The properties of D and D* mesons in the nuclear medium

We study the properties of $D$ and $D^*$ mesons in nuclear matter within a simultaneous self-consistent coupled-channel unitary approach that implements heavy-quark symmetry. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects, and for the $D$ and $D^*$ self-energies in a self-consistent manner. We pay a special attention to the renormalization of the intermediate propagators in the medium beyond the usual cutoff scheme. We analyze the behavior in the nuclear medium of the rich spectrum of dynamically-generated baryonic resonances in the C=1 and S=0 sector, and their influence in the self-energy and, hence, the spectral function of the $D$ and $D^*$ mesons. The $D$ meson quasiparticle peak mixes with $Σ_c(2823)N^{-1}$ and $Σ_c(2868)N^{-1}$ states while the $Λ_c(2595)N^{-1}$ mode is present in the low-energy tail of the spectral function. The $D^*$ spectral function incorporates $J=3/2$ resonances, and $Σ_c(2902)N^{-1}$ and $Λ_c(2941)N^{-1}$ fully determine the behavior of $D^*$ meson spectral function at the quasiparticle peak. As density increases, these resonant-hole modes tend to smear out and the spectral functions get broad. We also obtain the $D$ and $D^*$ scattering lengths, and optical potentials for different density regimes. The $D$ meson potential stays attractive while the $D^*$ meson one is repulsive with increasing densities up to twice that of the normal nuclear matter. Compared to previous in-medium SU(4) models, we obtain similar values for the real part of the $D$ meson potential but much smaller imaginary parts. This result can have important implications for the observation of $D^0$-nucleus bound states.

Strange mesons from SIS to FAIR

The properties of $K$ and $\bar K$ mesons in nuclear matter at finite temperature are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the $s$- and p-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding on all the baryons involved, and $π$ and kaon self-energies. The $\bar K$ spectral function spreads over a wide range of energies, reflecting the melting of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance and the contribution of hyperon-hole components at finite temperature. In the $KN$ sector, the quasi-particle peak is considerably broadened with increasing density and temperature. We also study the energy weighted sum rules of the kaon propagator by matching the Dyson form of the propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the spectral function. We analyze the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

Strange and charm mesons at FAIR

We study the properties of strange and charm mesons in hot and dense matter within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach for the experimental conditions of density and temperature expected for the CBM experiment at FAIR/GSI. The in-medium solution at finite temperature accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding of all the baryons involved, and meson self-energies. We analyze the behaviour in this hot and dense environment of dynamically-generated baryonic resonances together with the evolution with density and temperature of the strange and open-charm meson spectral functions. We test the spectral functions for strange mesons using energy-weighted sum rules and finally discuss the implications of the properties of charm mesons on the D_{s0}(2317) and the predicted X(3700) scalar resonances.

Charm and hidden charm scalar mesons in the nuclear medium

We study the renormalization of the properties of low lying charm and hidden charm scalar mesons in a nuclear medium, concretely of the D_{s0}(2317) and the theoretical hidden charm state X(3700). We find that for the D_{s0}(2317), with negligible width at zero density, the width becomes about 100 MeV at normal nuclear matter density, while in the case of the X(3700) the width becomes as large as 200 MeV. We discuss the origin of this new width and trace it to reactions occurring in the nucleus, while offering a guideline for future experiments testing these changes. We also show how those medium modifications will bring valuable information on the nature of the scalar resonances and the mechanisms of the interaction of D mesons with nucleons and nuclei.

Energy weighted sum rules for mesons in hot and dense matter

We study energy weighted sum rules of the pion and kaon propagator in nuclear matter at finite temperature. The sum rules are obtained from matching the Dyson form of the meson propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. We calculate the sum rules for specific models of the kaon and pion self-energy. The in-medium spectral densities of the K and anti-K mesons are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the S- and P-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The pion self-energy is determined from the P-wave coupling to particle-hole and Delta-hole excitations, modified by short range correlations. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the meson spectral function. We discuss the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

Charmed baryon resonances with heavy-quark symmetry

We study charmed baryon resonances that are generated dynamically from a coupled-channel unitary approach that implements heavy-quark symmetry. Some states can already be identified with experimental observations, such as $Λ_c(2595)$, $Λ_c(2660)$, $Σ_c(2902)$ or $Λ_c(2941)$, while others need a compilation of more experimental data as well as an extension of the model to include higher order contributions. We also compare our model to previous SU(4) schemes.

