Average causal effect estimation via instrumental variables: the no simultaneous heterogeneity assumption

Background: Instrumental variables (IVs) can be used to provide evidence as to whether a treatment X has a causal effect on an outcome Y. Even if the instrument Z satisfies the three core IV assumptions of relevance, independence and the exclusion restriction, further assumptions are required to identify the average causal effect (ACE) of X on Y. Sufficient assumptions for this include: homogeneity in the causal effect of X on Y; homogeneity in the association of Z with X; and no effect modification (NEM). Methods: We describe the NO Simultaneous Heterogeneity (NOSH) assumption, which requires the heterogeneity in the X-Y causal effect to be mean independent of (i.e., uncorrelated with) both Z and heterogeneity in the Z-X association. This happens, for example, if there are no common modifiers of the X-Y effect and the Z-X association, and the X-Y effect is additive linear. We illustrate NOSH using simulations and by re-examining selected published studies. Results: When NOSH holds, the Wald estimand equals the ACE even if both homogeneity assumptions and NEM (which we demonstrate to be special cases of - and therefore stronger than - NOSH) are violated. Conclusions: NOSH is sufficient for identifying the ACE using IVs. Since NOSH is weaker than existing assumptions for ACE identification, doing so may be more plausible than previously anticipated.

Characterization of two SiPM arrays from Hamamatsu and Onsemi for liquid argon detector

Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), a new type of photosensor, is considered a substitute for traditional photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the next generation of dark matter and neutrino detectors, especially in noble gas detectors like liquid argon. However, the design of compact SiPM arrays and their cryogenic electronics that can work in liquid argon is barely developed. Thus, two candidate SiPM arrays from Hamamatsu and Onsemi were selected to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the design. In this work, we successfully developed a cryogenic electronics read-out system that connects and works with 1-inch 4$\times$4 SiPM arrays at 87~K. The power dissipation of amplifiers is less than 10 $μ$W/mm$^2$. Furthermore, multiply significant characteristics of both types of SiPM arrays were measured at liquid argon temperature, such as dark count rate (DCR), breakdown voltage (V${_{bd}}$), single photoelectron (SPE) performance, signal to noise ratio (SNR) and correlated signal probability.

Design, integration, and test of the scientific payloads on-board the HERMES constellation and the SpIRIT mission

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) is a space-borne mission based on a constellation of nano-satellites flying in a low-Earth orbit (LEO). The six 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized instruments hosting a hybrid Silicon Drift Detector/GAGG:Ce scintillator photodetector system sensitive to X-rays and gamma-rays. HERMES will probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), ensuring a fast transient localization (with arcmin-level accuracy) in a field of view of several steradians exploiting the triangulation technique. With a foreseen launch date in late 2023, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. Moreover, the HERMES constellation will operate in conjunction with the Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal (SpIRIT) 6U CubeSat, to be launched in early 2023. SpIRIT is an Australian-Italian mission for high-energy astrophysics that will carry in a Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) an actively cooled HERMES detector system payload. On behalf of the HERMES collaboration, in this paper we will illustrate the HERMES and SpIRIT payload design, integration and tests, highlighting the technical solutions adopted to allow a wide-energy-band and sensitive X-ray and gamma-ray detector to be accommodated in a 1U Cubesat volume.

Mild solutions to the Cauchy problem for time-space fractional Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system

This paper investigates the Cauchy problem of the time-space fractional Keller-Segel-Navier- Stokes model, which can describe both memory effect and Lévy process of the system. The local existence and global existence in Lebesgue space are obtained by means of Banach fixed point theorem and Banach implicit function theorem, respectively. In addition, the regularities of local and global mild solutions are improved in fractional homogeneous Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, some properties of mild solutions including mass conservation, decay estimates, stability and self-similarity are established.

