Towards this end, a novel System-by-Design (SbD) method is developed to effectively explore the solution space and to provide the decision maker with a set of optimal trade-off solutions minimizing multiple and (generally) contrasting objectives. The proposed MO-SbD method proves a high computational efficiency, with a remarkable time saving with respect to a competitive state-of-the-art MOP solution strategy, thanks to the "smart" integration of evolutionary-inspired concepts and operators with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques. Representative numerical results are reported to provide the interested users with useful insights and guidelines on the proposed optimization method as well as to assess its effectiveness in designing mm-wave automotive radar antennas.

Autocorrelation-Driven Synthesis of Antenna Arrays -- The Case of DS-Based Planar Isophoric Thinned Arrays

A new methodology for the design of isophoric thinned arrays with a priori controlled pattern features is introduced. A fully analytical and general (i.e., valid for any lattice and set of weights) relationship between the autocorrelation of the array excitations and the power pattern samples is first derived. Binary 2-D sequences with known autocorrelation properties, namely the difference sets (DSs), are then chosen as a representative benchmark to prove that it is possible to deduce closed-form synthesis formulas that a priori guarantee to fit requirements on the sidelobe level (SLL), the directivity, the half-power beamwidth, and the power pattern in user-defined directions. The selected results from a wide numerical assessment, which also includes full-wave simulations with realistic radiators, are illustrated to validate the reliability and the accuracy of the proposed design equations and the associated performance bounds.

Optimal Excitation Matching Strategy for Sub-Arrayed Phased Linear Arrays Generating Arbitrary-Shaped Beams

The design of phased arrays able to generate arbitrary-shaped beams through a sub-arrayed architecture is addressed here. The synthesis problem is cast in the excitation matching framework, so as to yield clustered phased arrays providing optimal trade-offs between the complexity of the array architecture (i.e., the minimum number of control points at the sub-array level) and the matching of a reference pattern. A synthesis tool based on the k-means algorithm is proposed for jointly optimizing the sub-array configuration and the complex sub-array coefficients. Selected numerical results, including pencil beams with sidelobe notches and asymmetric lobes as well as shaped main lobes, are reported and discussed to highlight the peculiarities of the proposed approach also in comparison with some extensions to complex excitations of state-of-the-art sub-array design methods.
