How many of the scaling trends in $pp$ collisions will be violated at sqrt{s_NN} = 14 TeV ? - Predictions from Monte Carlo quark-gluon string model

Multiplicity, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of hadrons produced both in inelastic and nondiffractive $pp$ collisions at energies from $\sqrt{s} = 200$\,GeV to 14\,TeV are studied within the Monte Carlo quark-gluon string model (QGSM). Good agreement with the available experimental data up to $\sqrt{s} = 13$\,TeV is obtained, and predictions are made for the collisions at top LHC energy $\sqrt{s} = 14$\,TeV. The model indicates that Feynman scaling and extended longitudinal scaling remain valid in the fragmentation regions, whereas strong violation of Feynman scaling is observed at midrapidity. The Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling in multiplicity distributions is violated at LHC also. The origin of both maintenance and violation of the scaling trends is traced to short range correlations of particles in the strings and interplay between the multistring processes at ultrarelativistic energies.

Anisotropic flow fluctuations in hydro-inspired freeze-out model for relativistic heavy ion collisions

The LHC data on event-by-event harmonic flow coefficients measured in PbPb collisions at center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair are analyzed and interpreted within the HYDJET++ model. To compare the model results with the experimental data the unfolding procedure is employed. The essentially dynamical origin of the flow fluctuations in hydro-inspired freeze-out approach has been established. It is shown that the simple modification of the model via introducing the distribution over spatial anisotropy parameters permits HYDJET++ to reproduce both elliptic and triangular flow fluctuations and related to it eccentricity fluctuations of the initial state at the LHC energy.

Angular dihadron correlations as interplay of elliptic and triangular flows

The hybrid model HYDJET++, which combines soft and hard components, is employed for the analysis of dihadron angular correlations measured in PbPb collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV. The model allows for study both individual contributions and mutual influence of lower flow harmonics, v_2 and v_3, on higher harmonics and dihadron angular correlations. It is shown that the typical structure called ridge in dihadron angular correlations in a broad pseudorapidity range could appear just as interplay of v_2 and v_3. Central, semi-central and semi-peripheral collisions were investigated. Comparison of model results with the experimental data on dihadron angular correlations is presented for different centralities and transverse momenta p_T.

Higher harmonics of azimuthal anisotropy in relativistic heavy ion collisions in HYDJET++ model

The LHC data on azimuthal anisotropy harmonics from PbPb collisions at center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair are analyzed and interpreted in the framework of the HYDJET++ model. The cross-talk of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ flow in the model generates both even and odd harmonics of higher order. Comparison with the experimental data shows that this mechanism is able to reproduce the $p_{\rm T}$ and centrality dependencies of quadrangular flow $v_4$, and also the basic trends for pentagonal $v_5$ and hexagonal $v_6$ flows.

Hexagonal flow v_6 as a superposition of elliptic v_2 and triangular v_3 flows

Partial contributions of elliptic v_2 and triangular v_3 flows to the hexagonal v_6 flow are studied within the HYDJET++ model for Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV. Scaling of the ratio v_6^{1/6}{Psi_2} / v_2^{1/2}{Psi_2} in the elliptic flow plane, Psi_2, is predicted in the range 1 < p_T < 4 GeV/c for semicentral and semiperipheral collisions. Jets increase this ratio by about 10% and also cause its rise at p_T > 3.5 GeV/c. The part of v_6 coming from v_2 is instantly increasing as the reaction becomes more peripheral, whereas the contribution of v_3 to v_6 drops. This behavior explains the experimentally observed increase of correlations between second and sixth harmonics and decrease of correlations between third and sixth harmonics with rising impact parameter $b$. Our study favors the idea that basic features of the hexagonal flow can be understood in terms of the interplay of elliptic and triangular flows.

Study of $ππ$ correlations at LHC and RHIC energies in $pp$ collisions within the quark-gluon string model

The Quark Gluon String Model (QGSM) reproduces well the global characteristics of the $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC, e.g., the pseudorapidity and transverse momenta distributions at different centralities. The main goal of this work is to employ the Monte Carlo QGSM for description of femtoscopic characteristics in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. The study is concentrated on the low multiplicity and multiplicity averaged events, where no collective effects are expected. The different procedures for fitting the one-dimensional correlation functions of pions are studied and compared with the space-time distributions extracted directly from the model. Particularly, it is shown that the double Gaussian fit reveals the contributions coming separately from resonances and from directly produced particles. The comparison of model results with the experimental data favors decrease of particle formation time with rising collision energy.

