QCD factorization for the pion diffractive dissociation to two jets

We calculate the cross section of a pion diffraction dissociation in two jets with large transverse momenta originating from a hard gluon exchange between the pion constituents. To the leading logarithmic accuracy (in energy), the contribution coming from small transverse separations between the quark and the antiquark in the pion acquires the expected factorized form, the longitudinal momentum distribution of the jets being proportional to the pion distribution amplitude. The hard gluon exchange can in this case be considered as a part of the unintegrated gluon distribution. Beyond the leading logarithms (in energy) this proportionality does not hold. Moreover, the collinear factorization appears to be broken by the end-point singularities. Remarkably enough, the longitudinal momentum distribution of the jets for the non-factorizable contribution is calculable, and turns out to be the same as for the factorizable contribution with the asymptotic pion distribution amplitude.

The Interpretation of Quantum-Mechanical Models with Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and Real Spectra

We study the quantum-mechanical interpretation of models with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and real spectra. We set up a general framework for the analysis of such systems in terms of Hermitian Hamiltonians defined in the usual Hilbert space $L_2(-\infty,\infty)$. Special emphasis is put on the correct definition of the algebra of physical observables. Within this scheme we consider various examples, including the model recently introduced by Cannata et al. and the model of Hatano and Nelson.

Coulomb dissociation of a fast pion into two jets

We calculate the electromagnetic contribution to the scattering amplitude of pion diffractive dissociation into di-jets which is described by one photon exchange. The result shows that the factorization procedure known for the description of exclusive reactions holds also for this quasi-exclusive process. We find that the longitudinal momentum distribution of di-jets does not depend on the form of the pion distribution amplitude. We discuss the magnitude of the cross section.

Direct J/Psi hadroproduction in k_\perp-factorization and the color octet mechanism

The hadroproduction of direct J/Psi in the framework of the k_\perp-factorization approach is studied. The color-singlet contribution is essentially larger than in the collinear approach but is still an order of magnitude below the data. The deficit may be well described by the color octet contribution with the value of the matrix element <0|O^{J/Ψ}_8(^3S_1)|0> substantially decreased in comparison with the fits in the collinear factorization. This should lead to a reduction of the large transverse polarization, predicted in the collinear approach.

Towards a solution of the charmonium production controversy: k_t-factorization versus color octet mechanism

The cross section of χ_{cJ} hadroproduction is calculated in the k_t-factorization approach. We find a significant contribution of the χ_{c1} state due to non-applicability of the Landau-Yang theorem because of off-shell gluons. The results are in agreement with data and, in contrast to the collinear factorization, show a dominance of the color singlet part and a strong suppression of the color octet contribution. Our results could therefore lead to a solution of the longstanding controversy between the color singlet model and the color octet mechanism.

Light vector meson photoproduction at large t

We have studied in perturbative QCD all independent helicity amplitudes describing the photoproduction of light vector mesons at large $t$. We found a new hard production mechanism which is related to the possibility for a real photon to fluctuate into a massless $q\bar q$ pair in a chiral-odd spin configuration. Each helicity amplitude is given as a sum of a usual chiral-even contribution (when the helicities of quark and antiquark are antiparallel) and this additional chiral-odd part (where the helicities of quark and antiquark are parallel). The chiral-odd contribution is large, it leads to a dominance of the non spin-flip amplitude in a very broad region of intermediately high $|t|$. All amplitudes are expressed in terms of short distance asymptotics of the light-cone wave functions of vector meson (photon). We demonstrate that for each helicity amplitude there exists a soft non-factorizable contribution. We give arguments that for dominant non spin-flip helicity amplitude the relative contribution of the soft nonfactorizable interactions is numerically not large.

Heavy quark production as sensitive test for an improved description of high energy hadron collisions

QCD dynamics at small quark and gluon momentum fractions or large total energy, which plays a major role for HERA, the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC physics, is still poorly understood. For one of the simplest processes, namely bottom-antibottom production, next-to-leading-order perturbation theory fails. We show that the combination of two recently developed theoretical concepts, the k_perp-factorization and the next-to-leading-logarithmic-approximation BFKL vertex, gives perfect agreement with data. One can therefore hope that these concepts provide a valuable foundation for the description of other high energy processes.

Tensor polarization of vector mesons from quark and gluon fragmentation

We considered the electro- and photoproduction of ρand other vector mesons with moderately large transverse momentum in the scattering of unpolarized electrons on unpolarized nucleons and nuclei. For these processes we have analyzed how to extract the novel fragmentation functions \bar b_1^q(z), \bar b_1^G(z), describing tensor polarization, and the photon double spin-flip distribution Δ^γfrom the angular distribution of meson decay products.

The gluon field of a fast moving nucleus and the effective langrangian for QCD at high energy

Starting from the effective lagrangian for QCD at high energy we calculate the lowest perturbative contributions to the potential of a relativistic nucleus and compare our results to those derived by Kovchegov (see Y.V. Kovchegov, Phys. Rev. {\bf D55}, 5445 (1997)). The results differ already at order g^3 which can be traced to the fact that the meaning of the underlying gluon fields is different. (The effective gluon field we use is a gauge invariant object.) Both approaches should therefore be seen as alternatives, the relative merits of which have to be judged by their phenomenological success.

