A Revisit of the Two-Pole Caustic Model for GeV Light Curves of Gamma-Ray Pulsars

The GeV light curve of a pulsar is an important probe to detect acceleration regions in its magnetosphere. Motivated by the recent reports on the observations of pulsars by {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), we restudy the two-pole caustic model and revise it to investigate the properties of the light curves in the GeV band. In the revised model, although acceleration gaps can extend from the star surface to the light cylinder along near the last open field lines, the extension of the gaps along the azimuthal direction is limited because of photon-photon pair production process. In such gaps, high-energy photons are emitted uniformly and tangentially to the field lines but cannot be efficiently produced along these field lines where the distances to the null charge surface are larger than $\sim0.9$ times of the distance of the light cylinder, and the effective azimuth extension of the gaps is about $230^\circ$. The model is applied to the four pulsars Vela, PSR J1028-5819, PSR J0205+6449, and PSR J2021+3651 whose light curves obtained with {\it Fermi} have been recently released. The model is successful in reproducing the general feature of the light curves for the four pulsars, and the radial distances of the radio pulse for the four pulsars are estimated.

Electronic Structure, Localization and Spin-State Transition in Cu-substituted FeSe: Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Se

We report density functional studies of the Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Se alloy done using supercell and coherent potential approximation methods. Magnetic behavior was investigated using the disordered local moment approach. We find that Cu occurs in a nominal $d^{10}$ configuration and is highly disruptive to the electronic structure of the Fe sheets. This would be consistent with a metal insulator transition due to Anderson localization. We further find a strong cross over from a weak moment itinerant system to a local moment magnet at $x \approx 0.12$. We associate this with the experimentally observed jump near this concentration. Our results are consistent with the characterization of this concentration dependent jump as a transition to a spin-glass.

Multicolor Photometry of the Galaxy Cluster A98: Substructures and Star Formation Properties

An optical photometric observation with the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) multicolor system is carried out for A98 (z=0.104), a galaxy cluster with two large enhancements in X-ray surface brightness. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) covering 15 intermediate bands are obtained for all sources detected down to V ~ 20 mag in a field of $58' \times 58'$. After the star-galaxy separation by the color-color diagrams, a photometric redshift technique is applied to the galaxy sample for further membership determination. The color-magnitude relation is taken as a further restriction of the early-type cluster galaxies. As a result, a list of 198 faint member galaxies is achieved. Based on newly generated sample of member galaxies, the dynamical substructures, A98N, A98S, and A98W, are investigated in detail. A separate galaxy group, A98X, is also found to the south of main concentration of A98, which is gravitationally unbound to A98. For 74 spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies, the environmental effect on the star formation histories is found. The bright galaxies in the core region are found to have shorter time scales of star formation, longer mean stellar ages, and higher metallicities of interstellar medium, which can be interpreted in the context of hierarchical cosmological scenario.

Breakdown of the N=0 Quantum Hall State in graphene: two insulating regimes

We studied the unusual Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) near the charge neutrality point (CNP) in high-mobility graphene sample for magnetic fields up to 18 T. We observe breakdown of the delocalized QHE transport and strong increase in resistivities $ρ_{xx},|ρ_{xy}|$ with decreasing Landau level filling for $ν< 2$, where we identify two insulating regimes. For $1 \gtrsim |ν| \gtrsim 1/2$ we find an exponential increase of $ρ_{xx,xy} \sim e^{a(H-H_c)}$ within the range up to several resistance quanta $R_K$, while the Hall effect gradually disappears, consistent with the Hall insulator (HI) with local transport. Then, at $ν\approx 1/2$ a cusp in $ρ_{xx}(H)$ followed by an onset of even faster growth indicates transition to a collective insulator (CI) state. The likely candidate for this state is a pinned Wigner crystal.