HYDJET++ simulations and reconstruction of the anisotropic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

The azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in heavy ion collisions is an important probe of quark-gluon plasma evolution at early stages. In the present paper the elliptic flow pattern in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=5.5 TeV is analyzed for different hadron species in the frameworks of HYDJET++ Monte-Carlo model. The influence of resonance decays on particle flow is investigated. The different methods of elliptic flow reconstruction are compared under LHC conditions.

Equation of state at FAIR energies and the role of resonances

Two microscopic models, UrQMD and QGSM, are used to extract the effective equation of state (EOS) of locally equilibrated nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions at energies from 11.6 AGeV to 160 AGeV. Analysis is performed for the fixed central cubic cell of volume V = 125 fm**3 and for the expanding cell that followed the growth of the central area with uniformly distributed energy. For all reactions the state of local equilibrium is nearly approached in both models after a certain relaxation period. The EOS has a simple linear dependence P/e = c_s**2 with 0.12 < c_s**2 < 0.145. Heavy resonances are shown to be responsible for deviations of the c_s**2(T) and c_s**2(mu_B) from linear behavior. In the T-mu_B and T-mu_S planes the EOS has also almost linear dependence and demonstrates kinks related not to the deconfinement phase transition but to inelastic freeze-out in the system.

Dynamical phase trajectories for relativistic nuclear collisions

Central collisions of gold nuclei are simulated by several existing models and the central net baryon density rho and the energy density eps are extracted at successive times, for beam kinetic energies of 5-40 GeV per nucleon. The resulting trajectories in the (rho, eps) phase plane are discussed from the perspective of experimentally exploring the expected first-order hadronization phase transition with the planned FAIR at GSI or in a low-energy campaign at RHIC.

Anisotropic flow of charged and identified hadrons in the quark-gluon string model for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

The pseudorapidity behaviour of the azimuthal anisotropy parameters v_1 and v_2 of inclusive charged hadrons and their dependence on the centrality has been studied in Au+Au collisions at full RHIC energy of sqrt(s) = 200 GeV within the microscopic quark-gluon string model. The QGSM simulation results for the directed flow v_1 show antiflow alignment within the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2 in a fair agreement with the experimental v_1(eta) data, but cannot reproduce the further development of the antiflow up to |eta| around 3.5. The eta dependence of the elliptic flow v_2 extracted from the simulations agrees well with the experimental data in the whole pseudorapidity range for different centrality classes. The centrality dependence of the integrated elliptic flow of charged hadrons in the QGSM almost coincides with the PHOBOS experimental distribution. The transverse momentum dependence of the elliptic flow of identified and inclusive charged hadrons is studied also. The model reproduces quantitatively the low p_T part of the distributions rather good, but underestimates the measured elliptic flow for transverse momenta p_T > 1 GeV/c. Qualitatively, however, the model is able to reproduce the saturation of the v_2(p_T) spectra with rising p_T as well as the crossing of the elliptic flow for mesons and baryons.

Elliptic flow at collider energies and cascade string models: The role of hard processes and multi-Pomeron exchanges

Centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum dependence of hadron elliptic flow is studied in Au+Au collisions at BNL RHIC energies within the microscopic quark-gluon string model. The QGSM predictions coincide well with the experimental data at $\sqrt{s}=130$ AGeV. Further investigations reveal that multi-Pomeron exchanges and hard gluon-gluon scattering in primary collisions, accompanied by the rescattering of hadrons in spatially anisotropic system, are the key processes needed for an adequate description of the data. These processes become essentially important for heavy-ion collisions at full RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV.

Chemical freeze-out parameters at RHIC from microscopic model calculations

The relaxation of hot nuclear matter to an equilibrated state in the central zone of heavy-ion collisions at energies from AGS to RHIC is studied within the microscopic UrQMD model. It is found that the system reaches the (quasi)equilibrium stage for the period of 10-15 fm/$c$. Within this time the matter in the cell expands nearly isentropically with the entropy to baryon ratio $S/A = 150 - 170$. Thermodynamic characteristics of the system at AGS and at SPS energies at the endpoints of this stage are very close to the parameters of chemical and thermal freeze-out extracted from the thermal fit to experimental data. Predictions are made for the full RHIC energy $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV. The formation of a resonance-rich state at RHIC energies is discussed.

Local equilibrium in heavy-ion collisions: Microscopic analysis of a central cell versus infinite matter

We study the local equilibrium in the central $V = 125$ fm$^3$ cell in heavy-ion collisions at energies from 10.7 AGeV (AGS) to 160 AGeV (SPS) calculated in the microscopic transport model. In the present paper the hadron yields and energy spectra in the cell are compared with those of infinite nuclear matter, as calculated within the same model. The agreement between the spectra in the two systems is established for times $t \geq 10$ fm/$c$ in the central cell. The cell results do not deviate noticeably from the infinite matter calculations with rising incident energy, in contrast to the apparent discrepancy with predictions of the statistical model (SM) of an ideal hadron gas. The entropy of this state is found to be very close to the maximum entropy, while hadron abundances and energy spectra differ significantly from those of the SM.

