Coordinated Multicell Multicast Beamforming Based on Manifold Optimization

Multicast beamforming is a key technology for next-generation wireless cellular networks to support high-rate content distribution services. In this paper, the coordinated downlink multicast beamforming design in multicell networks is considered. The goal is to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of all users under individual base station power constraints. We exploit the fractional form of the objective function and geometric properties of the con-straints to reformulate the problem as a parametric manifold optimization program. Afterwards we propose a low-complexity Dinkelbach-type algorithm combined with adaptive exponential smoothing and Riemannian conjugate gradient iteration, which is guaranteed to converge. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing SDP-based method and DC-programming-based method and achieves near-optimal performance.

The Betelgeuse Project: Constraints from Rotation

In order to constrain the evolutionary state of the red supergiant Betelgeuse, we have produced a suite of models with ZAMS masses from 15 to 25 Msun in intervals of 1 Msun including the effects of rotation. The models were computed with the stellar evolutionary code MESA. For non-rotating models we find results that are similar to other work. It is somewhat difficult to find models that agree within 1 sigma of the observed values of R, Teff and L, but modestly easy within 3 sigma uncertainty. Incorporating the nominal observed rotational velocity, ~15 km/s, yields significantly different, and challenging, constraints. This velocity constraint is only matched when the models first approach the base of the red supergiant branch (RSB), having crossed the Hertzsprung gap, but not yet having ascended the RSB and most violate even generous error bars on R, Teff and L. Models at the tip of the RSB typically rotate at only ~0.1 km/s, independent of any reasonable choice of initial rotation. We discuss the possible uncertainties in our modeling and the observations, including the distance to Betelgeuse, the rotation velocity, and model parameters. We summarize various options to account for the rotational velocity and suggest that one possibility is that Betelgeuse merged with a companion star of about 1 Msun as it ascended the RSB, in the process producing the ring structure observed at about 7' away. A past coalescence would complicate attempts to understand the evolutionary history and future of Betelgeuse.

Tunneling into thin superconducting films: interface-induced quasiparticle lifetime reduction

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of superconducting thin lanthanum films grown on a normal metal tungsten substrate reveal an extraordinarily large broadening of the coherence peaks. The observed broadening corresponds to very short electron-like quasiparticle lifetimes in the tunneling process. A thorough analysis considering the different relaxation processes reveals that the dominant mechanism is an efficient quasiparticle relaxation at the interface between the superconducting film and the underlying substrate. This process is of general relevance to scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies on thin superconducting films and enables measurements of film thicknesses via a spectroscopic method.

Non-magnetic ground state of Ni adatoms on Te-terminated bismuth chalcogenide topological insulators

We report on the quenching of single Ni adatom moments on Te-terminated Bi2Te2Se and Bi2Te3 topological insulator surfaces. The effect becomes manifested as a missing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism for resonant L3,2 transitions into partially filled Ni 3d states of occupancy n_d = 9.2. On the basis of a comparative study of Ni and Fe using scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations we are able to relate the element specific moment formation to a local Stoner criterion. While Fe adatoms form large spin moments of m_s = 2.54 mu_B with out-of-plane anisotropy due to a sufficiently large density of states at the Fermi energy, Ni remains well below an effective Stoner threshold for local moment formation. With the Fermi level remaining in the bulk band gap after adatom deposition, non-magnetic Ni and preferentially out-of-plane oriented magnetic Fe with similar structural properties on Bi2Te2Se surfaces constitute a perfect platform to study off-on effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking on topological surface states.

Superconductivity of lanthanum revisited: enhanced critical temperature in the clean limit

The thickness dependence of the superconducting energy gap $Δ_{\rm{La}}$ of double hexagonally close packed (dhcp) lanthanum islands grown on W(110) is studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, from the bulk to the thin film limit. Superconductivity is suppressed by the boundary conditions for the superconducting wavefunction at the surface and W/La interface, leading to a linear decrease of the critical temperature $T_c$ as a function of the inverse film thickness. For thick, bulk-like films, $Δ_{\rm{La}}$ and $T_c$ are 40% larger as compared to literature values of dhcp La measured by other techniques. This finding is reconciled by examining the effects of surface contamination as probed by modifications of the surface state, suggesting that the large $T_c$ originates in the superior purity of the samples investigated here.