Small-x behaviour of the polarized structure function $F_3^γ(x,Q^2)$

We study the small-$x$ behaviour of the polarized photon structure function $F_3^{\ga}$, measuring the gluon transversity distribution, in the leading logarithmic approximation of perturbative QCD. There are two contributions, both arising from two-gluon exchange. The leading contribution to small-$x$ is related to the BFKL pomeron and behaves like $x^{-1-\om_2}$, $\om_2 = {\cal O}(\al_S)$. The other contribution includes in particular the ones summed by the DGLAP equation and behaves like $x^{1-\om_0^{(+)}}$, $\om_0^{(+)} = {\cal O}(\sqrt{\al_S})$.

The BFKL Pomeron in 2+1 Dimensional QCD

We investigate the high-energy scattering in the spontaneously broken Yang - Mills gauge theory in 2+1 space--time dimensions and present the exact solution of the leading $\ln s$ BFKL equation. The solution is constructed in terms of special functions using the earlier results of two of us (L.N.L. and L.S.). The analytic properties of the $t$-channel partial wave as functions of the angular momentum and momentum transfer have been studied. We find in the angular momentum plane: (i) a Regge pole whose trajectory has an intercept larger than 1 and (ii) a fixed cut with the rightmost singularity located at $j=1$. The massive Yang - Mills theory can be considered as a theoretical model for the (non-perturbative) Pomeron. We study the main structure and property of the solution including the Pomeron trajectory at momentum transfer different from zero. The relation to the results of M. Li and C-I. Tan for the massless case is discussed.

Next-to-leading gluonic reggeons in the high-energy effective action

We study the next-to-leading gluon exchange in the high-energy scattering that contributes to the amplitude to order $s^0$ up to logarithmic corrections. Similar to the leading gluon exchange these contribution can be described in terms of reggeon exchanges. There are several gluonic reggeons at the next-to-leading level. Some of them transfer parity or gauge group representation different from the leading gluonic reggeon. Unlike the leading one they are sensitive to the helicity and transverse momenta of the scattering partons. We extend the high-energy effective action and derive from the action of gluodynamics the terms describing the next-to-leading reggeons and their interaction in the multi-Regge approximation.

Gluonic reggeons

Contributions from gluon interactions, which are non-leading in high-energy semi-hard processes, are studied and represented in terms of reggeon exchanges. Unlike the leading gluonic reggeon, related to the BFKL pomeron, the non-leading reggeons are sensitive to the spin and transverse momentum distributions of scattering partons. There are several gluonic reggeons with poles in the vicinity of angular momentum $j=0$ contributing to the perturbative Regge asymptotics of QCD. We extend the high-energy effective action including sub-leading terms which describe these reggeons and their interactions with scattering quarks and gluons in the multi-Regge approximation.

Diffractive meson production from virtual photons with odd charge-parity exchange

We calculate the cross section of diffractive charge-parity C=+1 neutral meson production in virtual photon proton collision at high energies. Due to the opposite C-parities of photon and meson M (M = eta_C, pi^0, a_2) this process probes the t-channel C=-1 odderon exchange which is described here as noninteracting three-gluon exchange. Estimates for the cross section of the inelastic diffractive process gamma^* p -> eta_C X_p are presented. The total cross section of diffractive η_C meson photoproduction is found to be 47 pb. The cross sections for the diffractive production of light mesons (pi^0, a_2) in γ^* p collisions are of the same order if the photon virtuality Q^2 is m^2_C.

Small $x$ behaviour of the chirally-odd parton distribution $h_1(x,Q^2)$

The small $x$ behaviour of the structure function $h_1(x,Q^2)$ is studied within the leading logarithmic approximation of perturbative QCD. There are two contributions relevant at small $x$. The leading one behaves like $(\frac{1}{x})^0$ i.e. it is just a constant in this limit. The second contribution, suppressed by one power of $x$, includes the terms summed by the GLAP equation. Thus for $h_1(x,Q^2)$ the GLAP asymptotics and Regge asymptotics are completely different, making $h_1(x,Q^2)$ quite an interesting quantity for the study of small $x$ physics.

Effective Action for High-Energy Scattering in Gravity

The multi-Regge effective action is derived directly from the linearized gravity action. After excluding the redundant field components we separate the fields into momentum modes and integrate over modes which correspond neither to the kinematics of scattering nor to the one of exchanged particles. The effective vertices of scattering and of particle production are obtained as sums of the contributions from the triple and quartic interaction terms and the fields in the effective action are defined in terms of the two physical components of the metric fluctuation.

Symmetry Properties of the Effective Action for High-Energy Scattering in QCD

We study the effective action describing high-energy scattering processes in the multi-Regge limit of QCD, which should provide the starting point for a new attempt to overcome the limitations of the leading logarithmic and the eikonal approximations. The action can be obtained via simple graphical rules or by integrating in the QCD functional integral over momentum modes of gluon and quark fields that do not appear explicitely as scattering or exchanged particles in the considered processes. The supersymmetry is used to obtain the terms in the action involving quarks fields from the pure gluonic ones. We observe a Weizsäcker - Williams type relations between terms describing scattering and production of particles.