Dynamical masses of the primary Be star and the secondary sdB star in the single-lined binary kappa Dra (B6 IIIe)

Because many classical Be stars may owe their nature to mass and angular-momentum transfer in a close binary, the present masses, temperatures, and radii of their components are of high interest for comparison to stellar evolution models. Kappa Dra is a 61.5-day single-lined binary with a B6 IIIe primary. With the CHARA Array instruments MIRC/MIRC-X and MYSTIC, we detected the secondary at (approximately photospheric) flux ratios of 1.49 +- 0.10% and 1.63 +- 0.09% in the H and K band, respectively. From a large and diverse optical spectroscopic database only the radial velocity curve of the Be star could be extracted. However, employing the parallaxes from Hipparcos and Gaia, which agree within their nominal 1-sigma errors, we could derive the total mass and found component masses of 3.65 +- 0.48 Msun and 0.426 +- 0.043 Msun for the Be star and the companion, respectively. Previous cross-correlation of the observed far-UV spectrum with sdO spectral model templates had not detected a companion belonging to the hot O-type subdwarf (sdO) population known from ~20 earlier-type Be stars. Guided by our full 3D orbital solution, we found a strong cross-correlation signal for a stripped subdwarf B-type companion (far-UV flux ratio of 2.3 +- 0.5%), enabling the first firm characterization of such a star, and making kappa Dra the first mid- to late-type Be star with a directly-observed subdwarf companion.

Constraints on sub-GeV dark matter boosted by cosmic rays from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present new constraints on light dark matter boosted by cosmic rays (CRDM) using the 205.4 kg day data of the CDEX-10 experiment conducted at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The Monte Carlo simulation package CJPL\_ESS was employed to evaluate the Earth shielding effect. Several key factors have been introduced and discussed in our CRDM analysis, including the contributions from heavier CR nuclei than proton and helium, the inhomogeneity of CR distribution, and the impact of the form factor in the Earth attenuation calculation. Our result excludes the dark matter--nucleon elastic scattering cross-section region from $1.7\times 10^{-30}$ to $10^{-26}~\rm cm^2$ for dark matter of 10 keV$/c^2$ to 1 GeV$/c^2$.

Probing the Mpc-scale environment of hyperluminous infrared galaxies at 2<z<4

Protoclusters are important for studying how halo mass and stellar mass assemble in the early universe. Finding signposts of such over-dense regions is a popular method to identify protocluster candidates. Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs), are expected to reside in overdense regions with massive halos. We study the Mpc-scale environment of the largest HLIRG sample to date and investigate whether they predominantly live in overdense regions. We first explore the surface density of Herschel 250 $μ$m sources around HLIRGs and compare with that around random positions. Then, we compare the spatial distribution of neighbours around HLIRGs with that around randomly selected galaxies using a deep IRAC-selected catalogue with good-quality photometric redshifts. We also use a redshift-matched quasar sample and submillimeter galaxy (SMG) sample to validate our method, as previous clustering studies have measured the host halo masses of these populations. Finally, we adopt a Friends of Friends (FOF) algorithm to seek (proto)clusters that host HLIRGs. We find that HLIRGs tend to have more bright star-forming neighbours (with 250 $μ$m flux density >10 mJy) within 100$\arcsec$ projected radius than a random galaxy at a 3.7$σ$ significance. In our 3D analysis, we find relatively weak excess of IRAC-selected sources within 3 Mpc around HLIRGs compared with random galaxy neighbours, mainly influenced by photometric redshift uncertainty and survey depth. We find a more significant difference (at a 4.7$σ$ significance) in the number of Low Frequency Array (LOFAR)-detected neighbours in the deepest EN1 field. HLIRGs at 3 < z < 4 show stronger excess compared to HLIRGs at 2 < z < 3, consistent with cosmic downsizing. Finally, we select and present a list of 30 most promising protocluster candidates for future follow-up observations.

Interplay of itinerant electrons and Ising moments in a hybrid honeycomb quantum magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$

The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$. Based on the experimental data, a magnetic field temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below ${T_{\rm N}=2.97 \pm 0.02}\ \rm K$ Tm$^{3+}$ moments order antiferromagnetically in zero field. We found that the Tm$^{3+}$ ions form a pseudo-doublet ground state with the Ising-like moments lying normal to the two-dimensional honeycomb layers. Application of a magnetic field along the easy axis gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order in favor of an induced ferromagnetic state above the critical field ${B_c=0.92 \pm 0.05}\ \rm T$. In the vicinity of $B_c$, a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations was observed. The quantum Ising nature of the local moments and the coupling to itinerant electrons are discussed.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{76}$Ge with a Natural Broad Energy Germanium Detector

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$νββ$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$νββ$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0ν}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

Detection of quasi-periodic micro-structure in three millisecond pulsars with the Large European Array for Pulsars

