Supergravities and Branes from Hilbert-Poincaré Series

The Molien-Weyl integral formula and the Hilbert-Poincaré series have proven to be powerful mathematical tools in relation to gauge theories, allowing to count the number of gauge invariant operators. In this paper, we show that these methods can also be employed to construct Free Differential Algebras and, therefore, reproduce the associated pure supergravity spectrum and nonperturbative objects. Indeed, given a set of fields, the Hilbert-Poincaré series allows to compute all possible invariants and consequently derive the cohomology structure.

M5-brane in the superspace approach

Motivated by Sen's spacetime prescription for the construction of theories with self-dual field strengths, we present a rigid superspace Lagrangian describing noninteracting tensor multiplets living on a stack of M5-branes and containing all the physical constraints on the fields, yielding the on-shell matching of the degrees of freedom. The geometric superspace approach adopted here offers a natural realization of superdiffeomorphisms and is particularly well suited for the coupling to supergravity. However, within this formulation the (anti-)self-duality property of the 3-form field strengths is lost when the superspace Lagrangian is trivially restricted to spacetime. We propose two main paths to address this issue: a first-order superspace extension of Sen's spacetime results, which, once trivially restricted to spacetime, yields all the dynamical equations including the (anti-)self-duality constraint on the 3-form field strengths, and a possible way to obtain a full superspace description of the theory, based on integral forms.

Metric-Affine Myrzakulov Gravity Theories

In this paper we review the Myrzakulov Gravity models (MG-N, with $\mathrm{N = I, II, \ldots, VIII}$) and derive their respective metric-affine generalizations (MAMG-N), discussing also their particular sub-cases. The field equations of the theories are obtained by regarding the metric tensor and the general affine connection as independent variables. We then focus on the case in which the function characterizing the aforementioned metric-affine models is linear and consider a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background to study cosmological aspects and applications.

Twisting D(2,1; α) Superspace

We develop a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory of rigid supersymmetry describing the dynamics of a set of hypermultiplets $(Λ^{αα'\dotα'}_I,\,ϕ^{αA}_I)$ on a curved AdS$_3$ worldvolume background, whose supersymmetry is captured by the supergroup ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$. To unveil some remarkable features of this model, we perform two twists, involving the SL$(2,\mathbb R)$ factors of the theory. After the first twist, our spacetime Lagrangian exhibits a Chern-Simons term associated with an odd one-form field, together with a fermionic "gauge-fixing'', in the spirit of the Rozansky-Witten model. The second twist allows to interpret the ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$ setup as a framework capable of describing massive Dirac particles. In particular, this yields a generalisation of the Alvarez-Valenzuela-Zanelli model of ''unconventional supersymmetry''. We comment on specific values of the combination $α+1$, which in our model is related to a sort of gauging in the absence of dynamical gauge fields.

$\mathcal N=2$ AdS$_4$ supergravity, holography and Ward identities

We develop in detail the holographic framework for an $\mathcal{N}=2$ pure AdS supergravity model in four dimensions, including all the contributions from the fermionic fields and adopting the Fefferman-Graham parametrization. We work in the first order formalism, where the full superconformal structure can be kept manifest in principle, even if only a part of it is realized as a symmetry on the boundary, while the remainder has a non-linear realization. Our study generalizes the results presented in antecedent literature and includes a general discussion of the gauge-fixing conditions on the bulk fields which yield the asymptotic symmetries at the boundary. We construct the corresponding superconformal currents and show that they satisfy the related Ward identities when the bulk equations of motion are imposed. Consistency of the holographic setup requires the super-AdS curvatures to vanish at the boundary. This determines, in particular, the expression of the super-Schouten tensor of the boundary theory, which generalizes the purely bosonic Schouten tensor of standard gravity by including gravitini bilinears. The same applies to the superpartner of the super-Schouten tensor, the conformino. Furthermore, the vanishing of the supertorsion poses general constraints on the sources of the three-dimensional boundary conformal field theory and requires that the super-Schouten tensor is endowed with an antisymmetric part proportional to a gravitino-squared term.

Generalized AdS-Lorentz deformed supergravity on a manifold with boundary

The purpose of this paper is to explore the supersymmetry invariance of a particular supergravity theory, which we refer to as D=4 generalized AdS-Lorentz deformed supergravity, in the presence of a non-trivial boundary. In particular, we show that the so-called generalized minimal AdS-Lorentz superalgebra can be interpreted as a peculiar torsion deformation of osp(4|1), and we present the construction of a bulk Lagrangian based on the aforementioned generalized AdS-Lorentz superalgebra. In the presence of a non-trivial boundary of space-time, that is when the boundary is not thought of as set at infinity, the fields do not asymptotically vanish, and this has some consequences on the invariances of the theory, in particular on supersymmetry invariance. In this work, we adopt the so-called rheonomic (geometric) approach in superspace and show that a supersymmetric extension of a Gauss-Bonnet like term is required in order to restore the supersymmetry invariance of the theory. The action we end up with can be recast as a MacDowell-Mansouri type action, namely as a sum of quadratic terms in the generalized AdS-Lorentz covariant super field-strengths.

