Pressure-induced structural dimerization in the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ at low temperatures

A pressure-induced collapse of magnetic ordering in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ at $P_m\sim1.5- 2$ GPa has previously been interpreted as evidence for possible emergence of spin liquid states in this hyperhoneycomb iridate, raising prospects for experimental realizations of the Kitaev model. Based on structural data obtained at \emph{room temperature}, this magnetic transition is believed to originate in small lattice perturbations that preserve crystal symmetry, and related changes in bond-directional anisotropic exchange interactions. Here we report on the evolution of the crystal structure of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under pressure at low temperatures ($T\leq50$ K) and show that the suppression of magnetism coincides with a change in lattice symmetry involving Ir-Ir dimerization. The critical pressure for dimerization shifts from 4.4(2) GPa at room temperature to $\sim1.5-2$ GPa below 50 K. While a direct $Fddd \rightarrow C2/c$ transition is observed at room temperature, the low temperature transitions involve new as well as coexisting dimerized phases. Further investigation of the Ir ($L_3$/$L_2$) isotropic branching ratio in x-ray absorption spectra indicates that the previously reported departure of the electronic ground state from a $J_{\rm{eff}}=1/2$ state is closely related to the onset of dimerized phases. In essence, our results suggest that the predominant mechanism driving the collapse of magnetism in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is the pressure-induced formation of Ir$_2$ dimers in the hyperhoneycomb network. The results further confirm the instability of the $J_{\rm{eff}}=1/2$ moments and related non-collinear spiral magnetic ordering against formation of dimers in the low-temperature phase of compressed $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$.

Tuning of the Ru$^{\mathbf{4+}}$ ground-state orbital population in the $\mathbf{4d^4}$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ achieved by La doping

The ground-state orbital occupancy of the Ru$^{4+}$ ion in Ca$_{2-x}$La$_x$RuO$_4$ [x=0, 0.05(1), 0.07(1) and 0.12(1)] was investigated by performing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the vicinity of the O K edge as a function of angle between the incident beam and the surface of the crystals. A minimal model of the hybridization between the O 2p states probed at the K edge and the Ru 4d orbitals was used to analyze the XAS data, allowing the ratio of hole occupancies $n_{xy}/n_{yz,zx}$ to be determined as a function of doping and temperature. For the samples displaying a low-temperature insulating ground-state ($x\leq0.07$), $n_{xy}/n_{yz,zx}$ is found to increase significantly with increasing doping. For x=0.12, which has a metallic ground-state, the XAS spectra are found to be independent of temperature, and not to be describable by the minimal hybridization model. To understand the origin of the evolution of the electronic structure across the phase diagram, we have performed theoretical calculations based on a model Hamiltonian, comprising electron-electron correlations, crystal field ($Δ$) and spin-orbit coupling ($λ$), of a Ru-O-Ru cluster. Our calculations of the Ru hole occupancy as a function of $Δ/λ$ establish that the enhancement of $n_{xy}/n_{yz,zx}$ is driven by significant changes to the crystal field as the tetragonal distortion of the RuO$_6$ octahedral changes from compressive to tensile with La doping. It also shows that the hole occupancy of the O 2p and Ru 4d orbitals display the same trend as a function of $Δ/λ$, thus validating the minimal hybridization model. In essence, our results suggest that the predominant mechanism driving the emergence of the low-temperature metallic phase in La doped Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ is the structurally induced redistribution of holes within the t2g orbitals, rather that the injection of free carriers.

Pressure effects on the structural and superconducting transitions in La3Co4Sn13

La3Co4Sn13 is a superconducting material with transition temperature at Tc = 2.70 K, which presents a superlattice structural transition at T* ~ 150 K, a common feature for this class of compounds. However, for this material, it is not clear that at T* the lattice distortions arise from a charge density wave (CDW) or from a distinct microscopic origin. Interestingly, it has been suggested in isostructural non-magnetic intermetallic compounds that T* can be suppressed to zero temperature, by combining chemical and external pressure, and a quantum critical point is argued to be observed near these critical doping/pressure. Our study shows that application of pressure on single-crystalline La3Co4Sn13 enhances Tc and decreases T*. We observe thermal hysteresis loops for cooling/heating cycles around T* for P > 0.6 GPa, in electrical resistivity measurements, which are not seen in x-ray diffraction data. The hysteresis in electrical measurements may be due to the pinning of the CDW phase to impurities/defects, while the superlattice structural transition maintains its ambient pressure second-order transition nature under pressure. From our experiments we estimate that T* vanishes at around 5.5 GPa, though no quantum critical behavior is observed up to 2.53 GPa.

