Ion-Scale Waves Regulated by Plasma Beta and Cross Helicity: Observational Evidence for the Helicity Barrier in Imbalanced Solar Wind Turbulence

Ion-scale waves are believed to play an important role in heating of the solar corona and wind, though their generation mechanism remains unclear. Based on Parker Solar Probe observations, this Letter investigates the occurrence of ion-scale waves in the near-Sun solar wind with heliocentric distances between 0.1 and 0.2 au. Results show that the occurrence rate of left-handed polarized waves significantly depends on the plasma beta ($\beta$) and cross helicity ($\sigma_c$). The occurrence rate rapidly increases with decreasing $\beta$ and increasing $\sigma_c$. Overall, the occurrence rate exceeds 45$\%$ when $\beta<0.2$ and $\sigma_c > 0.7$ are satisfied. These observations are consistent with the direct predictions of the helicity barrier theory that suggests the generation of ion cyclotron waves via imbalanced magnetized turbulence.

Divertor shaping with neutral baffling as a solution to the tokamak power exhaust challenge

Exhausting power from the hot fusion core to the plasma-facing components is one of the biggest challenges in fusion energy. The MAST Upgrade tokamak uniquely integrates strong containment of neutrals within the exhaust area (divertor) with extreme divertor shaping capability. By systematically altering the divertor shape, this study shows the strongest evidence to date that long-legged divertors with a high magnetic field gradient (total flux expansion) deliver key power exhaust benefits without adversely impacting the hot fusion core. These benefits are already achieved with relatively modest geometry adjustments that are more feasible to integrate in reactor designs. Benefits include reduced target heat loads and improved access to, and stability of, a neutral gas buffer that 'shields' the target and enhances power exhaust (detachment). Analysis and model comparisons shows these benefits are obtained by combining multiple shaping aspects: long-legged divertors have expanded plasma-neutral interaction volume that drive reductions in particle and power loads, while total flux expansion enhances detachment access and stability. Containing the neutrals in the exhaust area with physical structures further augments these shaping benefits. These results demonstrate strategic variation in the divertor geometry and magnetic topology is a potential solution to one of fusion's biggest challenges: power exhaust.

Parametric scaling of power exhaust in EU-DEMO alternative divertor simulations

Investigations of parametric scaling of power exhaust in the alternative divertor configuration (ADC) SOLPS-ITER simulation database of the EU-DEMO are conducted and compared to predictions based on the Lengyel model. The Lengyel model overpredicts the necessary argon concentrations for LFS divertor detachment by about a factor of 5-10 relative to the SOLPS-ITER simulations. Therefore, while the Lengyel model predicts that plasmas with accetable divertor heat loads in EU-DEMO would exceed the tolerable upstream impurity concentrations by a large margin, there are several SOLPS-ITER solutions within an acceptable operational space. The SOLPS-ITER simulations indicate that, unlike assumed by the standard Lengyel model, there are significant heat dissipation mechanisms other than argon radiation, such as cross-field transport, that reduce the role of argon radiation by a factor of 2 to 3. Furthermore, the Lengyel model assumes that the radiation front is powered by parallel heat conduction only, which tends to lead to a narrow radiation front as the radiative efficiency increases strongly with reducing thermal conductivity. As a result, the radiative volume and total impurity radiation are suppressed for a given impurity concentration. However, the SOLPS-ITER simulations indicate that other mechanisms, such as cross-field transport, can compete with parallel heat conduction within the radiative front and increase the radiative volume. Due to these findings, usage of the standard Lengyel model for analyzing scaling between divertor conditions and configurations for devices such as EU-DEMO is strongly discouraged.

Superconductivity and phase diagrams of CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ single crystals