Magnetically Torqued Neutrino-Dominated Accretion Flows for Gamma-ray Bursts

Recent observations and theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) favor the central engine model of a Kerr black hole (BH) surrounded by a magnetized neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). The magnetic coupling between the BH and disk through a large-scale closed magnetic field exerts a torque on the disk, and transports the rotational energy from the BH to the disk. We investigate the properties of the NDAF with this magnetic torque. For a rapid spinning BH, the magnetic torque transfers enormous rotational energy from BH into the inner disk. There are two consequences: (i) the luminosity of neutrino annihilation is greatly augmented; (ii) the disk becomes thermally and viscously unstable in the inner region, and behaves S-Shape of the surface density versus accretion rate. It turns out that magnetically torqued NDAF can be invoked to interpret the variability of gamma-ray luminosity. In addition, we discuss the possibility of restarting the central engine to produce the X-ray flares with required energy.

The multi-band nonthermal emission from the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946

Nonthermal X-rays and very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays have been detected from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, and especially the recent observations with the \textit{Suzaku} satellite clearly reveal a spectral cutoff in the X-ray spectrum, which directly relates to the cutoff of the energy spectrum of the parent electrons. However, whether the origin of the VHE $γ$-rays from the SNR is hadronic or leptonic is still in debate. We studied the multi-band nonthermal emission from RX J1713.7-3946 based on a semi-analytical approach to the nonlinear shock acceleration process by including the contribution of the accelerated electrons to the nonthermal radiation. The results show that the multi-band observations on RX J1713.7-3946 can be well explained in the model with appropriate parameters and the TeV $γ$-rays have hadronic origin, i.e., they are produced via proton-proton (p-p) interactions as the relativistic protons accelerated at the shock collide with the ambient matter.

Electronic Structure, Magnetism and Superconductivity of Layered Iron Compounds

The layered iron superconductors are discussed using electronic structure calculations. The four families of compounds discovered so far, including Fe(Se,Te) have closely related electronic structures. The Fermi surface consists of disconnected hole and electron cylinders and additional hole sections that depend on the specific material. This places the materials in proximity to itinerant magnetism, both due to the high density of states and due to nesting. Comparison of density functional results and experiment provides strong evidence for itinerant spin fluctuations, which are discussed in relation to superconductivity. It is proposed that the intermediate phase between the structural transition and the SDW transition in the oxy-pnictides is a nematic phase.

Doping and Temperature Dependence of Raman Scattering of NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) Superconductor

Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.

Investigation for the puzzling abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements in the ultra metal-poor star: CS 30322-023

The s-enhanced and very metal-poor star CS 30322-023 shows a puzzling abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements, i.e. several neutron-capture elements such as Ba, Pb etc. show enhancement, but other neutron-capture elements such as Sr, Eu etc. exhibit deficient with respect to iron. The study to this sample star could make people gain a better understanding of s- and r-process nucleosynthesis at low metallicity. Using a parametric model, we find that the abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements could be best explained by a star that was polluted by an AGB star and the CS 30322-023 binary system formed in a molecular cloud which had never been polluted by r-process material. The lack of r-process material also indicates that the AGB companion cannot have undergone a type-1.5 supernova, and thus must have had an initial mass below 4.0M$_\odot$, while the strong N overabundance and the absence of a strong C overabundance indicate that the companion's initial mass was larger than 2.0M$_\odot$. The smaller s-process component coefficient of this star illustrates that there is less accreted material of this star from the AGB companion, and the sample star should be formed in the binary system with larger initial orbital separation where the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) mechanism can not work.

Negative Energy and Angular Momentum Modes of Thin Accretion Disks

This work derives the linearized equations of motion, the Lagrangian density, the Hamiltonian density, and the canonical angular momentum density for general perturbations [$\propto \exp(imϕ)$ with $m=0,\pm 1,..$] of a geometrically thin self-gravitating, homentropic fluid disk including the pressure. The theory is applied to ``eccentric,'' $m=\pm 1$ perturbations of a geometrically thin Keplerian disk. We find $m=1$ modes at low frequencies relative to the Keplerian frequency. Further, it shown that these modes can have negative energy and negative angular momentum. The radial propagation of these low frequency $m=1$ modes can transport angular momentum away from the inner region of a disk and thus increase the rate of mass accretion. Depending on the radial boundary conditions there can be discrete low-frequency, negative-energy, $m=1$ modes.

