Nonlocal Charge Transport Mediated by Spin Diffusion in the Spin-Hall Effect Regime

A nonlocal electric response in the spin-Hall regime, resulting from spin diffusion mediating charge conduction, is predicted. The spin-mediated transport stands out due to its long-range character, and can give dominant contribution to nonlocal resistance. The characteristic range of nonlocality, set by the spin diffusion length, can be large enough to allow detection of this effect in materials such as GaAs despite its small magnitude. The detection is facilitated by a characteristic nonmonotonic dependence of transresistance on the external magnetic field, exhibiting sign changes and decay.

Vacuum Polarization and Screening of Supercritical Impurities in Graphene

Screening of charge impurities in graphene is analyzed using the exact solution for vacuum polarization obtained from the massless Dirac-Kepler problem. For the impurity charge below certain critical value no density perturbation is found away from the impurity, in agreement with the linear response theory result. For supercritical charge, however, the polarization distribution is shown to have a power law profile, leading to screening of the excess charge at large distances. The Dirac-Kepler scattering states give rise to standing wave oscillations in the local density of states which appear and become prominent in the supercritical regime.

Quantized Transport in Graphene p-n Junctions in Magnetic Field

Recent experimental work on locally gated graphene layers resulting in p-n junctions have revealed quantum Hall effect in their transport behavior. We explain the observed conductance quantization which is fractional in the bipolar regime and integer in the unipolar regime in terms of quantum Hall edge modes propagating along and across the p-n interface. In the bipolar regime the electron and hole modes can mix at the p-n boundary, leading to current partition and quantized shot noise plateaus similar to those of conductance, while in the unipolar regime transport is noiseless. These quantum Hall phenomena reflect the massless Dirac character of charge carriers in graphene, with particle-hole interplay manifest in mode mixing and noise in the bipolar regime.

Resonant Cooling of Nuclear Spins in Quantum Dots

We propose to use the spin-blockade regime in double quantum dots to reduce nuclear spin polarization fluctuations in analogy with optical Doppler cooling. The Overhauser shift brings electron levels in and out of resonance, creating feedback to suppress fluctuations. Coupling to the disordered nuclear spin background is a major source of noise and dephasing in electron spin measurements in such systems. Estimates indicate that a better than 10-fold reduction of fluctuations is possible.

Excitation of the dissipationless Higgs mode in a fermionic condensate

The amplitude mode of a fermionic superfluid, analogous to the Higgs Boson, becomes undamped in the strong coupling regime when its frequency is pushed inside the BCS energy gap. We argue that this is the case in cold gases due to the energy dispersion and nonlocality of the pairing interaction, and propose to use the Feshbach resonance regime for parametric excitation of this mode. The results presented for the BCS pairing dynamics indicate that even weak dispersion suppresses dephasing and gives rise to persistent oscillations. The frequency of oscillations extracted from our simulation of the BCS dynamics agrees with the prediction of the many-body theory.

Microwave-Induced Cooling of a Superconducting Qubit

We demonstrated microwave-induced cooling in a superconducting flux qubit. The thermal population in the first-excited state of the qubit is driven to a higher-excited state by way of a sideband transition. Subsequent relaxation into the ground state results in cooling. Effective temperatures as low as Teff~ 3 millikelvin are achieved for bath temperatures Tbath = 30 - 400 millikelvin, a cooling factor between 10 and 100. This demonstration provides an analog to optical cooling of trapped ions and atoms and is generalizable to other solid-state quantum systems. Active cooling of qubits, applied to quantum information science, provides a means for qubit-state preparation with improved fidelity and for suppressing decoherence in multi-qubit systems.

Coherent Quasiclassical Dynamics of a Persistent Current Qubit

A new regime of coherent quantum dynamics of a qubit is realized at low driving frequencies in the strong driving limit. Coherent transitions between qubit states occur via the Landau-Zener process when the system is swept through an energy-level avoided crossing. The quantum interference mediated by repeated transitions gives rise to an oscillatory dependence of the qubit population on the driving field amplitude and flux detuning. These interference fringes, which at high frequencies consist of individual multiphoton resonances, persist even for driving frequencies smaller than the decoherence rate, where individual resonances are no longer distinguishable. A theoretical model that incorporates dephasing agrees well with the observations.

Minimal excitation states of electrons in one-dimensional wires

A strategy is proposed to excite particles from a Fermi sea in a noise-free fashion by electromagnetic pulses with realistic parameters. We show that by using quantized pulses of simple form one can suppress the particle-hole pairs which are created by a generic excitation. The resulting many-body states are characterized by one or several particles excited above the Fermi surface accompanied by no disturbance below it. These excitations carry charge which is integer for noninteracting electron gas and fractional for Luttinger liquid. The operator algebra describing these excitations is derived, and a method of their detection which relies on noise measurement is proposed.

Spin Filtered Edge States and Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene

Electron edge states in graphene in the Quantum Hall effect regime can carry both charge and spin. We show that spin splitting of the zeroth Landau level gives rise to counterpropagating modes with opposite spin polarization. These chiral spin modes lead to a rich variety of spin current states, depending on the spin flip rate. A method to control the latter locally is proposed. We estimate Zeeman spin splitting enhanced by exchange, and obtain a spin gap of a few hundred Kelvin.