Members of the CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ series have been synthesized in single crystalline form and characterized by elemental analysis, thermodynamic and transport measurements. These measurements show that the superconducting transition temperature decreases monotonically and is finally suppressed below 1.8 K. For $x$-values greater than 0.016, signatures of a magnetic transition can be detected in both thermodynamic and transport measurements in which kink-like features allow for the determination of the transition temperature, $T^*$, that increases as Mn substitution increases. A temperature-composition ($T$-$x$) phase diagram is constructed, revealing a half-dome of superconductivity with the magnetic transition temperature, $T^*$, appearing near 26 K for $x$ $\sim$ 0.017 and rising slowly up to 33 K for $x$ $\sim$ 0.036. Specific heat data are used to track the jump in specific heat at $T_c$; The CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ data does not follow the scaling of $\Delta$$C_{p}$ with $T_{c}^3$ as many of the other Fe-based superconducting systems do. Elastoresistivity coefficients, $2m_{66}$ and $m_{11}-m_{12}$, as a function of temperature are also measured. $2m_{66}$ and $m_{11}-m_{12}$ are qualitatively similar to CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$. This may indicate that the magnetic order in Mn substituted system may be still the same as CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$. A clear change in $H^\prime_{c2}$($T$)/$T_c$, where $H^\prime_{c2}$($T$) is d$H_{c2}$($T$)/d$T$, at $x$ $\sim$ 0.015 is observed and probably is related to change of the Fermi surface due to magnetic order. Coherence lengths and the London penetration depths are also calculated based on $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ data. Coherence lengths as the function of $x$ also shows the changes near $x$ = 0.015.

Effects of external pressure on the narrow gap semiconductor Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$

Here we report the magnetic and electronic properties of recently discovered Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$. At ambient pressure, Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ presents a semiconducting behavior with an activation gap of 74(1)~meV. At 136~K, a sudden increase of the electrical resistivity and a peak in specific heat are consistent with a charge density wave transition. At low temperatures, antiferromagnetic order of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions occurs below $T_{\rm N} = 4.0$~K with a magnetic hard axis along the $c$-axis and a $\Gamma_{6} = |\pm1/2\rangle$ doublet ground state. The application of external pressure strongly suppresses the charge density wave order, which is completely suppressed above 0.8(1)~GPa, and induces a metallic ground state. No evidence for superconductivity is detected above 2~K. Conversely, the antiferromagnetic state is favored by pressure, reaching a transition temperature of 5.3~K at 3.8(1)~GPa. Notably, the resistivity anomaly characterizing the antiferromagnetic order changes with increasing pressure, indicating that two different magnetic phases might be present in Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ under pressure. This change in ordering appears to be associated to the crossing of the $T_{\rm CDW}$ and $T_{\rm N}$ lines.

EVN observations of eleven GHz-Peaked-Spectrum radio sources at 2.3/8.4GHz

We present results of EVN observations of eleven GHz-Peaked-Spectrum (GPS) radio sources at 2.3/8.4 GHz. These sources are from the classical ''bright'' GPS source samples with peak flux densities $>$ 0.2 Jy and spectral indices $α< -0.2$ ($S \propto ν^{-α}$) in the optically thick regime of their convex spectra. Most of the target sources did not have VLBI images at the time this project started. The aim of the work is to find Compact Symmetric Object (CSO) candidates from the ''bright'' GPS samples. These CSOs play a key role in understanding the very early stage of the evolution of individual radio galaxies. The reason for investigating GPS source samples is that CSO candidates are more frequently found among this class of radio sources. In fact both classes, GPS and CSO, represent a small fraction of the flux limited and flat-spectrum samples like PR+CJ1 (PR: Pearson-Readhead survey, CJ1: the first Caltech--Jodrell Bank survey) and CJF (the Caltech--Jodrell Bank flat spectrum source survey) with a single digit percentage progressively decreasing with decreasing flux density limit. Our results, with at least 3, but possibly more CSO sources detected among a sample of 11, underline the effectiveness of our approach. The three confirmed CSO sources (1133+432, 1824+271, and 2121$-$014) are characterized by a symmetric pair of resolved components, each with steep spectral indices. Five further sources (0144+209, 0554$-$026, 0904+039, 0914+114 and 2322$-$040) can be considered likely CSO candidates. The remaining three sources (0159+839, 0602+780 and 0802+212) are either of core-jet type or dominated by a single component at both frequencies.

VLBI-experiments on research of solar wind plasma

This work devotes to investigations of solar corona and solar wind plasma by the method of radio probing with using of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). We performed the theoretical calculation of power spectrum of interferometric response to radio source emission, passed through the turbulent medium. Data of theoretical analysis are compared with results of international VLBI experiments on investigations of solar wind plasma. The observations were realized in 1998, 1999, 2000 with participation of radio telescopes, included at Low Frequency VLBI Network (LFVN): Bear Lakes (RT-64, Russia), Puschino (RT-22, Russia), Urumqi (RT-25, China), Noto (RT-32, Italy), Shanghai (RT-25, China) and others. Preprocessing was carried out with using of S2 correlator at Penticton (Canada). Post processing of experimental data was performed at RRI (Russia) and was aimed to obtain value of solar wind velocity and index of spatial spectrum of electron density fluctuations.
