Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and numerical simulations

The dependence of the pseudoscalar meson mass and decay constant is compared to one-loop Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory (PQChPT) in a numerical simulation with two light dynamical quarks. The characteristic behaviour with chiral logarithms is observed. The values of the fitted PQChPT-parameters are in a range close to the expectation in continuum in spite of the fact that the lattice spacing is still large, namely a=0.28 fm.

Lattice QCD with light dynamical quarks

We report on the simulation of QCD with light dynamical quarks using the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm. In an exploratory study with two flavours of quarks at lattice spacing about 0.27 fm and with quark mass down to one sixth of the strange quark mass eigenvalue spectra and autocorrelations have been studied. Here we present results on the volume dependence as well as tests of possible algorithmic improvements.

On the price of light quarks

The computational cost of numerical simulations of QCD with light dynamical Wilson-quarks is estimated. The qualitative behaviour of the pion mass and coupling at small quark masses is discussed.

The chiral limit of non-compact QED(3)

Non-compact QED(3) with four-component fermion flavor content larger than or equal to two is studied numerically near the chiral limit to understand its chiral symmetry breaking features. We monitor discretization and finite size effects on the chiral condensate by simulating the model at different values of the gauge coupling on lattices ranging in size from 10^3 to 50^3. Our upper bound for the dimensionless condensate beta^2 in the N_f=2 case is 5x10^{-5}.

Numerical simulation tests with light dynamical quarks

Two degenerate flavours of quarks are simulated with small masses down to about one fifth of the strange quark mass by using the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm. The lattice size is 8^3 x 16 with lattice spacing about 0.27fm which is not far from the N_t=4 thermodynamical cross-over line. Autocorrelations of different physical quantities are estimated as a function of the quark mass. The eigenvalue spectra of the Wilson-Dirac operator are investigated.

Unquenched Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory

The inclusion of fermionic loops contribution in Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory (NSPT) has a nice feature: it does not cost so much (provided only that an FFT can be implemented in a fairly efficient way). Focusing on Lattice SU(3), we report on the performance of the current implementation of the algorithm and the status of first computations undertaken.

The QCD thermal phase transition in the presence of a small chemical potential

We propose a new method to investigate the thermal properties of QCD with a small quark chemical potential $μ$. Derivatives of the phase transition point with respect to $μ$ are computed at $μ=0$ for 2 flavors of p-4 improved staggered fermions with $ma=0.1,0.2$ on a $16^3\times4$ lattice. The resulting Taylor expansion is well behaved for the small values of $μ_{\rm q}/T_c\sim0.1$ relevant for RHIC phenomenology, and predicts a critical curve $T_c(μ)$ in reasonable agreement with estimates obtained using exact reweighting. In addition, we contrast the case of isoscalar and isovector chemical potentials, quantify the effect of $μ\not=0$ on the equation of state, and comment on the complex phase of the fermion determinant in QCD with $μ\not=0$.

Unquenched domain wall quarks with TSMB

The numerical simulation of domain wall quarks with the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm is investigated. Tests are performed on a 8^3*4 lattice with N_f=2 quark flavours.

QCD at non-zero chemical potential and temperature from the lattice

A study of QCD at non-zero chemical potential, mu, and temperature, T, is performed using the lattice technique. The transition temperature (between the confined and deconfined phases) is determined as a function of mu and is found to be in agreement with other work. In addition the variation of the pressure and energy density with mu is obtained for small positive mu. These results are of particular relevance for heavy-ion collision experiments.

Numerical simulation of high quark densities in QCD with two colours

The DESY-Swansea Collaboration performed numerical simulations investigating SU(2) lattice gauge theory at non-zero chemical potential with one staggered quark flavour in the adjoint representation. This lattice model has similar features to QCD itself and its study gives interesting insights into some open problems of high density quark matter. In particular the role of the ``sign problem'' can be clarified in connection with diquark condensation and the phase diagram.

Aspects of the thermal phase transition of QCD with small chemical potential

We propose a new method to investigate the thermal properties of QCD with a small chemical potential $(μ)$. The derivatives of the phase transition point with respect to $μ$ are computed for 2 flavors of p4-improved staggered fermions. We moreover comment on the complex phase of the fermion determinant in finite-density QCD.

Diquark condensation in dense adjoint matter

We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory at non-zero chemical potential with one staggered quark flavor in the adjoint representation. In this model the fermion determinant, although real, can be both positive and negative. We have performed numerical simulations using both hybrid Monte Carlo and two-step multibosonic algorithms, the latter being capable of exploring sectors with either determinant sign. We find that the positive determinant sector behaves like a two-flavor theory, with the chiral condensate rotating into a two-flavor diquark condensate for mu>m_pi/2, implying a superfluid ground state. Good agreement is found with analytical predictions made using chiral perturbation theory. In the `full' model there is no sign of either onset of baryon density or diquark condensation for the range of chemical potentials we have considered. The impact of the sign problem has prevented us from exploring the true onset transition and the mode of diquark condensation, if any, for this model.

The residual mass in Lattice Heavy Quark Effective Theory to alpha^3 order

We determine to order alpha^3 in the quenched approximation the so-called residual mass in the lattice regularisation of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. We follow a gauge-invariant strategy which exploits the fact that this mass term dominates the exponential decrease of perturbative Wilson loops at large perimeters. Our computational tool is Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory. The new coefficient we compute is crucial to improve the determination of the (MS bar) mass of the b-quark from lattice simulations of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory.

Numerical Study of Dense Adjoint Matter in Two Color QCD

We identify the global symmetries of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with N flavors of staggered fermion in the presence of a quark chemical potential mu, for fermions in both fundamental and adjoint representations, and anticipate likely patterns of symmetry breaking at both low and high densities. Results from numerical simulations of the model with N=1 adjoint flavor on a 4^3x8 lattice are presented, using both hybrid Monte Carlo and Two-Step Multi-Boson algorithms. It is shown that the sign of the fermion determinant starts to fluctuate once the model enters a phase with non-zero baryon charge density. HMC simulations are not ergodic in this regime, but TSMB simulations retain ergodicity even in the dense phase, and in addition appear to show superior decorrelation. The HMC results for the equation of state and the pion mass show good quantitative agreement with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory, which should hold only for N>=2. The TSMB results incorporating the sign of the determinant support a delayed onset transition, consistent with the pattern of symmetry breaking expected for N=1.

Understanding stochastic perturbation theory: toy models and statistical analysis

The numerical stochastic perturbation method based on Parisi-Wu quantisation is applied to a suite of simple models to test its validity at high orders. Large deviations from normal distribution for the basic estimators are systematically found in all cases (``Pepe effect''). As a consequence one should be very careful in estimating statistical errors. We present some results obtained on Weingarten's ``pathological'' model where reliable results can be obtained by an application of the bootstrap method. We also present some evidence that in the far less trivial application to Lattice Gauge Theory a similar problem should not arise at moderately high loops (up to O(α^{10})).

Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory. Convergence and features of the stochastic process. Computations at fixed (Landau) Gauge

Concerning Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory, we discuss the convergence of the stochastic process (idea of the proof, features of the limit distribution, rate of convergence to equilibrium). Then we also discuss the expected fluctuations in the observables and give some idea to reduce them. In the end we show that also computation of quantities at fixed (Landau) Gauge is now possible.
