Gluon Saturation Effects at the Nuclear Surface: Inelastic Cross Section of Proton-Nucleus at Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray domain

Considering the high-energy limit of the QCD gluon distribution inside a nucleus, we calculate the proton-nucleus total inelastic cross section using a simplified dipole model. We show that, if gluon saturation occurs in the nuclear surface region, the total cross section of proton-nucleus collisions increases more rapidly as a function of the incident energy compared to that of a Glauber-type estimate. We discuss the implications of this with respect to recent ultra-high-energy cosmic ray experiments.

Pomeron loop and running coupling effects in high energy QCD evolution

Within the framework of a (1+1)-dimensional model which mimics evolution and scattering in QCD at high energy, we study the influence of the running of the coupling on the high-energy dynamics with Pomeron loops. We find that the particle number fluctuations are strongly suppressed by the running of the coupling, by at least one order of magnitude as compared to the case of a fixed coupling, for all the rapidities that we have investigated, up to Y=200. This reflects the slowing down of the evolution by running coupling effects, in particular, the large rapidity evolution which is required for the formation of the saturation front via diffusion. We conclude that, for all energies of interest, processes like deep inelastic scattering or forward particle production can be reliably studied within the framework of a mean-field approximation (like the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation) which includes running coupling effects.

The role of local and global strangeness neutrality at the inhomogeneous freeze-out in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The decoupling surface in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may not be homogeneous. Rather, inhomogeneities should form when a rapid transition from high to low entropy density occurs. We analyze the hadron "chemistry" from high-energy heavy-ion reactions for the presence of such density inhomogeneities. We show that due to the non-linear dependence of the particle densities on the temperature and baryon-chemical potential such inhomogeneities should be visible even in the integrated, inclusive abundances. We analyze experimental data from Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS and Au+Au collisions at BNL-RHIC to determine the amplitude of inhomogeneities and the role of local and global strangeness neutrality.

Uncertanties in Air-showers from Small-x pQCD Mini-Jets

To investigate uncertainties in air shower simulations caused by the small-x regime, a model including leading-twist hard pQCD plus soft processes was built, which are separated by an energy dependent transverse momentum cut-off. We provide a fit of the cut-off to the total pp cross section for different PDFs using the eikonal formalism and show that for modern PDF sets there is only a small uncertainty in the mini-jet cross section, and hence in the final-state multiplicity and the number of produced muons.

Inhomogeneous freeze-out in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

A QCD phase transition may reflect in a inhomogeneous decoupling surface of hadrons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that due to the non-linear dependence of the particle densities on the temperature and baryon-chemical potential such inhomogeneities should be visible even in the integrated, inclusive abundances. We analyze experimental data from Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS and Au+Au collisions at BNL-RHIC to determine the amplitude of inhomogeneities.

Inhomogeneous freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions

Relative hadron abundances from high-energy heavy-ion collisions reveal substantial inhomogeneities of temperature and baryon-chemical potential within the decoupling volume. The freeze-out volume is not perfectly "stirred", i.e. the concentrations of pions, kaons, (anti-) nucleons etc are inhomogeneous. Such inhomogeneities in the late stages of the hydrodynamic expansion might be traces of a first-order phase transition.