Transition to resonance-rich matter in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies

The equilibration of hot and dense nuclear matter produced in the central region in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV is studied within the microscopic transport model UrQMD. The pressure here becomes isotropic at $t \approx 5$ fm/c. Within the next 15 fm/c the expansion of the matter proceeds almost isentropically with the entropy per baryon ratio $S/A \approx 150$. During this period the equation of state in the $(P,ε)$-plane has a very simple form, $P=0.15 ε$. Comparison with the statistical model (SM) of an ideal hadron gas reveals that the time of $\approx 20$ fm/$c$ may be too short to attain the fully equilibrated state. Particularly, the fractions of resonances are overpopulated in contrast to the SM values. The creation of such a long-lived resonance-rich state slows down the relaxation to chemical equilibrium and can be detected experimentally.

Transverse momentum dependence of directed particle flow at 160 AGeV

The transverse momentum ($p_t$) dependence of hadron flow at SPS energies is studied. In particular, the nucleon and pion flow in S+S and Pb+Pb collisions at 160 AGeV is investigated. For simulations the microscopic quark-gluon string model (QGSM) is applied. It is found that the directed flow of pions $v_1(y, Δp_t)$ changes sign from a negative slope in the low-$p_t$ region to a positive slope at $p_t \geq 0.6$ GeV/c as recently also observed experimentally. The change of the flow behaviour can be explained by early emission times for high-$p_t$ pions. We further found that a substantial amount of high-$p_t$ pions are produced in the very first primary NN collisions at the surface region of the touching nuclei. Thus, at SPS energies high-$p_t$ nucleons seem to be a better probe for the hot and dense early phase of nuclear collisions than high-$p_t$ pions. Both, in the light and in the heavy system the pion directed flow $v_1(p_t, Δy)$ exhibits large negative values when the transverse momentum approaches zero, as also seen experimentally in Pb+Pb collisions. It is found that this effect is caused by nuclear shadowing. The proton flow, in contrary, shows the typical linear increase with rising $p_t$.

Equation of state of resonance-rich matter in the central cell in heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 AGeV

The equilibration of hot and dense nuclear matter produced in the central cell of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC ($\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV) energies is studied within a microscopic transport model. The pressure in the cell becomes isotropic at $t\approx 5$ fm/$c$ after beginning of the collision. Within the next 15 fm/$c$ the expansion of matter in the cell proceeds almost isentropically with the entropy per baryon ratio $S/A \approx 150$, and the equation of state in the $(P,ε)$ plane has a very simple form, $P=0.15ε$. Comparison with the statistical model of an ideal hadron gas indicates that the time $t \approx 20$ fm/c may be too short to reach the fully equilibrated state. Particularly, the creation of long-lived resonance-rich matter in the cell decelerates the relaxation to chemical equilibrium. This resonance-abundant state can be detected experimentally after the thermal freeze-out of particles.

Microscopic study of energy and centrality dependence of transverse collective flow in heavy-ion collisions

The centrality dependence of directed and elliptic flow in light and heavy systems of colliding nuclei is studied within two microscopic transport models at energies from 1 AGeV to 160 A GeV. The pion directed flow has negative slope in the midrapidity range irrespective of bombarding energy and mass number of the colliding ions. In contrast, the directed flow of nucleons vanishes and even develops antiflow in the midrapidity range in (semi)peripheral collisions at energies around 11.6 A GeV and higher. The origin of the disappearance of flow is linked to nuclear shadowing. Since the effect is stronger for a light system, it can be distinguished from the similar phenomenon caused by the quark-gluon plasma formation. In the latter case the disappearance of the flow due to the softening of the equation of state should be most pronounced in collisions of heavy ions. The centrality dependence of the elliptic flow shows that the maximum in the distribution is shifted to very peripheral events with rising incident energy, in accord with experimental data. This is an indication of the transition from baryonic to mesonic degrees of freedom in hot hadronic matter.

Global observables and secondary interactions in central Au+Au reactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV

The Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD) is used to study global observables in central reactions of Au+Au at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV (RHIC). Strong stopping governed by massive particle production is predicted if secondary interactions are taken into account. The underlying string dynamics and the early hadronic decoupling implies only small transverse expansion rates. However, rescattering with mesons is found to act as a source of pressure leading to additional flow of baryons and kaons, while cooling down pions.