Coupling of magnetic order and charge transport in the candidate Dirac semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$

We use resonant elastic x-ray scattering to determine the evolution of magnetic order in EuCd$_2$As$_2$ below $T_\textrm{N}=9.5$\,K, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. We find an A-type antiferromagneticstructure with in-plane magnetic moments, and observe dramatic magnetoresistive effects associated with field-induced changes in the magnetic structure and domain populations. Our \textit{ab initio} electronic structure calculations indicate that the Dirac dispersion found in the nonmagnetic Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ is also present in EuCd$_2$As$_2$, but is gapped for $T < T_\textrm{N}$ due to the breaking of $C_3$ symmetry by the magnetic structure.

Persistence of antiferromagnetic order upon La substitution in the $4d^4$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$

The chemical and magnetic structures of the series of compounds Ca$_{2-x}$La$_x$RuO$_4$ [$x = 0$, $0.05(1)$, $0.07(1)$, $0.12(1)$] have been investigated using neutron diffraction and resonant elastic x-ray scattering. Upon La doping, the low temperature S-Pbca space group of the parent compound is retained in all insulating samples [$x\leq0.07(1)$], but with significant changes to the atomic positions within the unit cell. These changes can be characterised in terms of the local RuO$_6$ octahedral coordination: with increasing doping the structure, crudely speaking, evolves from an orthorhombic unit cell with compressed octahedra to a quasi-tetragonal unit cell with elongated ones. The magnetic structure on the other hand, is found to be robust, with the basic $k=(0,0,0)$, $b$-axis antiferromagnetic order of the parent compound preserved below the critical La doping concentration of $x\approx0.11$. The only effects of La doping on the magnetic structure are to suppress the A-centred mode, favouring the B mode instead, and to reduce the Néel temperature somewhat. Our results are discussed with reference to previous experimental reports on the effects of cation substitution on the $d^4$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, as well as with regard to theoretical studies on the evolution of its electronic and magnetic structure. In particular, our results rule out the presence of a proposed ferromagnetic phase, and suggest that the structural effects associated with La substitution play an important role in the physics of the system.

Pressure-tuning of bond-directional exchange interactions and magnetic frustration in hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$

We explore the response of Ir $5d$ orbitals to pressure in $β$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$, a hyperhoneycomb iridate in proximity to a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a reconstruction of the electronic ground state below 2 GPa, the same pressure range where x-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows an apparent collapse of magnetic order. The electronic reconstruction, which manifests a reduction in the effective spin-orbit (SO) interaction in $5d$ orbitals, pushes $β$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$ further away from the pure $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ limit. Although lattice symmetry is preserved across the electronic transition, x-ray diffraction shows a highly anisotropic compression of the hyperhoneycomb lattice which affects the balance of bond-directional Ir-Ir exchange interactions driven by spin-orbit coupling at Ir sites. An enhancement of symmetric anisotropic exchange over Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions seen in theoretical calculations that use precisely this anisotropic Ir-Ir bond compression provides one possible route to realization of a QSL state in this hyperhoneycomb iridate at high pressures.

Probing 5f electronic hybridization in Uranium compounds via x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We study the spin-dependent electronic structure of UTe and UT_{2}Si_{2} (T=Cu and Mn) compounds with a combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements and first principle calculations. By exploiting the presence of sizable quadrupolar and dipolar contributions to the U L_{2,3}-edge x-ray absorption cross section we are able to provide unique information on the extent of hybridization between 5f and 6d/3d electronic states, a key parameter regulating the physical properties of all actinide materials. Since this information is hardly accessible to other probes, the new methodology opens up new venues for investigating this important class of materials.

