Impact of Higgs-boson measurements on SMEFT fits

We present current bounds on SMEFT operators that are mainly constrained by Higgs-boson observables, under different assumptions for the flavour structure of the UV theory. We investigate how the accuracy reached through a dedicated Higgs-boson precision physics program is starting to have a major impact in setting a lower bound on the scale of new physics, and we discuss the relevance of considering the scale evolution of the SMEFT coefficients in this context. We compare our results with the literature, pointing out the consistency of the results in spite of the different assumptions adopted in each analysis, and we discuss future steps aimed at improving the accuracy of the fit.

Theoretical framework for lattice QCD computations of $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $\bar{B}_s\to \ell^+\ell^- γ$ decays rates, including contributions from charming penguin diagrams

We develop a strategy for computing the $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-$ and $\bar{B}_s\toγ\ell^+\ell^-$ decay amplitudes using lattice QCD (where $\ell^\pm$ are charged leptons). We focus on those terms which contain complex contributions to the amplitude, due to on-shell intermediate states propagating between the weak operator and electromagnetic current(s). Such terms, which are generally estimated using model calculations and represent significant uncertainties in the phenomenological predictions for these decays, cannot be computed using standard lattice QCD techniques. It has recently been shown that such contributions can be computed using spectral-density methods and our proposed strategy, which we discuss in detail, is built on this approach. The complex contributions include the ``charming penguins" (matrix elements of the current-current operators $O_1^{(c)}$ and $O_2^{(c)}$ defined in Eq. (6) below), in which the charm-quark loop can propagate long distances, particularly close to the region of charmonium resonances. They also include the contributions from the chromomagnetic operator ($O_8$ in standard notation, defined in Eq. (8) below). We discuss the renormalization of the ultra-violet divergences, and in particular those which arise due to ``contact" terms, and explain how those which appear as inverse powers of the lattice spacing can be subtracted non-perturbatively. We apply the spectral density methods in an instructive exploratory computation of the charming penguin diagram in $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-$ decays in which the virtual photon is emitted from the charm-quark loop (the diagram in Fig. 1(a) below) and discuss the prospects and strategies for the reliable determination of the amplitudes in future dedicated computations; computations which are however, beyond the scope of the present paper.

Constraining new physics effective interactions via a global fit of electroweak, Drell-Yan, Higgs, top, and flavour observables

We present results from a global fit of Standard Model parameters and dimension-6 SMEFT Wilson coefficients that includes electroweak, Drell-Yan, Higgs-boson, top-quark, and flavour observables. Fits obtained by floating individual coefficients are also discussed. The leading-order scale dependence of the SMEFT Wilson coefficients is consistently included in the evolution from the UV scale to the electroweak scale and the low-energy scale of flavour observables. In defining the SMEFT set of active operators we consider both the $U(3)^5$ and the $U(2)^5$ flavour symmetric limits. All fits are obtained within the $\texttt{HEPfit}$ framework and are based on the most recent experimental results and state-of-the-art theoretical predictions for all the observables considered.

Electroweak precision tests

The Standard Model of particle physics provides a rigorous framework within which processes mediated by electroweak interactions can be calculated with great accuracy. By comparing with high-precision experimental measurements of the same processes, deviations from Standard Model predictions can be identified as indirect signals of new physics. In particular, electroweak precision fits combine multiple observables and provide a unique test of the Standard Model consistency at the quantum level.

Global analysis of charm mixing parameters and determination of the CKM angle $γ$

We present an updated global analysis of beauty decays sensitive to the angle $γ$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and of $D$-meson mixing data in the framework of approximate universality, in which CP violation in $D-\overline{D}$ mixing is described in terms of two universal weak phases corresponding to dispersive and absorptive contributions. We extract the fundamental theoretical parameters determining absorptive and dispersive contributions to $D$ meson mixing and CP violation, together with the angle $γ$. The results for the charm mixing parameters are $x_{12} \simeq x = (0.401 \pm 0.043)\%$ and $y_{12} \simeq y = (0.610 \pm 0.017)\%$, while the two CP-violating phases are given by $ϕ_2^M = (0.13 \pm 0.70)^{\circ}$ and $ϕ_2^Γ = (2.1 \pm 1.6)^{\circ}$. The angle $γ$ is found to be $γ= (65.7 \pm 2.5)^{\circ}$, in excellent agreement with the indirect determination from the Unitarity Triangle analysis.

Impact of the recent measurements of the top-quark and W-boson masses on electroweak precision fits

We assess the impact of the very recent measurement of the top-quark mass by the CMS Collaboration on the fit of electroweak data in the Standard Model and beyond, with particular emphasis on the prediction for the mass of the W boson. We then compare this prediction with the average of the corresponding experimental measurements including the new measurement by the CDF Collaboration, and discuss its compatibility in the Standard Model, in new physics models with oblique corrections, and in the dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory. Finally, we present the updated global fit to electroweak precision data in these models.

Power corrections to the CP-violation parameter $\varepsilon_K$

We present the calculation of the short-distance power corrections to the CP-violation parameter $\varepsilon_K$ coming from dimension-8 operators in the $ΔS=2$ effective Hamiltonian. A first estimate of this contribution, obtained for large-$N_c$ and in the chiral limit, was provided in ref. [arXiv:hep-ph/0406094]. Here we evaluate and include the $\mathcal{O}(m_K^2/m_c^2)$ and $\mathcal{O}(Λ_{QCD}^2/m_c^2)$ contributions that, a priori, could induce $\mathcal{O}(1)$ corrections to previous estimates, as $m_K$ is numerically of order $Λ_{QCD}$. Our computation shows that there are several dimension-8 operators besides the one considered before. Their effect on $\varepsilon_K$, however, accidentally cancels out to a large extent, leaving the final correction at the level of 1%.

