Linearized Gravity in Brane Backgrounds

A treatment of linearized gravity is given in the Randall-Sundrum background. The graviton propagator is found in terms of the scalar propagator, for which an explicit integral expression is provided. This reduces to the four-dimensional propagator at long distances along the brane, and provides estimates of subleading corrections. Asymptotics of the propagator off the brane yields exponential falloff of gravitational fields due to matter on the brane. This implies that black holes bound to the brane have a "pancake"-like shape in the extra dimension, and indicates validity of a perturbative treatment off the brane. Some connections with the AdS/CFT correspondence are described.

Brane Boxes: Bending and Beta Functions

We study the type IIB brane box configurations recently introduced by Hanany and Zaffaroni. We show that even at finite string coupling, one can construct smooth configurations of branes with fairly arbitrary gauge and flavor structure. Limiting our attention to the better understood case where NS-branes do not intersect over a four dimensional surface gives some restrictions on the theories, but still permits many examples, both anomalous and non-anomalous. We give several explicit examples of such configurations and discuss what constraints can be imposed on brane-box theories from bending considerations. We also discuss the relation between brane bending and beta-functions for brane-box configurations.

Implication of Exact SUSY Gauge Couplings for QCD

The phase structure of SUSY gauge theories can be very different from their nonsupersymmetric counterparts. Nonetheless, there is interesting information which might be gleaned from detailed investigation of these theories. In particular, we study the precise meaning of the strong interaction scale $Λ$. We ask whether one can meaningfully apply naive dimensional analysis and also ask whether the study of supersymmetric theories can shed light on the apparent discrepancy between the perturbative scale $Λ_{QCD}$ and the ``chiral lagrangian'' scale $Λ_χ$. We show that in N=1 supersymmetric Yang Mills theory, ``naive dimensional analysis'' seems to work well, with $Λ_χ$ consistently equal to the scale at which the perturbatively evolved physical coupling becomes of order $4 π$. We turn to N=2 theories to understand better the effect of instantons in accounting for the QCD discrepancy between scales. In N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) the instanton corrections are known to all orders from the Seiberg-Witten solution and give rise to a finite scale ratio between the scale at which the perturbatively evolved and ``nonperturbatively evolved'' couplings blow up. Correspondingly, instanton effects are important even when the associated perturbatively evolved gauge coupling only gives $α$ of order 1 (rather than $4 π$). We compare the N=2 result to instanton-induced corrections in QCD, evaluated using lattice data and the instanton liquid model, and find a remarkably similar behavior.

The Coulomb Branch of N=2 Supersymmetric Product Group Theories from Branes

We determine the low energy description of N=2 supersymmetric SU(k) product group theories with bifundamental and fundamental matter based on M-theory fivebrane configurations. The dependence on moduli and scales of the coefficients in the non-hyperelliptic Seiberg-Witten curves for these theories is determined by considering various field theory and brane limits. A peculiarity in the interpretation of these curves for the vanishing beta-function case is noted.

Supersymmetric Partners of Oblique Corrections

We discuss a potential new probe of supersymmetric physics. In particular, we discuss the possibility of measuring hard supersymmetry violation which occurs at one loop through "super-oblique" corrections to the gauge and gaugino propagators. In models with heavy scalar partners, or with many gauge-charged particles which participate in supersymmetry breaking, these effects can be substantial due to logarithmic and multiplicity factor enhancements.

Using Heavy Quark Fragmentation into Heavy Hadrons to Determine QCD Parameters and Test Heavy Quark Symmetry

We present a detailed analysis of the use of heavy quark fragmentation into heavy hadrons for testing the heavy quark effective theory through comparison of the measured fragmentation parameters of the $c$ and $b$ quarks. Our analysis is entirely model independent. We interpret the known perturbative evolution in a way useful for exploiting heavy quark symmetry at low energy. We first show consistency with perturbative QCD scaling for measurements done solely with $c$ quarks. We then apply the perturbative analysis and the heavy quark expansion to relate measurements from ARGUS and LEP. We place bounds on a nonperturbative quark mass suppressed parameter, and compare the values for the $b$ and $c$ quarks. We find consistency with the heavy quark expansion but fairly sizable QCD uncertainties. We also suggest that one might reduce the systematic uncertainty in the result by not extrapolating to low $z$.

Optimized Variables of the Study of $Λ_b$ Polarization

The value of the $b$-baryon polarization can be extracted from inclusive data at LEP with better than 10\% precision based on current statistics. We present a new variable by which to measure the polarization, which is the ratio of the average electron energy to the average neutrino energy. This variable is both sensitive to polarization and insensitive to fragmentation uncertainties.

Heavy Quark Fragmentation into Heavy Mesons

We present a QCD based interpretation of heavy quark fragmentation which utilizes the heavy quark mass expansion. By distinguishing between perturbative and non-perturbative QCD effects, we show how to reliably extract mass independent parameters characterizing the fragmentation function. Because these parameters are quark mass independent, this procedure should permit tests of heavy quark symmetry. Furthermore, we show that heavy quark mass corrections vanish at order $m^2/Q^2$ in QCD. There also exist higher twist corrections of order $Λm/Q^2$ and ${α_{QCD}\overπ} {m^2\over Q^2} \ln (Q^2/m^2)$ which we relate to the leading twist fragmentation function.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for $B \rightarrow D^*$ and $B \rightarrow D$ Semileptonic Transition Matrix Elements at Zero Recoil

Heavy quark symmetry predicts the value of $B \rightarrow D$ and $B \rightarrow D^*$ transition matrix elements of the current $\bar c γ_μ(1 - γ_5)b$, at zero recoil (where in the rest frame of the $B$ the $D$ or $D^*$ is also at rest). We use chiral perturbation theory to compute the leading corrections to these predictions which are generated at low momentum, below the chiral symmetry breaking scale.

Testing ETC Generation of the Top Quark Mass

We consider constraints on models in which a top quark mass is generated through unenhanced extended technicolor interactions. The deviation in the $ρ$ parameter from unity and $B$--$\overline{B}$ mixing could be large, but given the uncertainties in strong dynamics and variations in the parameters of models, no conclusive statement can be given. We conclude that the low technicolor scale which is required to generate the top quark mass is not ruled out.

ETC With a GIM Mechanism

We construct an extended technicolor model of quarks and leptons which preserves a GIM mechanism. Furthermore, there is only a minimal technicolor sector, in accordance with recent precision measurements of electroweak parameters. We also show how to incorporate custodial SU(2) and massless neutrinos into such a model.