Pressure-induced collapsed-tetragonal phase in SrCo2As2

We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p = 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1 GPa, and electrical resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on SrCo2As2. Our x-ray diffraction data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal (T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6 GPa at T = 7 K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature independent. The compressibility along the a-axis is the same for the T and cT phases whereas, along the c-axis, the cT phase is significantly stiffer, which may be due to the formation of an As-As bond in the cT phase. Our resistivity measurements found no evidence of superconductivity in SrCo2As2 for p <= 5.9 GPa and T >= 1.8 K. The resistivity data also show signatures consistent with a pressure-induced phase transition for p >= 5.5 GPa. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements performed up to 1.1 GPa in the T phase found no evidence of stripe-type or A-type antiferromagnetic ordering down to 10 K. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations demonstrate that the cT phase is the stable phase at high pressure with a c/a ratio of 2.54. Furthermore, these calculations indicate that the cT phase of SrCo2As2 should manifest either A-type antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order.

Magnetic properties of Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co) investigated by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy

We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$ = Fe and Co) compounds using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRMS measurements reveal that the GdCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound has a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure with a magnetic propagation vector $\vecτ$ = $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ below the Néel temperature ($T_N \sim$ 5.7 K). Only the Gd ions carry a magnetic moment forming an antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic representation $Γ_6$. For the ferromagnetic GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound, an extensive investigation was performed at low temperature and under magnetic field using XANES and XMCD techniques. A strong XMCD signal of about 12.5 $\%$ and 9.7 $\%$ is observed below the Curie temperature ($T_C \sim$ 85 K) at the Gd-$L_2$ and $L_3$ edges, respectively. In addition, a small magnetic signal of about 0.06 $\%$ of the jump is recorded at the Zn $K$-edge suggesting that the Zn 4$p$ states are spin polarized by the Gd 5$d$ extended orbitals.

Fragility of ferromagnetic double exchange interactions and pressure tuning of magnetism in 3d-5d double perovskite Sr2FeOsO6

The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in double perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic order. We analyze the relevant electron-electron interactions, shedding light into fundamental differences with the more thoroughly studied 3d-3d systems.

Electronic and structural ground state of heavy alkali metals at high pressure

Alkali metals display unexpected properties at high pressure, including emergence of low symmetry crystal structures, that appear to occur due to enhanced electronic correlations among the otherwise nearly-free conduction electrons. We investigate the high pressure electronic and structural ground state of K, Rb, and Cs using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements together with ab initio theoretical calculations. The sequence of phase transitions under pressure observed at low temperature is similar in all three heavy alkalis except for the absence of the oC84 phase in Cs. Both the experimental and theoretical results point to pressure-enhanced localization of the valence electrons characterized by pseudo-gap formation near the Fermi level and strong spd hybridization. Although the crystal structures predicted to host magnetic order in K are not observed, the localization process appears to drive these alkalis closer to a strongly correlated electron state.

Pressure induced amorphization and collapse of magnetic order in type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30

We investigate the low temperature structural and electronic properties of the type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 under pressure using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRD measurements reveal a transition to an amorphous phase above 18 GPa. Unlike previous reports on other clathrate compounds, no volume-collapse is observed prior to the crystalline-amorphous phase transition which takes place when the unit cell volume is reduced to 81% of its ambient pressure value. Fits of the pressure-dependent relative volume to a Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) yield a bulk modulus B0 = 65+-3 GPa and a pressure derivative B'0 = 3.3+-0.5. The Eu L2-edge XMCD data shows quenching of the magnetic order at the crystalline-amorphous phase transition. The XANES spectra indicate the persistence of Eu2+ valency state up to 22 GPa, therefore the suppression of XMCD intensity is due to the loss of magnetic order as a result of frustrated exchange interactions in the amorphous phase, and not due to quenching of local moments. When compared with other clathrates, the results point to the importance of guest ion-cage interactions in determining the mechanical stability of the framework structure and the critical pressure for amorphization. Finally, the crystalline structure is not found to recover after pressure release, resulting in a novel amorphous material that is at least metastable at ambient pressure and temperature.