We report on the detection of quasi-periodic micro-structure in three millisecond pulsars (MSPs), PSRs J1022+1001, J2145-0750 and J1744-1134, using high time resolution data acquired with the Large European Array for Pulsars at a radio frequency of 1.4 GHz. The occurrence rate of quasi-periodic micro-structure is consistent among pulses with different peak flux densities. Using an auto-correlation analysis, we measure the periodicity and width of the micro-structure in these three pulsars. The detected micro-structure from PSRs J1022+1001 and J1744-1134 is often highly linearly polarised. In PSR J1022+1001, the linear polarisation position angles of micro-structure pulses are in general flat with a small degree of variation. Using these results, we further examine the frequency and rotational period dependency of micro-structure properties established in previous work, along with the angular beaming and temporal modulation models that explains the appearance of micro-structure. We also discuss a possible link of micro-structure to the properties of some of the recently discovered fast radio bursts which exhibit a very similar emission morphology.

Simulations of scrape-off layer power width for EAST H-mode plasma and ITER 15 MA baseline scenario by 2D electrostatic turbulence code

The scrape-off layer power width (λ_q) is an important parameter for characterizing the divertor heat loads. Many experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies have been performed in recent years. In this paper, a 2D electrostatic turbulence code, BOUT-HESEL, has been upgraded to simulate H-mode plasmas for the first time. The code is validated against the previous implementation and the experiments. The simulated λ_q is found to agree quite well with the Eich scaling for the EAST H-mode discharge. The code is utilized to simulate the ITER 15MA baseline scenario. The ITER simulation reveals that the radial particle/heat transports are dominated by blobby transports, and predicts λ_{q,ITER} = 9.6 mm, which is much larger than the prediction by the Eich scaling. Based on the EAST modified cases, an estimated HESEL H-mode scaling, λ_q=0.51R_c^1.1B_t^(-0.3)q_95^1.1 is proposed. This scaling predicts λ_{q,ITER} = 9.3 mm, which agrees surprisingly well with that for the ITER case. A further investigation combined with the basic parameters in the database of the Eich scaling shows that the missing positive scaling dependence on the machine size (Rc) in the Eich scaling appears to be shaded by the negative scaling dependence on the toroidal magnetic field (Bt) for current devices. This is however not the case for ITER, explaining why simulations in recent studies and in this paper can reproduce the Eich scaling for current devices, but predict a much larger λ_q for ITER. According to the simulation results, the strong positive scaling dependence of λ_q on Rc is due to a combination of slowing down the parallel heat transports by increasing the parallel connection length and the enhancement of the radial ExB turbulent heat transports when the machine size is increased.

Boosting-GNN: Boosting Algorithm for Graph Networks on Imbalanced Node Classification

The Graph Neural Network (GNN) has been widely used for graph data representation. However, the existing researches only consider the ideal balanced dataset, and the imbalanced dataset is rarely considered. Traditional methods such as resampling, reweighting, and synthetic samples that deal with imbalanced datasets are no longer applicable in GNN. This paper proposes an ensemble model called Boosting-GNN, which uses GNNs as the base classifiers during boosting. In Boosting-GNN, higher weights are set for the training samples that are not correctly classified by the previous classifier, thus achieving higher classification accuracy and better reliability. Besides, transfer learning is used to reduce computational cost and increase fitting ability. Experimental results indicate that the proposed Boosting-GNN model achieves better performance than GCN, GraphSAGE, GAT, SGC, N-GCN, and most advanced reweighting and resampling methods on synthetic imbalanced datasets, with an average performance improvement of 4.5%

A new look at local ultraluminous infrared galaxies: the atlas and radiative transfer models of their complex physics

We present the ultraviolet to submillimetre spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the HERschel Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxy Survey (HERUS) sample of 42 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and fit them with a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code using the CYprus models for Galaxies and their NUclear Spectra (CYGNUS) radiative transfer models for starbursts, active galactic nucleus (AGN) tori and host galaxy. The Spitzer IRS spectroscopy data are included in the fitting. Our bayesian SED fitting method takes comparable time to popular energy balance methods but it is more physically motivated and versatile. All HERUS galaxies harbor high rates of star formation but we also find bolometrically significant AGN in all of the galaxies of the sample. We estimate the correction of the luminosities of the AGN in the ULIRGs due to the anisotropic emission of the torus and find that it could be up to a factor of $\sim10$ for nearly edge-on tori. We present a comparison of our results with the smooth torus model of Fritz et al. and the two-phase models of Siebenmorgen et al. and SKIRTOR. We find that the CYGNUS AGN torus models fit significantly better the SEDs of our sample compared to all other models. We find no evidence that strong AGN appear either at the beginning or end of a starburst episode or that starbursts and AGN affect each other. IRAS 01003-2238 and Mrk 1014 show evidence for dual AGN in their SED fits suggesting a minimum dual AGN fraction in the sample of 5%.

