On the origin of the short range NN repulsion

We calculate S-wave singlet and triplet NN phase shifts stemming from the short-range flavor-spin hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks using the resonating group method approach. A strong short-range repulsion is found in both waves. A fair comparison is performed between the traditional picture, relying on the colour-magnetic interaction, and the present one, relying on the Goldstone boson exchange dynamics. It is shown that the latter one induces essentially stronger repulsion, which is a very welcome feature. We also study a sensitivity of phase shifts and wave function to extention from the one-channel to three-channel resonating group method approximation.

Parity doublets and chiral symmetry restoration in baryon spectrum

It is argued that an appearance of the near parity doublets in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum is an evidence for the chiral symmetry restoration in the regime where a typical momentum of quarks is around the chiral symmetry restoration scale. At high enough baryon excitation energy the nontrivial gap solution, which signals the chiral symmetry breaking regime, disappears and the chiral symmetry should be restored. Thus one observes a phase transition in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum. The average kinetic energy of the constituent quarks in this region is just around the critical one $3T_c$.

Is there diquark clustering in the nucleon?

It is shown that the instanton-induced interaction in qq pairs, iterated in t-channel, leads to a meson-exchange interactions between quarks. In this way one can achieve a simultaneous understanding of low-lying mesons, baryons and the nuclear force. The discussion is general and does not necessarily rely on the instanton-induced interaction. Any nonperturbative gluonic interaction between quarks, which is a source of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and explains the $π$ - $ρ$ mass splitting, will imply an effective meson exchange picture in baryons. Due to the (anti)screening there is a big difference between the initial 't Hooft interaction and the effective meson-exchange interaction. It is demonstrated that the effective meson-exchange interaction, adjusted to the baryon spectrum, does not bind the scalar diquark and does not induce any significant quark-diquark clustering in the nucleon because of the nontrivial role played by the Pauli principle.

The Strangeness Magnetic Moment of the Proton in the Chiral Quark Model

The strangeness magnetic moment of the proton is shown to be small in the chiral quark model. The dominant loop contribution is due to kaons. The K^* loop contributions are proportional to the difference between the strange and light constituent quark masses or $m_{K^*}^{-2}$ and therefore small. The loop fluctuations that involve radiative transitions between K^* mesons and kaons are small, when the cut-off scale in the loops is taken to be close to the chiral symmetry restoration scale. The net loop amplitude contribution to the strangeness magnetic moment of the proton is about -0.05, which falls within the uncertainty range of the experimental value.

Origins of the baryon spectrum

I begin with a key problem of light and strange baryon spectroscopy which suggests a clue for our understanding of underlying dynamics. Then I discuss spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD, which implies that at low momenta there must be quasiparticles - constituent quarks with dynamical mass, which should be coupled to other quasiparticles - Goldstone bosons. Then it is natural to assume that in the low-energy regime the underlying dynamics in baryons is due to Goldstone boson exchange (GBE) between constituent quarks. Using as a prototype of the microscopical quark-gluon degrees of freedom the instanton-induced 't Hooft interaction I show why the GBE is so important. When the 't Hooft interaction is iterated in the qq t-channel it inevitably leads to a pole which corresponds to GBE. This is a typical antiscreening behavior: the interaction is represented by a bare vertex at large momenta, but it blows up at small momenta in the channel with GBE quantum numbers, explaining thus a distinguished role of the latter interaction in the low-energy regime. I show how the explicitly flavour-dependent short-range part of the GBE interaction between quarks, perhaps in combination with the vector-meson exchange interaction, solves a key problem of baryon spectroscopy and present spectra obtained in a simple analytical calculation as well as in exact semirelativistic three-body approach.

Chiral quarks, chiral limit, nonanalytic terms and baryon spectroscopy

It is shown that the principal pattern in baryon spectroscopy, which is associated with the flavor-spin dependent hyperfine interaction, is due to the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD and persists in the chiral limit. All corrections, which are associated with a finite quark (Goldstone boson) mass are suppressed by the factor $(μ/Λ_χ$)^2 and higher.