Global analysis of electroweak data in the Standard Model

We perform a global fit of electroweak data within the Standard Model, using state-of-the art experimental and theoretical results, including a determination of the electromagnetic coupling at the electroweak scale based on recent lattice calculations. In addition to the posteriors for all parameters and observables obtained from the global fit, we present indirect determinations for all parameters and predictions for all observables. Furthermore, we present full predictions, obtained using only the experimental information on Standard Model parameters, and a fully indirect determination of Standard Model parameters using only experimental information on electroweak data. Finally, we discuss in detail the compatibility of experimental data with the Standard Model and find a global p-value of 0.5.

The Belle II Physics Book

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

D-Dbar Mixing in the Standard Model and Beyond from Nf=2 Twisted Mass QCD

We present the first unquenched lattice QCD results for the bag parameters controlling the short distance contribution to D meson oscillations in the Standard Model and beyond. We have used the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks, at four lattice spacings and light meson masses in the range 280-500 MeV. Renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively with the RI-MOM method. The bag-parameter results have been used to constrain New Physics effects in D-Dbar mixing, to put a lower bound to the generic New Physics scale and to constrain off-diagonal squark mass terms for TeV-scale Supersymmetry.

B-physics from Nf=2 tmQCD: the Standard Model and beyond

We present a lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and B_s decay constants, the B-mixing bag parameters for the full four-fermion operator basis as well as determinations for ξand f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_i^{(q)}} extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass. We used N_f = 2 twisted mass Wilson fermions at four values of the lattice spacing with pion masses ranging from 280 to 500 MeV. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the bottom quark region has been carried out on ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses, exploiting the fact that they have an exactly known infinite mass limit. Our results are m_b(m_b, \overline{\rm{MS}})=4.29(12) GeV, f_{Bs}=228(8) MeV, f_{B}=189(8) MeV and f_{Bs}/f_B=1.206(24). Moreover with our results for the bag-parameters we find ξ=1.225(31), B_1^{(s)}/B_1^{(d)}=1.01(2), f_{Bd}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(d)}} = 216(10) MeV and f_{Bs}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(s)}} = 262(10) MeV. We also computed the bag parameters for the complete basis of the four-fermion operators which are required in beyond the SM theories. By using these results for the bag parameters we are able to provide a refined Unitarity Triangle analysis in the presence of New Physics, improving the bounds coming from B_{(s)}-\bar B_{(s)} mixing.

The UTfit Collaboration Average of $D$ meson mixing data: Winter 2014

We update the analysis of $D$ meson mixing including the latest experimental results as of January 2014. We derive constraints on the parameters $M_{12}$, $Γ_{12}$ and $Φ_{12}$ that describe $D$ meson mixing using all available data, allowing for CP violation. We also provide posterior distributions for observable parameters appearing in $D$ physics.

B-physics computations from Nf=2 tmQCD

We present an accurate lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and Bs decay constants, the B-mixing bag-parameters for the full four-fermion operator basis, as well as estimates for ξand f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_q} extrapolated to the continuum limit and the physical pion mass. We have used Nf = 2 dynamical quark gauge configurations at four values of the lattice spacing generated by ETMC. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the bottom quark region has been carried out using ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses, having an exactly known infinite mass limit.

Kaon Mixing Beyond the SM from Nf=2 tmQCD and model independent constraints from the UTA

We present the first unquenched, continuum limit, lattice QCD results for the matrix elements of the operators describing neutral kaon oscillations in extensions of the Standard Model. Owing to the accuracy of our calculation on ΔS=2 weak Hamiltonian matrix elements, we are able to provide a refined Unitarity Triangle analysis improving the bounds coming from model independent constraints on New Physics. In our non-perturbative computation we use a combination of Nf=2 maximally twisted sea quarks and Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks in order to achieve both O(a)-improvement and continuum-like renormalization properties for the relevant four-fermion operators. The calculation of the renormalization constants has been performed non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme. Based on simulations at four values of the lattice spacing and a number of quark masses we have extrapolated/interpolated our results to the continuum limit and physical light/strange quark masses.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Testing the Standard Model and searching for New Physics with $B_d \to ππ$ and $B_s \to K K$ decays

We propose to perform a combined analysis of $B \to ππ$ and $B_s \to K^+ K^-$ modes, in the framework of a global CKM fit. The method optimizes the constraining power of these decays and allows to derive constraints on NP contributions to penguin amplitudes or on the $B_s$ mixing phase. We illustrate these capabilities with a simplified analysis using the recent measurements by the LHCb Collaboration, neglecting correlations with other SM observables.

The impact of SuperB on flavour physics

This report provides a succinct summary of the physics programme of SuperB, and describes that potential in the context of experiments making measurements in flavour physics over the next 10 to 20 years. Detailed comparisons are made with Belle II and LHCb, the other B physics experiments that will run in this decade. SuperB will play a crucial role in defining the landscape of flavour physics over the next 20 years.