Cosmic evolution of low-excitation radio galaxies in the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey Deep Fields

Feedback from low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) plays a key role in the lifecycle of massive galaxies in the local Universe; their evolution, and the impact of these active galactic nuclei on early galaxy evolution, however, remain poorly understood. We use a sample of 10481 LERGs from the first data release of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey Deep Fields, covering $\sim$ 25 deg$^2$, to present the first measurement of the evolution of the radio luminosity function (LF) of LERGs out to $z\sim2.5$; this shows relatively mild evolution. We split the LERGs into those hosted by quiescent and star-forming galaxies, finding a new dominant population of LERGs hosted by star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. The incidence of LERGs in quiescent galaxies shows a steep dependence on stellar-mass out to $z \sim1.5$, consistent with local Universe measurements of accretion occurring from cooling of hot gas haloes. The quiescent-LERGs dominate the LFs at $z<1$, showing a strong decline in space density with redshift, tracing that of the available host galaxies, while there is an increase in the characteristic luminosity. The star-forming LERG LF increases with redshift, such that this population dominates the space densities at most radio-luminosities by $z \sim 1$. The incidence of LERGs in star-forming galaxies shows a much weaker stellar-mass dependence, and increases with redshift, suggesting a different fuelling mechanism compared to their quiescent counterparts, potentially associated with the cold gas supply present in the star-forming galaxies.

Discovery of Nine Super Li-rich Unevolved Stars from the LAMOST Survey

Based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) medium-resolution spectroscopic survey (MRS), we report the discovery of nine super Li-rich unevolved stars with A(Li) $>$ 3.8 dex. These objects show unusually high levels of lithium abundances up to three times higher than the meteoritic value of 3.3 dex, which indicates that they must have experienced a history of lithium enrichment. It is found that seven of our program stars are fast rotators with $vsini>9$ km\,s$^{-1}$, which suggests that the accretion of circumstellar matter may be the main contributor to the lithium enhancement of these unevolved stars, however, other sources cannot be excluded.

A Strategic Approach to Advance Magnet Technology for Next Generation Colliders

Colliders are built on a foundation of superconducting magnet technology that provides strong dipole magnets to maintain the beam orbit and strong focusing magnets to enable the extraordinary luminosity required to probe physics at the energy frontier. The dipole magnet strength plays a critical role in dictating the energy reach of a collider, and the superconducting magnets are arguably the dominant cost driver for future collider facilities. As the community considers opportunities to explore new energy frontiers, the importance of advanced magnet technology - both in terms of magnet performance and in the magnet technology's potential for cost reduction - is evident, as the technology status is essential for informed decisions on targets for physics reach and facility feasibility.

A class of semilinear elliptic equations on lattice graphs

In this paper, we study the semilinear elliptic equation of the form \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu+a(x)|u|^{p-2}u-b(x)|u|^{q-2}u=0 \end{eqnarray*} on lattice graphs $\mathbb{Z}^{N}$, where $N\geq 2$ and $2\leq p<q<+\infty$. By the Brézis-Lieb lemma and concentration compactness principle, we prove the existence of positive solutions to the above equation with constant coefficients $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ and the decomposition of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the functional with variable coefficients, which tend to some constants $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ at infinity, respectively.

Studies of the Earth shielding effect to direct dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Dark matter direct detection experiments mostly operate at deep underground laboratories. It is necessary to consider shielding effect of the Earth, especially for dark matter particles interacting with a large cross section. We analyzed and simulated the Earth shielding effect for dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with a simulation package, CJPL Earth Shielding Simulation code (CJPL\_ESS), which is applicable to other underground locations. The further constraints on the $χ$-N cross section exclusion regions are derived based on the studies with CDEX experiment data.