The short-range baryon-baryon interaction in a chiral constituent quark model

The previous analysis of the short-range $NN$ repulsion originating from the Goldstone boson exchange hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks is revisited. We study in which respects the repulsion depends on the radial form of the spin-spin quark-quark force. We show that while the radial form affects the structure of the 6Q wave function, the short-range repulsion in the $NN$ system persists in any case. We extend our analysis to other $YN$ and $YY$ (flavor octet-octet) systems and demonstrate that the flavor-spin hyperfine interaction implies a short-range repulsion in these B=2 systems as well.

Pionic Fluctuations of Constituent Quarks

Pion loop fluctuations of the constituent u and d quarks are shown to give only a minute contribution to the intrinsic charge radius of the neutron, under the assumption that the pion-quark coupling constant has its conventional value, with a cut-off scale of the order of 1.0 GeV. The contribution from the pion loops to the anomalous magnetic moment of the neutron represents a small ($\sim$ 12-14%) increase over of the static quark model value.

Comment on "Chiral Corrections in Hadron Spectroscopy"

It is shown that the principal pattern in baryon spectroscopy, which is associated with the flavor-spin dependent hyperfine interaction, is due to the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD and thus cannot be addressed by chiral perturbation theory, which is based on the explicit chiral symmetry breaking.

Baryons in a chiral constituent quark model

In the low-energy regime light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of constituent quarks with confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by Goldstone bosons as well as by vector and scalar mesons. The flavor-spin structure and sign of the short-range part of the spin-spin force reduces the $SU(6)_{FS}$ symmetry down to $SU(3)_F \times SU(2)_S$, induces hyperfine splittings and provides correct ordering of the lowest states with positive and negative parity. There is a cancellation of the tensor force from pseudoscalar- and vector-exchanges in baryons. The spin-orbit interactions from $ρ$-like and $ω$-like exchanges also cancel each other in baryons while they produce a big spin-orbit force in NN system. A unified description of light and strange baryon spectra calculated in a semirelativistic framework is presented. It is demonstrated that the same short-range part of spin-spin interaction between the constituent quarks induces a strong short-range repulsion in $NN$ system when the latter is treated as $6Q$ system. Thus one can achieve a simultaneous understanding of a baryon structure and baryon-baryon interaction in the low-energy regime.

Light and strange baryons, two-baryon systems and the chiral symmetry of QCD

Beyond the scale of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of three constituent quarks with confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by Goldstone bosons between the constituent quarks. The flavor-spin structure and sign of the short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction reduces the $SU(6)_{FS}$ symmetry down to $SU(3)_F \times SU(2)_S$, induces hyperfine splittings and provides correct ordering of the lowest states with positive and negative parity. A unified description of light and strange baryon spectra calculated in a semirelativistic framework is presented. It is demonstrated that the same short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange between the constituent quarks induces a strong short-range repulsion in $NN$ system when the latter is treated as $6Q$ system. Similar to the $NN$ system there should be a short-range repulsion in other $NY$ and $YY$ two-baryon systems. We also find that the compact 6Q system with the "H-particle" quantum numbers lies a few hundreds MeV above the $ΛΛ$ threshold. It then suggests that the deeply bound H-particle should not exist.

How the "H-particle" unravels the quark dynamics

It is shown that the short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction between the constituent quarks which explains baryon spectroscopy and the short-range repulsion in the NN system induces a strong short-range repulsion in the flavour-singlet state of the $ΛΛ$ system with $J^P=0^+$. It then suggests that a deeply bound H-particle should not exist. We also compare our approach with other models employing different hyperfine interactions between quarks in the nonperturbative regime of QCD.

Unified description of light- and strange-baryon spectra

We present a chiral constituent quark model for light and strange baryons providing a unified description of their ground states and excitation spectra. The model relies on constituent quarks and Goldstone bosons arising as effective degrees of freedom of low-energy QCD from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. The spectra of the three-quark systems are obtained from a precise variational solution of the Schrödinger equation with a semirelativistic Hamiltonian. The theoretical predictions are found in close agreement with experiment.