Synchronization in the BCS Pairing Dynamics as a Critical Phenomenon

Fermi gas with time-dependent pairing interaction hosts several different dynamical states. Coupling between the collective BCS pairing mode and individual Cooper pair states can make the latter either synchronize or dephase. We describe transition from phase-locked undamped oscillations to Landau-damped dephased oscillations in the collisionless, dissipationless regime as a function of coupling strength. In the dephased regime, we find a second transition at which the long-time asymptotic pairing amplitude vanishes. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods we establish a continuous (type II) character of both transitions.

Entropy and Correlation Functions of a Driven Quantum Spin Chain

We present an exact solution for a quantum spin chain driven through its critical points. Our approach is based on a many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener transition theory, applied to fermionized spin Hamiltonian. The resulting nonequilibrium state of the system, while being a pure quantum state, has local properties of a mixed state characterized by finite entropy density associated with Kibble-Zurek defects. The entropy, as well as the finite spin correlation length, are functions of the rate of sweep through the critical point. We analyze the anisotropic XY spin 1/2 model evolved with a full many-body evolution operator. With the help of Toeplitz determinants calculus, we obtain an exact form of correlation functions. The properties of the evolved system undergo an abrupt change at a certain critical sweep rate, signaling formation of ordered domains. We link this phenomenon to the behavior of complex singularities of the Toeplitz generating function.

Correlated electron states and transport in triangular arrays

We study correlated electron states in frustrated geometry of a triangular lattice. The interplay of long range interactions and finite residual entropy of a classical system gives rise to unusual effects in equilibrium ordering as well as in transport. A novel correlated fluid phase is identified in a wide range of densities and temperatures above freezing into commensurate solid phases. The charge dynamics in the correlated phase is described in terms of a height field, its fluctuations, and topological defects. We demonstrate that the height field fluctuations give rise to a ``free'' charge flow and finite dc conductivity. We show that freezing into the solid phase, controlled by the long range interactions, manifests itself in singularities of transport properties.

Energy Anomaly and Polarizability of Carbon Nanotubes

The energy of electron Fermi sea perturbed by external potential, represented as energy anomaly which accounts for the contribution of the deep-lying states, is analyzed for massive d = 1+1 Dirac fermions on a circle. The anomaly is a universal function of the applied field, and is related to known field-theoretic anomalies. We express transverse polarizability of Carbon nanotubes via the anomaly, in a way which exhibits the universality and scale-invariance of the response dominated by pi-electrons and qualitatively different from that of dielectric and conducting shells. Electron band transformation in a strong-field effect regime is predicted.

Multi-Photon, Multi-Level Dynamics in a Superconducting Persistent-Current Qubit

Single-, two-, and three-photon transitions were driven amongst five quantum states of a niobium persistent-current qubit. A multi-level energy-band diagram was extracted using microwave spectroscopy, and avoided crossings were directly measured between the third and fourth excited states. The energy relaxation times between states connected by single-photon and multi-photon transitions were approximately 30 - 100 microseconds. Three-photon coherent oscillations were observed between the qubit ground and fourth excited states with a decoherence time of approximately 50 nanoseconds.

Levy statistics and anomalous transport in quantum-dot arrays

A novel model of transport is proposed to explain power law current transients and memory phenomena observed in partially ordered arrays of semiconducting nanocrystals. The model describes electron transport by a stationary Levy process of transmission events and thereby requires no time dependence of system properties. The waiting time distribution with a characteristic long tail gives rise to a nonstationary response in the presence of a voltage pulse. We report on noise measurements that agree well with the predicted non-Poissonian fluctuations in current, and discuss possible mechanisms leading to this behavior.

Dynamical Selection in Emergent Fermionic Pairing

We consider evolution of a Fermi gas in the presence of a time-dependent BCS interaction. The pairing amplitude in the emergent BCS state is found to be an oscillatory function of time with predictable characteristics. The interplay of linear instability of the unpaired state and nonlinear interactions selects periodic soliton trains of a specific form, described by the Jacobi elliptic function dn. While the parameters of the soliton train, such as the period, amplitude, and time lag, fluctuate among different realizations, the elliptic function form remains robust. The parameter variation is accounted for by the fluctuations of particle distribution in the initial unpaired state.

Dynamical projection of atoms to Feshbach molecules at strong coupling

The dynamical atom/molecule projection, recently used to probe fermion pairing, is fast compared to collective fermion times, but slow on the Feshbach resonance width scale. Theory of detuning-induced dynamics of molecules coupled to resonantly associating atom pairs, employing a time-dependent many-body Green's function approach, is presented. An exact solution is found, predicting a 1/3 power law for molecule production efficiency at fast sweep. The results for $s$- and p-wave resonances are obtained and compared. The predicted production efficiency agrees with experimental observations for both condensed and incoherent molecules away from saturation.

Measurement of Counting Statistics of Electron Transport in a Tunnel Junction

We present measurements of the time-dependent fluctuations in electrical current in a voltage-biased tunnel junction. We were able to simultaneously extract the first three moments of the tunnel current counting statistics. Detailed comparison of the second and the third moment reveals that counting statistics is accurately described by the Poissonian distribution expected for spontaneous current fluctuations due to electron charge discreteness, realized in tunneling transport at negligible coupling to environment.