Charm at FAIR

Charmed mesons in hot and dense matter are studied within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach for the experimental conditions of density and temperature expected at the CBM experiment at FAIR/GSI. The $D$ meson spectral function broadens with increasing density with an extended tail towards lower energies due to $Λ_c(2593) N^{-1}$ and $Σ_c(2800) N^{-1}$ excitations. The in-medium $\bar D$ meson mass increases with density. We also discuss the consequences for the renormalized properties in nuclear matter of the charm scalar $D_{s0}(2317)$ and D(2400), and the predicted hidden charm X(3700) resonances at FAIR energies.

The s-wave charmed baryon resonances from a coupled-channel approach with heavy quark symmetry

We study charmed baryon resonances which are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled channel model that treats the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons on equal footing as required by heavy-quark symmetry. It is an extension of recent SU(4) models with t-channel vector meson exchanges to a SU(8) spin-flavor scheme, but differs considerably from the SU(4) approach in how the strong breaking of the flavor symmetry is implemented. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to recently observed baryon resonances, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data as well as an extension of the model to d-wave meson-baryon interactions and p-wave coupling in the neglected s- and u-channel diagrams. Of several novelties, we find that the Lambda_c(2595), which emerged as a ND quasi-bound state within the SU(4) approaches, becomes predominantly a ND* quasi-bound state in the present SU(8) scheme.

Neutron stars within the SU(2) parity doublet model

The equation of state of beta-stable and charge neutral nucleonic matter is computed within the SU(2) parity doublet model in mean field and in the relativistic Hartree approximation. The mass of the chiral partner of the nucleon is assumed to be 1200 MeV. The transition to the chiral restored phase turns out to be a smooth crossover in all the cases considered, taking place at a baryon density of just $2ρ_0$. The mass-radius relations of compact stars are calculated to constrain the model parameters from the maximum mass limit of neutron stars. It is demonstrated that chiral symmetry starts to be restored, which in this model implies the appearance of the chiral partners of the nucleons, in the center of neutron stars. However, the analysis of the decay width of the assumed chiral partner of the nucleon poses limits on the validity of the present version of the model to describe vacuum properties.

Strange mesons in nuclear matter at finite temperature

We study the properties of $K$ and $\bar K$ mesons in nuclear matter at finite temperature from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the $s$- and p-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding on all the baryons involved, and $π$ and kaon self-energies. We calculate $K$ and $\bar K$ (off-shell) spectral functions and single particle properties. The $\bar K$ effective mass gets lowered by about -50 MeV in cold nuclear matter at saturation density and by half this reduction at T=100 MeV. The p-wave contribution to the ${\bar K}$ optical potential, due to $Λ$, $Σ$ and $Σ^*$ excitations, becomes significant for momenta larger than 200 MeV/c and reduces the attraction felt by the $\bar K$ in the nuclear medium. The $\bar K$ spectral function spreads over a wide range of energies, reflecting the melting of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance and the contribution of $YN^{-1}$ components at finite temperature. In the $KN$ sector, we find that the low-density theorem is a good approximation for the $K$ self-energy close to saturation density due to the absence of resonance-hole excitations. The $K$ potential shows a moderate repulsive behavior, whereas the quasi-particle peak is considerably broadened with increasing density and temperature. We discuss the implications for the decay of the $ϕ$ meson at SIS/GSI energies as well as in the future FAIR/GSI project.

Resonances in chiral unitary approaches

The extension of chiral theories to the description of resonances, via the incorporation of unitarity in coupled channels, has provided us with a new theoretical perspective on the nature of some of the observed excited hadrons. In this contribution some of the early achievements in the field of baryonic resonances are reviewed, the recent evidence of the two-pole nature of the Lambda(1405) is discussed and results on charmed baryon resonances are presented.