The Possible $J^{PC}I^G=2^{++}2^+$ State X(1600)

The interesting state X(1600) with $J^{PC}I^G=2^{++}2^+$ can't be a conventional $q \bar q$ meson in the quark model. Using a mixed interpolating current with different color configurations, we investigate the possible existence of X(1600) in the framework of QCD finite energy sum rules. Our results indicate that both the "hidden color" and coupled channel effects may be quite important in the multiquark system. We propose several reactions to look for this state.

Self-organization effects and light amplification of collective atomic recoil motion in a harmonic trap

Self-organization effects related to light amplification in the collective atomic recoil laser system with the driven atoms confined in a harmonic trap are investigated further. In the dispersive parametric region, our study reveals that the spontaneously formed structures in the phase space contributes an important role to the light amplification of the probe field under the atomic motion being modified by the trap.

Isotropic three-dimensional left-handed meta-materials

We investigate three-dimensional left-handed and related meta-materials based on a fully symmetric multi-gap single-ring SRR design and crossing continuous wires. We demonstrate isotropic transmission properties of a SRR-only meta-material and the corresponding left-handed material which possesses a negative effective index of refraction due to simultaneously negative effective permeability and permittivity. Minor deviations from complete isotropy are due to the finite thickness of the meta-material.

Gamma-ray Emission Properties from Mature Pulsars in the Galaxy and in the Gould Belt

We study the $γ$-ray emission properties of pulsars by using a new self-consistent outer gap model. The outer gap can exist in pulsars with age over million years old if the effect of magnetic inclination angle as well as the average properties of the outer gap are considered. The mature $γ$-ray pulsars, whose ages are between 0.3 to 3 million years old, are able to move up to high galactic latitude. Moreover, their $γ$-ray luminosity are weaker and their spectra are softer than those of younger $γ$-ray pulsars in the galactic plane significantly. We use a Monte Carlo method to simulate the statistical properties of $γ$-ray pulsars in the Galaxy as well as in the Gould Belt. We find that $γ$-ray pulsars located at $\mid b \mid < 5^{\circ}$ and located at $\mid b \mid > 5^{\circ}$ have very different properties. High galactic latitude $γ$-ray pulsars are dominated by mature pulsars with longer periods, weaker fluxes and softer spectra. If the pulsar birth rate in the Galaxy and the Gould Belt are $\sim 10^{-2}yr^{-1}$ and $\sim 2\times 10^{-5}yr^{-1}$ respectively, there are 42 and 35 radio-quiet $γ$-ray pulsars for $\mid b \mid < 5^{\circ}$ and $\mid b \mid > 5^{\circ}$ respectively. Radio-quiet $γ$-ray pulsars from the Gould Belt are 2 and 13 for $\mid b \mid < 5^{\circ}$ and $\mid b \mid > 5^{\circ}$ respectively. We suggest that a good fraction of unidentified EGRET $γ$-ray sources may be these radio-quiet $γ$-ray pulsars. Furthermore $γ$-ray pulsars located at $\mid b \mid > 5^{\circ}$ satisfies $L_γ \propto L^β_{sd}$ whereas $L_γ \propto L^δ_{sd}$ for $γ$-ray pulsars in the galactic plane, where $β\sim 0.6$ and $δ\sim 0.3$ respectively.