Giant magnetoresistance and spin Seebeck coefficient in zigzag a-graphyne nanoribbons

We investigate the spin-dependent electric and thermoelectric properties of ferromagnetic zigzag-graphyne nanoribbons (ZGNRs) using the density-functional theory combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. A giant magnetoresistance is obtained in the pristine even-width ZGNRs and can be as high as 10e6 %. However, for the doped systems, a large magnetoresistance behavior may appear in the odd-width ZGNRs rather than the even-width ones. This suggests that the magnetoresistance can be manipulated in a wide range by the dopants on edges of ZGNRs. Another interesting phenomenon is that in the B- and N-doped even-width ZGNRs the spin Seebeck coefficient is always larger than the charge Seebeck coefficient, and a pure-spin-current thermospin device can be achieved at specific temperatures.

Comparing the Host Galaxies of Type Ia, Type II and Type Ibc Supernovae

We compare the host galaxies of 902 supernovae, including SNe Ia, SNe II and SNe Ibc, which are selected by cross-matching the Asiago Supernova Catalog with the SDSS Data Release 7. We further selected 213 galaxies by requiring the light fraction of spectral observations $>$15%, which could represent well the global properties of the galaxies. Among them, 135 galaxies appear on the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram, which allows us to compare the hosts in terms of star-forming, AGNs (including composites, LINERs and Seyfert 2s) and "Absorp" (their related emission-lines are weak or non-existence) galaxies. The diagrams related to parameters D$_n$(4000), H$δ_A$, stellar masses, SFRs and specific SFRs for the SNe hosts show that almost all SNe II and most of SNe Ibc occur in SF galaxies, which have a wide range of stellar mass and low D$_n$(4000). The SNe Ia hosts as SF galaxies follow similar trends. A significant fraction of SNe Ia occurs in AGNs and Absorp galaxies, which are massive and have high D$_n$(4000). The stellar population analysis from spectral synthesis fitting shows that the hosts of SNe II have a younger stellar population than hosts of SNe Ia. These results are compared with those of the 689 comparison galaxies where the SDSS fiber captures less than 15% of the total light. These comparison galaxies appear biased towards higher 12+log(O/H) ($\sim$0.1dex) at a given stellar mass. Therefore, we believe the aperture effect should be kept in mind when the properties of the hosts for different types of SNe are discussed.

Screening and atomic-scale engineering of the potential at a topological insulator surface

The electrostatic behavior of a prototypical three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$(111) is investigated by a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of the distribution of Rb atoms adsorbed on the surface. The positively charged ions are screened by both free electrons residing in the topological surface state as well as band bending induced quantum well states of the conduction band, leading to a surprisingly short screening length. Combining a theoretical description of the potential energy with STM-based atomic manipulation, we demonstrate the ability to create tailored electronic potential landscapes on topological surfaces with atomic-scale control.

Attenuation length measurements of liquid scintillator with LabVIEW and reliability evaluation of the device

The attenuation length measuring device was constructed by using oscilloscope and LabVIEW for signal acquisition and processing. The performance of the device has been tested with a variety of ways, the test results show that the set-up has a good stability and high precision (sigma/mean reached 0.4 percent). Besides, the accuracy of the measurement system will decrease by about 17 percent if a filter is used. The attenuation length of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) was measured as 15.10 plus or minus 0.35 m where Gd-LS was heavily used in Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment. In addition, one method based on the Beer-Lambert law was proposed to investigate the reliability of the measurement device, the R-square reached 0.9995. Moreover, three purification methods for Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) production were compared in the experiment.

A study of thinner-THGEM, with some applications

THGEMs (THick Gas Electron Multiplier) of varying thickness, hole diameter and hole pitch have been studied. For a thinner-THGEM of thickness 0.2 mm, with hole diameter 0.2 mm, pitch 0.2 mm and narrow (5-10 μm) rim, the performance of gain versus high voltage with different gas mixtures have been studied using 5.9 keV X-rays. In general, a gain of around 3\times10^3 was obtained with a single board in Ar/iC4H10, and gains higher than 10^4 were obtained in Ne mixture at lower voltage. The dependence of the energy resolution on the drift and induction electric fields was measured and an energy resolution of 15.9% was obtained. A curved thinner-THGEM chamber with one-dimensional readout has been assembled for use in the diffraction studies at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). A cosmic-ray muon hodoscope based on thinner-THGEM was developed as a teaching experiment for the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS).

