Dynamical model of Praesepe and its tidal tails

Context. The dynamical evolution of open clusters in the tidal field of the Milky Way and the feeding of the disc field star population depend strongly on the initial conditions at the time of gas removal. Detailed dynamical models tailored to individual clusters help us understand the role of open clusters in the Galactic disc evolution. Aims. We present a detailed dynamical model of Praesepe, which reproduces the mass profile, the stellar mass function, and the mass segregation observed with the help of Gaia EDR3 data. Based on this model, we investigate the kinematic properties of the tidal tail stars in detail. Methods. We used direct N-body simulations along the eccentric orbit of Praesepe in the tidal field of the Milky Way, where each particle represents one star. The initial mass and size of the cluster, the dynamical state, and the initial mass function were adapted to reach the best-fitting model. Based on this model and a comparison model on a circular orbit, we analysed the stars in the tidal tails in terms of density, angular momentum, and orbit shapes. Results. Praesepe can be well reproduced by a cluster model with concentrated star formation in a supervirial state after instantaneous gas expulsion, adopting a global star formation efficiency of 17%. About 75% of the initially 7500 MSol are lost in the violent relaxation phase, and the observed mass segregation can be understood by two-body relaxation. We find that the self-gravity of the tail stars is the dominant force altering the angular momentum of the tail stars. For a typical star, the total change after escaping is about 1.6 kpc km/s. This corresponds to an offset in guiding radius of 7 pc, where tail stars contribute up to 70% to the alteration. The total radial shift of the orbit of the cluster in the Galactic plane can exceed 50 pc. This effect is not a result of the eccentricity of the orbit.

Stochastic evolution equations in UMD Banach spaces

We discuss existence, uniqueness, and space-time Hölder regularity for solutions of the parabolic stochastic evolution equation dU(t) = (AU(t) + F(t,U(t))) dt + B(t,U(t)) dW_H(t), t\in [0,\Tend], U(0) = u_0, where $A$ generates an analytic $C_0$-semigroup on a UMD Banach space $E$ and $W_H$ is a cylindrical Brownian motion with values in a Hilbert space $H$. We prove that if the mappings $F:[0,T]\times E\to E$ and $B:[0,T]\times E\to \mathscr{L}(H,E)$ satisfy suitable Lipschitz conditions and $u_0$ is $\F_0$-measurable and bounded, then this problem has a unique mild solution, which has trajectories in $C^ł([0,T];\D((-A)^θ)$ provided $λ\ge 0$ and $θ\ge 0$ satisfy $ł+θ<\frac12$. Various extensions of this result are given and the results are applied to parabolic stochastic partial differential equations.

Ito's formula in UMD Banach spaces and regularity of solutions of the Zakai equation

Using the theory of stochastic integration for processes with values in a UMD Banach space developed recently by the authors, an Ito formula is proved which is applied to prove the existence of strong solutions for a class of stochastic evolution equations in UMD Banach spaces. The abstract results are applied to prove regularity in space and time of the solutions of the Zakai equation.

Stochastic integration in UMD Banach spaces

In this paper we construct a theory of stochastic integration of processes with values in $\mathcal{L}(H,E)$, where $H$ is a separable Hilbert space and $E$ is a UMD Banach space (i.e., a space in which martingale differences are unconditional). The integrator is an $H$-cylindrical Brownian motion. Our approach is based on a two-sided $L^p$-decoupling inequality for UMD spaces due to Garling, which is combined with the theory of stochastic integration of $\mathcal{L}(H,E)$-valued functions introduced recently by two of the authors. We obtain various characterizations of the stochastic integral and prove versions of the Itô isometry, the Burkholder--Davis--Gundy inequalities, and the representation theorem for Brownian martingales.

The $H^{\infty}-$calculus and sums of closed operators

We develop a very general operator-valued functional calculus for operators with an $H^{\infty}-$calculus. We then apply this to the joint functional calculus of two commuting sectorial operators when one has an $H^{\infty}$calculus. Using this we prove theorem of Dore-Venni type on sums of commuting sectorial operators and apply our results to the problem of $L_p-$maximal regularity. Our main assumption is the R-boundedness of certain sets of operators, and therefore methods from the geometry of Banach spaces are essential here. In the final section we exploit the special Banach space structure of $L_1-$spaces and $C(K)-$spaces, to obtain some more detailed results in this setting.