Gamma-ray Luminosity and Death Lines of Pulsars with Outer Gaps

We re-examine the outer gap size by taking the geometry of the dipole magnetic field into account. Furthermore, we also consider that instead of taking the gap size at half of the light cylinder radius to represent the entire outer gap it is more appropriate to average the entire outer gap size over the distance. When these two factors are considered, the derived outer gap size f is not only the function of period P and magnetic field B of the neutron star, but also the function of the average radial distance to the neutron star . We use this new outer gap model to study $γ$-ray luminosity of pulsars, and to study the death lines of $γ$-ray emission of the pulsars. Our model can predict the $γ$-ray luminosity of individual pulsar if its $P, B$ and $α$ are known. Since different pulsars have different $α$, this explains why some $γ$-ray pulsars have very similar $P$ and $B$ but have very different $γ$-ray luminosities. In determining the death line of $γ$-ray pulsars, we have used a new criterion based on concrete physical reason. In estimate of the fractional size of the outer gap, two possible X-ray fields are considered: (i) X-rays are produced by the neutron star cooling and polar cap heating, and (ii)X-rays are produced by the bombardment of the relativistic particles from the outer gap on the stellar surface. Since it is very difficult to measure $α$ in general, we use a Monte Carlo method to simulate the properties of $γ$-ray pulsars in our galaxy. We find that this new outer gap model predicts many more weak $γ$-ray pulsars. For all simulated $γ$-ray pulsars with self-sustained outer gaps, $γ$-ray luminosity $L_γ$ satisfies $L_γ\propto L^δ_{sd}$; where the value of $δ$ depends on the ensitivity of the $γ$-ray detector.

Thermal expansion of the magnetorefrigerant Gd5(Si,Ge)4

We report thermal expansion measurements carried out on a single-crystal of the giant magnetocaloric effect material Gd5(Si0.43Ge0.57)4. At the magneto-structural phase transition at T_0 ~ 240 K, large steps in the relative length change DELTAL/L along the principle crystallographic axes are observed. The single-step behaviour in DELTAL/L indicates that the magnetic and structural phase transition occur at one and the same temperature. The specific heat was measured in order to determine the latent heat. Using the Clausius-Clapeyron relation we extract a hydrostatic pressure dependence dT_0/dp of 3.2+-0.2 K/kbar. The pressure effect is strongly anisotropic as follows from the anisotropy in the linear thermal expansion. Uniaxial pressure along the a-axis enhances T_0, while uniaxial pressure in the bc-plane suppresses T_0.

Coherent coupling dynamics in a quantum dot microdisk laser

Luminescence intensity autocorrelation (LIA) is employed to investigate coupling dynamics between (In,Ga)As QDs and a high-Q (~7000) resonator with ultrafast time resolution (150 fs), below and above the lasing threshold at T = 5 K. For QDs resonant and non-resonant with the cavity we observe both a six-fold enhancement and a 0.77 times reduction of the spontaneous emission rate, respectively. In addition, LIA spectroscopy reveals the onset of coherent coupling at the lasing threshold through qualitative changes in the dynamic behavior and a tripling of the resonant QD emission rate.

Radio Luminosities and Classificatory Criteria of BL Lacertae Objects

Using the sample of radio selected BL Lacertae objects (RBLs) and X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects (XBLs) presented by Sambruna et al. (1996), we calculated the luminosities of radio, optical and X-ray of each source and made the statistical analysis among the luminosities at different wave-bands, broad-band spectral indices from radio to X-ray ($α_{\rm rx}$) and peak frequencies ($ν_p$). Our results are as follows: (i) there is a positive correlation between radio luminosity $L_{\rm r}$ and $α_{\rm rx}$ and a negative correlation between $L_{\rm r}$ and $ν_p$. High-energy peak BL Lacs (HBLs) and low-energy peak BL Lacs (LBLs) can be distinguished very well, the dividing lines are probably those of $\log {L_{\rm r}}=43.25$ (erg/sec) and $α_{\rm rx}>$(or $\leq $)0.75 for $L_{\rm r}$ - $α_{\rm rx}$ plot and those of $\log {L_{\rm r}}\leq 43.25$ (erg/sec) and $\log {ν_p}>14.7$ for the $L_{\rm r}$ - $ν_p$ plot; (ii) there is a weak positive correlation between optical luminosity $L_o$ and $α_{\rm rx}$ and a negatively weak correlation between $L_{\rm o}$ and $ν_p$; (iii) there is no correlation between X-ray luminosity $L_X$ and $α_{\rm rx}$ or between $L_X$ and $ν_p$. From our analysis, we find that synchrotron radiation is the main X-ray radiation mechanism for HBLs while inverse Compton scattering for LBLs.