Deposition of La2Zr2O7 Film by Chemical Solution Deposition

La2Zr2O7 (LZO) formation of bulk powders and of films by Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) process have been studied using propionates. The treatment involved a one step cycle in the reducing forming gas (Ar-5%H2) to be compatible with Ni-5at%W RABITS. Large amount of residual carbon was found in LZO powders formed in these conditions (10 wt %). The volume fraction of the cube texture in LZO films on Ni-5at%w RABITS was found to be a function of the speed of the gas flown above sample. This phenomenon is discussed in considering the C deposited from the carbon-containing gases emitted during the pyrolysis of the precursor. Using proper conditions (950 ^\circC and the speed of gas of 6.8\times10^{-2} m/s), LZO films with good surface crystallinity could be obtained on Ni-5at%W RABITS as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, electron backscattered diffraction and RHEED. The existence of residual carbon in oxide films is a common question to films deposited by CSD processes under reducing condition.

Genuine tripartite entanglement monotone of $(2\otimes 2\otimes n)-$ dimensional systems

A genuine tripartite entanglement monotone is presented for $(2\otimes 2\otimes n)$-dimensional tripartite pure states by introducing a new entanglement measure for bipartite pure states. As an application, we consider the genuine tripartite entanglement of the ground state of the exactly solvable isotropic spin-1/2 chain with three-spin interaction. It is shown that the singular behavior of the genuine tripartite entanglement exactly signals a quantum phase transition.

Quasi-stationary criticality of the Order-Parameter of the d=3 Random-Field Ising Antiferromagnet Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2: A Synchrotron X-ray Scattering Study

The critical exponent beta =0.17(1) for the three-dimensional random-field Ising model (RFIM) order parameter upon zero-field cooling (ZFC) has been determined using extinction-free magnetic x-ray scattering techniques for Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2. This result is consistent with other exponents determined for the RFIM in that Rushbrooke scaling is satisfied. Nevertheless, there is poor agreement with equilibrium computer simulations, and the ZFC results do not agree with field-cooling (FC) results. We present details of hysteresis in Bragg scattering amplitudes and line shapes that help elucidate the effects of thermal cycling in the RFIM, as realized in dilute antiferromagnets in an applied field. We show that the ZFC critical-like behavior is consistent with a second-order phase transitions, albeit quasi-stationary rather than truly equilibrium in nature, as evident from the large thermal hysteresis observed near the transition.

The Entanglement in Anisotropic Heisenberg XYZ Chain with inhomogeneous magnetic field

The thermal entanglement of a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg $XYZ$ chain under an inhomogeneous magnetic field b is studied. It is shown that when inhomogeneity is increased to certain value, the entanglement can exhibit a larger revival than that of less values of b. The property is both true for zero temperature and a finite temperature. The results also show that the entanglement and critical temperature can be increased by increasing inhomogeneous exteral magnetic field.

Engineering atom-atom thermal entanglement via two-photon process

We study the system that two atoms simultaneously interact with a single-mode thermal field via different couplings and different spontaneous emission rates when two-photon process is involved. It is found that we indeed can employ the different couplings to produce the atom-atom thermal entanglement in two-photon process. The different atomic spontaneous emission rates are also utilizable in generating thermal entanglement. We also investigate the effect of the cavity leakage. To the initial atomic state $|ee> ,$a slight leakage can relieve the restriction of interaction time and we can obtain a large and steady entanglement.

The dissipation of the system and the atom in two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model with degenerate atomic levels

The method of perturbative expansion of master equation is employed to study the dissipative properties of system and of atom in the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) with degenerate atomic levels. The numerical results show that the degeneracy of atomic levels prolongs the period of entanglement between the atom and the field. The asymptotic value of atomic linear entropy is apparently increased by the degeneration. The amplitude of local entanglement and disentanglement is suppressed. The better the initial coherence property of the degenerate atom, the larger the coherence loss.

Entangling Two-Atom Through Cooperative Interaction Under Stimulated Emission

We discuss the generation of two-atom entanglement inside a resonant microcavity under stimulated emission (STE) interaction. The amount of entanglement is shown based on different atomic initial state. For each kind of intial state, we obtain the entanglement period and the entanglement critical point, which are found to deeply depend on driving field density. In case of atomic state $| ee >$, the entanglement can be induced due to STE. In case of atomic state $| eg >$, there is a competition between driving field indued entanglement and STE induced entanglement. When two atoms are initially in $| gg >$, we can find a lumbar region where STE increases the amount and period of entanglement.