Neutron matter at finite temperature

We calculate the neutron matter equation of state at finite temperature based on low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions. The free energy is obtained from a loop expansion around the Hartree-Fock energy, including contributions from normal and anomalous diagrams. We focus on densities below saturation density with temperatures T <= 10 MeV and compare our results to the model-independent virial equation of state and to variational calculations. Good agreement with the virial equation of state is found at low density. We provide simple estimates for the theoretical error, important for extrapolations to astrophysical conditions.

In-medium properties of D-mesons at FAIR

We obtain the D-meson spectral density at finite temperature for the conditions of density and temperature expected at FAIR. We perform a self-consistent coupled-channel calculation taking, as a bare interaction, a separable potential model. The $Λ_c$ (2593) resonance is generated dynamically. We observe that the D-meson spectral density develops a sizeable width while the quasiparticle peak stays close to the free position. The consequences for the D-meson production at FAIR are discussed.

The kaon optical potential modified by Θ^+ Pentaquark excitation

We study the kaon nuclear optical potential including the effect of the Θ^+ pentaquark in a self-consistent approach, starting from an extension of the Juelich meson-exchange potential as bare kaon-nucleon interaction. Significant differences between a fully self-consistent calculation and the low-density Tρapproximation are observed. Whereas te influence of the KN -> Θ^+ absorption process is found to be negligible, due to the small Θ^+ KN coupling, the two-nucleon mechanism (KNN -> Θ^+ N), estimated from the two-meson coupling of the pentaquark, provides the necessary additional kaon absorption to reconcile with data the systematically low theoretical K^+ nucleus reaction cross sections.

Cold, dense nuclear matter in a SU(2) parity doublet model

We study dense nuclear matter and the chiral phase transition in a SU(2) parity doublet model at zero temperature. The model is defined by adding the chiral partner of the nucleon, the N', to the linear sigma model, treating the mass of the N' as an unknown free parameter. The parity doublet model gives a reasonable description of the properties of cold nuclear matter, and avoids unphysical behaviour present in the standard SU(2) linear sigma model. If the N' is identified as the N'(1535), the parity doublet model shows a first order phase transition to a chirally restored phase at large densities, $ρ\approx 10 ρ_0$, defining the transition by the degeneracy of the masses of the nucleon and the N'. If the mass of the N' is chosen to be 1.2 GeV, then the critical density of the chiral phase transition is lowered to three times normal nuclear matter density, and for physical values of the pion mass, the first order transition turns into a smooth crossover.

Chiral approach to antikaon s- and p-wave interactions in dense nuclear matter

The properties of the antikaons in nuclear matter are investigated from a chiral unitary approach which incorporates the s- and p-waves of the ${\bar K}N$ interaction. To obtain the in-medium meson-baryon amplitudes we include, in a self-consistent way, Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies corrected by nuclear short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We pay special attention to investigating the validity of the on-shell factorization, showing that it cannot be applied in the evaluation of the in-medium corrections to the p-wave amplitudes. In nuclear matter at saturation energy, the $Λ$ and $Σ$ develop an attractive potential of about -30 MeV, while the $Σ^*$ pole remains at the free space value although its width gets sensibly increased to about 80 MeV. The antikaon also develops a moderate attraction that does not support the existence of very deep and narrow bound states, confirming the findings of previous self-consistent calculations.

D-mesons: In-medium effects at FAIR

The $D$-meson spectral density at finite temperature is obtained within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach. For the bare meson-baryon interaction, a separable potential is taken, whose parameters are fixed by the position and width of the $Λ_c (2593)$ resonance. The quasiparticle peak stays close to the free $D$-meson mass, indicating a small change in the effective mass for finite density and temperature. Furthermore, the spectral density develops a considerable width due to the coupled-channel structure. Our results indicate that the medium modifications for the $D$-mesons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at FAIR (GSI) will be dominantly on the width and not, as previously expected, on the mass.