Baryons, their interactions and the chiral symmetry of QCD

An implication of the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is that at low energy and resolution there appear quasiparticles - constituent quarks and Goldstone bosons. Thus, light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of three constituent quarks with confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by Goldstone bosons between the constituent quarks. We show how the flavor-spin structure and sign of the short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction reduces the $SU(6)_{FS}$ symmetry down to $SU(3)_F \times SU(2)_S$, induces hyperfine splittings and provides correct ordering of the lowest states with positive and negative parity. We present a unified description of light and strange baryon spectra calculated in a semirelativistic framework. It is demonstrated that the same short-range part of Goldstone boson exchange also induces strong short-range repulsion in $NN$ system when the latter is treated as $6Q$ system. Thus, all main ingredients of $NN$ interaction are implied by the chiral constituent quark model since the long- and intermediate-range attraction appears in the present framework due to pion and correlated two-pion exchanges between quarks belonging to different nucleons. We also find a very strong short-range repulsion in $ΛΛ$ system with $J^P=0^+$. It then suggests that the compact H-particle should not exist.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in a Chiral Constituent Quark Model

We study the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction in a chiral constituent quark model by diagonalizing a Hamiltonian comprising a linear confinement and a Goldstone boson exchange interaction between quarks. The six-quark harmonic oscillator basis contains up to two excitation quanta. We show that the highly dominant configuration is $\mid s^4p^2[42]_O [51]_{FS}>$ due to its specific flavour-spin symmetry. Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation we find a strong effective repulsion at zero separation between nucleons in both $^3S_1$ and $^1S_0$ channels. The symmetry structure of the highly dominant configuration implies the existence of a node in the S-wave relative motion wave function at short distances. The amplitude of the oscillation of the wave function at short range will be however strongly suppressed. We discuss the mechanism leading to the effective short-range repulsion within the chiral constituent quark model as compared to that related with the one-gluon exchange interaction.

Effective Q-Q Interactions in Constituent Quark Models

We study the performance of some recent potential models suggested as effective interactions between constituent quarks. In particular, we address constituent quark models for baryons with hybrid Q-Q interactions stemming from one-gluon plus meson exchanges. Upon recalculating two of such models we find them to fail in describing the N and Δspectra. Our calculations are based on accurate solutions of the three-quark systems in both a variational Schrödinger and a rigorous Faddeev approach. It is argued that hybrid {Q-Q} interactions encounter difficulties in describing baryon spectra due to the specific contributions from one-gluon and pion exchanges together. In contrast, a chiral constituent quark model with a Q-Q interaction solely derived from Goldstone-boson exchange is capable of providing a unified description of both the N and Δspectra in good agreement with phenomenology.

The Charm and Bottom Hyperons in a Chiral Quark Model

The spectrum of the C=1 hyperons is well described by the constituent quark model, if the fine structure interaction between the light and strange quarks is mediated by the $SU(3)_F$ octet of light pseudoscalar mesons, which are the Goldstone bosons of the hidden approximate chiral symmetry of QCD. With the addition of a phenomenological flavor exchange interaction of the same form between the light and the charm quarks to describe the $Σ_c-Σ_c^*$ and $Ξ_c^s-Ξ_c^*$ splittings, the splittings between the C=1 states fall within 10-30 MeV of the empirical values. Predictions are presented for the lowest negative parity excited states and the magnetic moments as well. Corresponding predictions for the B=-1 hyperon states are also given.

Baryons in chiral constituent quark model

Beyond the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking scale light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of three constituent quarks with an effective confining interaction and a flavor-spin chiral interaction that is mediated by the octet of Goldstone bosons (pseudoscalar mesons) between the constituent quarks. One cannot exclude, however, the possibility that this flavor-spin interaction has an appreciable vector- and higher meson exchange component.