Hidden Role of Maxwell Superalgebras in the Free Differential Algebras of D=4 and D=11 Supergravity

The purpose of this paper is to show that the so-called Maxwell superalgebra in four dimensions, which naturally involves the presence of a nilpotent fermionic generator, can be interpreted as a hidden superalgebra underlying N = 1, D=4 supergravity extended to include a 2-form gauge potential associated to a 2-index antisymmetric tensor. In this scenario, the theory is appropriately discussed in the context of Free Differential Algebras (an extension of the Maurer-Cartan equations to involve higher-degree differential forms). The study is then extended to the Free Differential Algebra describing D=11 supergravity, showing that, also in this case, there exists a super-Maxwell algebra underlying the theory. The same extra spinors dual to the nilpotent fermionic generators whose presence is crucial for writing a supersymmetric extension of the Maxwell algebras, both in the D=4 and in the D=11 case, turn out to be fundamental ingredients also to reproduce the D=4 and D=11 Free Differential Algebras on ordinary superspace, whose basis is given by the supervielbein. The analysis of the gauge structure of the supersymmetric Free Differential Algebras is carried on taking into account the gauge transformations from the hidden supergroup-manifold associated with the Maxwell superalgebras.

Group Theoretical Hidden Structure of Supergravity Theories in Higher Dimensions

The purpose of my PhD thesis is to investigate different group theoretical and geometrical aspects of supergravity theories. To this aim, several research topics are explored: On one side, the construction of supergravity models in diverse space-time dimensions, including the study of boundary contributions, and the disclosure of the hidden gauge structure of these theories; on the other side, the analysis of the algebraic links among different superalgebras related to supergravity theories. In the first three chapters, we give a general introduction and furnish the theoretical background necessary for a clearer understanding of the thesis. We then move to the original results of my PhD research activity: We start from the development of the so called $AdS$-Lorentz supergravity in $D=4$ by adopting the so called rheonomic approach and discuss on boundary contributions to the theory. Subsequently, we focus on the analysis of the hidden gauge structure of supersymmetric Free Differential Algebras. More precisely, we concentrate on the hidden superalgebras underlying $D=11$ and $D=7$ supergravities, exploring the symmetries hidden in the theories and the physical role of the nilpotent fermionic generators naturally appearing in the aforementioned superalgebras. After that, we move to the pure algebraic and group theoretical description of (super)algebras, focusing on new analytic formulations of the so called $S$-expansion method. The final chapter contains the summary of the results of my doctoral studies presented in the thesis and possible future developments. In the Appendices, we collect notation, useful formulas, and detailed calculations.

Infinite S-Expansion with Ideal Subtraction and Some Applications

According to the literature, the S-expansion procedure involving a finite semigroup is valid no matter what the structure of the original Lie (super)algebra is; However, when something about the structure of the starting (super)algebra is known and when certain particular conditions are met, the S-expansion method (with its features of resonance and reduction) is able not only to lead to several kinds of expanded (super)algebras, but also to reproduce the effects of the standard as well as the generalized Inönü-Wigner contraction. In the present paper, we propose a new prescription for S-expansion, involving an infinite abelian semigroup $S^{(\infty)}$ and the subtraction of an infinite ideal subalgebra. We show that the subtraction of the infinite ideal subalgebra corresponds to a reduction. Our approach is a generalization of the finite S-expansion procedure presented in the literature, and it offers an alternative view of the generalized Inönü-Wigner contraction. We then show how to write the invariant tensors of the target (super)algebras in terms of those of the starting ones in the infinite S-expansion context presented in this work. We also give some interesting examples of application on algebras and superalgebras.

