HD 148797: A bright F-type star with two moderate-period low-density sub-Jovian planets. Compact multi-planet architectures are common in the Neptunian savanna

We report the confirmation and characterisation of two moderate-period sub-Jovian planets transiting the bright F-type star HD 148797 (G=9.4 mag, Teff=6441 +/- 51 K). Using photometric time series from TESS and CHEOPS, we determine orbital periods of 42.1 d for HD 148797 b and 68.2 d for HD 148797 c, putting the period ratio very close to the golden mean at 1.619 and therefore near several strong harmonics, and measure planetary radii of 8.25 +/- 0.37 RE and 8.37 +/- 0.38 RE, respectively. We detect significant anti-correlated transit-timing variations for both planets, which contain enough harmonic information to yield photodynamical masses of 39.3 +13 -8.5 ME for HD 148797 b and 39.6 +/- 9.3 ME for HD 148797 c. The corresponding bulk densities, 0.39 +/- 0.12 and 0.377 +/- 0.084 g/cm3, place both planets among the low-density sub-Jovians of the Neptunian savanna. The architecture of HD 148797 is not unusual within this regime: we find that detected multi-system fractions in the savanna remain at ~70-90%, and that most savanna multi-planet systems contain at least one adjacent planet pair with Pout/Pin < 3. This pattern suggests that savanna sub-Jovians are commonly found in dynamically cold systems, consistent with smoother migration pathways such as disk-driven migration rather than disruptive high-eccentricity tidal migration. As a bright, co-evolved system hosting two warm savanna sub-Jovians with similar radii and masses, HD 148797 is also a promising target for comparative atmospheric characterisation.

The star HIP 41378 potentially misaligned with its cohort of long-period planets

The obliquity between the stellar spin axis and the planetary orbit, detected via the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, is a tracer of the formation history of planetary systems. While obliquity measurements have been extensively applied to hot Jupiters and short-period planets, they remain rare for cold and long-period planets due to observational challenges, particularly their long transit durations. We report the detection of the RM effect for the 19-hour-long transit of HIP 41378 f, a temperate giant planet on a 542-day orbit, observed through a worldwide spectroscopic campaign. We measure a slight projected obliquity of 21 $\pm$ 8 degrees and a significant 3D spin-orbit angle of 52 $\pm$ 6 degrees, based on the measurement of the stellar rotation period. HIP 41378 f is part of a 5-transiting planetary system with planets close to mean motion resonances. The observed misalignment likely reflects a primordial tilt of the stellar spin axis relative to the protoplanetary disk, rather than dynamical interactions. HIP 41378 f is the first non-eccentric long-period (P>100 days) planet observed with the RM effect, opening new constraints on planetary formation theories. This observation should motivate the exploration of planetary obliquities across a longer range of orbital distances through international collaboration.

Conductance switching at the nanoscale of diarylethene derivatives self-assembled monolayers on La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$

We report on the phosphonic acid route for the grafting of functional molecules, optical switch (dithienylethene diphosphonic acid, DDA), on La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO). Compact self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of DDA are formed on LSMO as studied by topographic atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry, water contact angle and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The conducting AFM measurements show that the electrical conductance of LSMO/DDA is about 3 decades below that of the bare LSMO substrate. Moreover, the presence of the DDA SAM suppresses the known conductance switching of the LSMO substrate that is induced by mechanical and/or bias constraints during C-AFM measurements. A partial light-induced conductance switching between the open and closed forms of the DDA is observed for the LSMO/DDA/C-AFM tip molecular junctions (closed/open conductance ratio of about 8). We show that, in the case of long-time exposition to UV light, this feature can be masked by a non-reversible decrease (a factor of about 15) of the conductance of the LSMO electrode.

Trapping in irradiated p-on-n silicon sensors at fluences anticipated at the HL-LHC outer tracker

The degradation of signal in silicon sensors is studied under conditions expected at the CERN High-Luminosity LHC. 200 $\mu$m thick n-type silicon sensors are irradiated with protons of different energies to fluences of up to $3 \cdot 10^{15}$ neq/cm$^2$. Pulsed red laser light with a wavelength of 672 nm is used to generate electron-hole pairs in the sensors. The induced signals are used to determine the charge collection efficiencies separately for electrons and holes drifting through the sensor. The effective trapping rates are extracted by comparing the results to simulation. The electric field is simulated using Synopsys device simulation assuming two effective defects. The generation and drift of charge carriers are simulated in an independent simulation based on PixelAV. The effective trapping rates are determined from the measured charge collection efficiencies and the simulated and measured time-resolved current pulses are compared. The effective trapping rates determined for both electrons and holes are about 50% smaller than those obtained using standard extrapolations of studies at low fluences and suggests an improved tracker performance over initial expectations.

Aspects of Neutrino Interactions (Scattering at small $Q^2$- Region)

The article begins with a description of chiral symmetry and its application to neutrino induced reactions. For small $Q^2$ (forward direction) the process is dominated by the amplitute with helicity zero where the pion pole disappears when multiplied with the polarization vector. The remaining part of the amplitude is determined by PCAC. For $E_\nu > 2$ GeV the computed cross sections are in good agreement with data. In coherent pion production we expect equal yields for neutrinos and antineutrinos a relation which for $E_\nu > 2$ GeV is fulfilled. We discuss specific features of the data and suggest methods for improving them by presenting new estimates for the incoherent background.

Observation of the rare $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism, and Domain Wall Scattering in Epitaxial hcp Co Films

Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) observed in transport measurements of hcp Co films with stripe domains were recently reported and interpreted in terms of a novel domain wall (DW) scattering mechanism. Here detailed MR measurements, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic calculations are combined to elucidate the origin of MR in this material. The large negative room temperature MR reported previously is shown to be due to ferromagnetic resistivity anisotropy. Measurements of the resistivity for currents parallel (CIW) and perpendicular to DWs (CPW) have been conducted as a function of temperature. Low temperature results show that any intrinsic effect of DWs scattering on MR of this material is very small compared to the anisotropic MR.
