Einstein and Jordan frames reconciled: a frame-invariant approach to scalar-tensor cosmology

Scalar-Tensor theories of gravity can be formulated in different frames, most notably, the Einstein and the Jordan one. While some debate still persists in the literature on the physical status of the different frames, a frame transformation in Scalar-Tensor theories amounts to a local redefinition of the metric, and then should not affect physical results. We analyze the issue in a cosmological context. In particular, we define all the relevant observables (redshift, distances, cross-sections, ...) in terms of frame-independent quantities. Then, we give a frame-independent formulation of the Boltzmann equation, and outline its use in relevant examples such as particle freeze-out and the evolution of the CMB photon distribution function. Finally, we derive the gravitational equations for the frame-independent quantities at first order in perturbation theory. From a practical point of view, the present approach allows the simultaneous implementation of the good aspects of the two frames in a clear and straightforward way.

Dynamical Relaxation of the Dark Matter to Baryon Ratio

A scalar field interacting differently with dark matter and baryons may explain why their ratio is of order unity today. We provide three working examples, checking them against the observations of CMB, Large Scale Structure, supernovae Ia, and post-newtonian tests of gravity. Such a scenario could make life much easier for supersymmetric dark matter candidates.

Supersymmetry and Brane Cosmology

We consider a five-dimensional brane world scenario where the fifth dimension is compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. We show that the familiar four-dimensional cosmology on our brane is easily recovered during a primordial stage of inflation if supersymmetry is exploited. Even if some vacuum energy density appears localized on our three brane, heavy supersymmetric bulk fields adjust themselves and acquire a nontrivial configuration along the extra-dimension. This phenomenon redistributes uniformly the energy density across the bulk and the resulting energy-momentum tensor does not display any singularity associated to the initial localized energy density on our three-brane. No jumps across the brane are present for the derivatives of the metric and Einstein's equations are solved by constant solutions along the fifth dimension. Our findings make it clear that cosmological phenomena in the supersymmetric brane world scenario must be studied taking properly into account bulk supersymmetric states. This comment is particularly relevant when applied to (super)gravity since in supersymmetric brane world scenarios, even though chiral matter and gauge fields may be restricted to live on boundaries, gravity multiplets always propagate in the bulk.