On the Hidden Maxwell Superalgebra underlying D=4 Supergravity

In this work, we expand the hidden $AdS$-Lorentz superalgebra underlying $D=4$ supergravity, reaching a (hidden) Maxwell superalgebra. The latter can be viewed as an extension involving cosmological constant of the superalgebra underlying $D=4$ supergravity in flat spacetime. We write the Maurer-Cartan equations in this context and we find some interesting extensions of the antisymmetric $3$-form $A^{(3)}$ appearing in the Free Differential Algebra in Minkowski space. The structure of Free Differential Algebras is obtained by considering the zero curvature equations. We write the parametrization of $A^{(3)}$ in terms of $1$-forms and we rend the topological features of its extensions manifest. We interestingly find out that the structure of these extensions, and consequently the structure of the corresponding boundary contribution $dA^{(3)}$, strongly depends on the form of the extra fermionic generator appearing in the hidden Maxwell superalgebra. The model we develop in this work is defined in an enlarged superspace with respect to the ordinary one, and the extra bosonic and fermionic $1$-forms required for the closure of the hidden Maxwell superalgebra must be considered as physical fields in this enlarged superspace.

More on the Hidden Symmetries of 11D Supergravity

In this paper we clarify the relations occurring among the osp(1|32) algebra, the M-algebra and the hidden superalgebra underlying the Free Differential Algebra of D=11 supergravity (to which we will refer as DF-algebra) that was introduced in the literature by D'Auria and Fré in 1981 and is actually a (Lorentz valued) central extension of the M-algebra including a nilpotent spinor generator, Q'. We focus in particular on the 4-form cohomology in 11D superspace of the supergravity theory, strictly related to the presence in the theory of a 3-form $A^{(3)}$. Once formulated in terms of its hidden superalgebra of 1-forms, we find that $A^{(3)}$ can be decomposed into the sum of two parts having different group-theoretical meaning: One of them allows to reproduce the FDA of the 11D Supergravity due to non-trivial contributions to the 4-form cohomology in superspace, while the second one does not contribute to the 4-form cohomology, being a closed 3-form in the vacuum, defining however a one parameter family of trilinear forms invariant under a symmetry algebra related to osp(1|32) by redefining the spin connection and adding a new Maurer-Cartan equation. We further discuss about the crucial role played by the 1-form spinor $η$ (dual to the nilpotent generator Q') for the 4-form cohomology of the eleven dimensional theory on superspace.

An Analytic Method for $S$-Expansion involving Resonance and Reduction

In this paper we describe an analytic method able to give the multiplication table(s) of the set(s) involved in an $S$-expansion process (with either resonance or $0_S$-resonant-reduction) for reaching a target Lie (super)algebra from a starting one, after having properly chosen the partitions over subspaces of the considered (super)algebras. This analytic method gives us a simple set of expressions to find the partitions over the set(s) involved in the process. Then, we use the information coming from both the initial (super)algebra and the target one for reaching the multiplication table(s) of the mentioned set(s). Finally, we check associativity with an auxiliary computational algorithm, in order to understand whether the obtained set(s) can describe semigroup(s) or just abelian set(s) connecting two (super)algebras. We also give some interesting examples of application, which check and corroborate our analytic procedure and also generalize some result already presented in the literature.

On the Supersymmetric Extension of Gauss-Bonnet like Gravity

We explore the supersymmetry invariance of a supergravity theory in the presence of a non-trivial boundary. The explicit construction of a bulk Lagrangian based on an enlarged superalgebra, known as $AdS$-Lorentz, is presented. Using a geometric approach we show that the supersymmetric extension of a Gauss-Bonnet like gravity is required in order to restore the supersymmetry invariance of the theory.

Hidden Gauge Structure of Supersymmetric Free Differential Algebras

The aim of this paper is to clarify the role of the nilpotent fermionic generator Q' introduced in Ref. [3] and appearing in the hidden supergroup underlying the free differential algebra (FDA) of D=11 supergravity. We give a physical explanation of its role by looking at the gauge properties of the theory. We find that its presence is necessary, in order that the extra 1-forms of the hidden supergroup give rise to the correct gauge transformations of the p-forms of the FDA. This interpretation is actually valid for any supergravity containing antisymmetric tensor fields, and any supersymmetric FDA can always be traded for a hidden Lie superalgebra containing extra fermionic nilpotent generators. As an interesting example we construct the hidden superalgebra associated with the FDA of N=2, D=7 supergravity. In this case we are able to parametrize the mutually non local 2- and 3-form B^(2) and B^(3) in terms of hidden 1-forms and find that supersymmetry and gauge invariance require in general the presence of two nilpotent fermionic generators in the hidden algebra. We propose that our approach, where all the invariances of the FDA are expressed as Lie derivatives of the $p$-forms in the hidden supergroup manifold, could be an appropriate framework to discuss theories defined in enlarged versions of superspace recently considered in the literature, such us double field theory and its generalizations.

Minimal $D=7$ Supergravity and the supersymmetry of Arnold-Beltrami Flux branes

In this paper we study some properties of the newly found Arnold-Beltrami flux-brane solutions to the minimal $D=7$ supergravity. To this end we first single out the appropriate Free Differential Algebra containing both a gauge $3$-form $\mathbf{B}^{[3]}$ and a gauge $2$-form $\mathbf{B}^{[2]}$: then we present the complete rheonomic parametrization of all the generalized curvatures. This allows us to identify two-brane configurations with Arnold-Beltrami fluxes in the transverse space with exact solutions of supergravity and to analyze the Killing spinor equation in their background. We find that there is no preserved supersymmetry if there are no additional translational Killing vectors. Guided by this principle we explicitly construct Arnold-Beltrami flux two-branes that preserve $0$, $1/8$ and $1/4$ of the original supersymmetry. Two-branes without fluxes are instead BPS states and preserve $1/2$ supersymmetry. For each two-brane solution we carefully study its discrete symmetry that is always given by some appropriate crystallographic group $Γ$. Such symmetry groups $Γ$ are transmitted to the $D=3$ gauge theories on the brane world--volume that occur in the gauge/gravity correspondence. Furthermore we illustrate the intriguing relation between gauge fluxes in two-brane solutions and hyperinstantons in $D=4$ topological sigma-models.

The SIRIUS Mixed analog-digital ASIC developed for the LOFT LAD and WFM instruments

We report on the development and characterization of the low-noise, low power, mixed analog-digital SIRIUS ASICs for both the LAD and WFM X-ray instruments of LOFT. The ASICs we developed are reading out large area silicon drift detectors (SDD). Stringent requirements in terms of noise (ENC of 17 e- to achieve an energy resolution on the LAD of 200 eV FWHM at 6 keV) and power consumption (650 μW per channel) were basis for the ASICs design. These SIRIUS ASICs are developed to match SDD detectors characteristics: 16 channels ASICs adapted for the LAD (970 microns pitch) and 64 channels for the WFM (145 microns pitch) will be fabricated. The ASICs were developed with the 180nm mixed technology of TSMC.

The Hot and Energetic Universe: The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) for Athena+

The Athena+ mission concept is designed to implement the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme submitted to the European Space Agency in response to the call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 missions of its science program. The Athena+ science payload consists of a large aperture high angular resolution X-ray optics and twelve meters away, two interchangeable focal plane instruments: the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) and the Wide Field Imager (WFI). The X-IFU is a cryogenic X-ray spectrometer, based on a large array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), offering 2.5 eV spectral resolution, with ~5" pixels, over a field of view of 5 arc minutes in diameter. In this paper, we briefly describe the Athena+ mission concept and the X-IFU performance requirements. We then present the X-IFU detector and readout electronics principles, the current design of the focal plane assembly, the cooling chain and review the global architecture design. Finally, we describe the current performance estimates, in terms of effective area, particle background rejection, count rate capability and velocity measurements. Finally, we emphasize on the latest technology developments concerning TES array fabrication, spectral resolution and readout performance achieved to show that significant progresses are being accomplished towards the demanding X-IFU requirements.

First detection of ND in the solar-mass protostar IRAS16293-2422

In the past decade, much progress has been made in characterising the processes leading to the enhanced deuterium fractionation observed in the ISM and in particular in the cold, dense parts of star forming regions such as protostellar envelopes. Very high molecular D/H ratios have been found for saturated molecules and ions. However, little is known about the deuterium fractionation in radicals, even though simple radicals often represent an intermediate stage in the formation of more complex, saturated molecules. The imidogen radical NH is such an intermediate species for the ammonia synthesis in the gas phase. Herschel/HIFI represents a unique opportunity to study the deuteration and formation mechanisms of such species, which are not observable from the ground. We searched here for the deuterated radical ND in order to determine the deuterium fractionation of imidogen and constrain the deuteration mechanism of this species. We observed the solar-mass Class 0 protostar IRAS16293-2422 with the heterodyne instrument HIFI as part of the Herschel key programme CHESS (Chemical HErschel Surveys of Star forming regions). The deuterated form of the imidogen radical ND was detected and securely identified with 2 hyperfine component groups of its fundamental transition in absorption against the continuum background emitted from the nascent protostar. The 3 groups of hyperfine components of its hydrogenated counterpart NH were also detected in absorption. We derive a very high deuterium fractionation with an [ND]/[NH] ratio of between 30 and 100%. The deuterium fractionation of imidogen is of the same order of magnitude as that in other molecules, which suggests that an efficient deuterium fractionation mechanism is at play. We discuss two possible formation pathways for ND, by means of either the reaction of N+ with HD, or deuteron/proton exchange with NH.
