Study of Z Boson Pair Production in e+e- Collisions at LEP at \sqrt{s}=189 GeV

The pair production of Z bosons is studied using the data collected by the L3 detector at LEP in 1998 in e+e- collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. All the visible final states are considered and the cross section of this process is measured to be 0.74 +0.15 -0.14 (stat.) +/- 0.04 (syst.) pb. Final states containing b quarks are enhanced by a dedicated selection and their production cross section is found to be 0.18 +0.09 -0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) pb. Both results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits on anomalous couplings between neutral gauge bosons are derived from these measurements.

Search for Charged Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV

A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb^-1. Higgs decays into a charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are considered. The observed events are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 65.5 GeV on the charged Higgs mass is derived at 95 % confidence level, independent of the decay branching ratio Br(H^{+/-} -> tau nu).

Search for Low Scale Gravity Effects in e+e- Collisions at LEP

Recent theories propose that quantum gravity effects may be observable at LEP energies via gravitons that couple to Standard Model particles and propagate into extra spatial dimensions. The associated production of a graviton and a photon is searched for as well as the effects of virtual graviton exchange in the processes: e+e- -> gamma gamma, ZZ, WW, mu mu, tau tau, qq and ee No evidence for this new interaction is found in the data sample collected by the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 183 GeV. Limits close to 1 TeV on the scale of this new scenario of quantum gravity are set.

Measurement of the Spectroscopy of Orbitally Excited B Mesons at LEP

We measure the masses, decay widths and relative production rate of orbitally excited B mesons using 1.25 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the L3 detector. B-meson candidates are inclusively reconstructed and combined with charged pions produced at the primary event vertex. An excess of events above the expected background in the Bπmass spectrum in the region 5.6-5.8 GeV is interpreted as resulting from the decay B_u,d^** -> B^(*)π, where B_u,d^** denotes a mixture of l=1 B-meson states containing a u or a d quark. A fit to the mass spectrum yields the masses and decay widths of the B_1^* and B_2^* spin states, as well as the branching fraction for the combination of l=1 states. In addition, evidence is presented for the existence of an excited B-meson state or mixture of states in the region 5.9-6.0 GeV.

Measurement of Mass and Width of the W Boson at LEP

We report on measurements of the mass and total decay width of the W boson with the L3 detector at LEP. W-pair events produced in $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ interactions between 161 GeV and 183 GeV centre-of-mass energy are selected in a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 76.7 pb$^{-1}$. Combining all final states in W-pair production, the mass and total decay width of the W boson are determined to be $\mathrm{M_W}=80.61\pm0.15$ GeV and $Γ_{\mathrm{W}}=1.97\pm0.38$ GeV, respectively.

Measurement of an Elongation of the Pion Source in Z Decays

We measure Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign charged pion pairs in hadronic Z decays with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in three dimensions in the longitudinal center-of-mass system. The pion source is found to be elongated along the thrust axis with a ratio of transverse to longitudinal radius of $0.81\pm 0.02 ^{+0.03}_{-0.19}$.

Formation of the $η_c$ in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP

The two-photon width $Γ_{γγ}$ of the $η_c$ meson has been measured with the L3 detector at LEP. The $η_c$ is studied in the decay modes $π^+π^-π^+π^-$, $π^+π^-$K$^+$K$^-$, K$_s^0$K$^\pmπ^\mp$, K$^+$K$^-π^{0}$, $π^+π^-η$, $π^+π^-η'$, and $ρ^+ρ^-$ using an integrated luminosity of 140 pb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 91$ GeV and of 52 pb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 183$ GeV. The result is $Γ_{γγ}(η_c) = 6.9 \pm 1.7 (stat.) \pm 0.8 (sys.) \pm 2.0$(BR) keV. The $Q^2$ dependence of the $η_c$ cross section is studied for $Q^2 < 9$ GeV$^{2}$. It is found to be better described by a Vector Meson Dominance model form factor with a J-pole than with a $ρ$-pole. In addition, a signal of $29 \pm 11$ events is observed at the $χ_c0$ mass. Upper limits for the two-photon widths of the $χ_c0$, $χ_c2$, and $η_c'$ are also given.

Search for Heavy Isosinglet Neutrinos in e$^+$e$^-$ Annihilation at 130$<\sqrt{s}<$189 GeV

A search for heavy neutrinos that are isosinglets under the standard $SU(2)_L$ gauge group is made at center-of-mass energies 130 $< \sqrt{s} <$ 189 GeV with the L3 detector at LEP. Such heavy neutrinos are expected in many extensions of the Standard Model. The search is performed for the first generation heavy singlet neutrino, $\mathrm{N}_e$, through the decay mode $\mathrm{N}_e \to \mathrm{e} + \mathrm{W}$. We set upper limits on the mixing parameter between the heavy and light neutrino for the heavy neutrino mass range from 80 GeV to 185 GeV.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e$^+$e$^-$ interactions at $\root{s}$ = 189 GeV

A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson is carried out on 176.4pb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the L3 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. The data are consistent with the expectations of Standard Model processes and no evidence of a Higgs signal is observed. Combining the results of this search with those at lower center-of-mass energies, a lower limit on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson of 95.3 GeV is set at the 95% confidence level.

Search for Heavy Neutral and Charged Leptons in e$^+$e$^-$ Annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$ = 183 and 189 GeV

A search for unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons as well as for stable charged heavy leptons is performed at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 183 and 189 GeV with the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence for their existence is found. We exclude neutral heavy leptons which couple to the electron, muon or tau family, of the Dirac type for masses below 92.4, 93.3 and 83.3 GeV, and of the Majorana type for masses below 81.8, 84.1 and 73.5 GeV, respectively. We exclude unstable charged heavy leptons for masses below 93.9 GeV for a wide range of the associated neutral heavy lepton mass. If the unstable charged heavy lepton decays to a light neutrino, we exclude masses below 92.4 GeV. The production of stable charged heavy leptons with mass less than 93.5 GeV is also excluded.

Measurement of Inclusive $D^{*\pm}$ Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP

Inclusive production of $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in two-photon collisions was measured by the L3 experiment at LEP. The data were collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 189$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of $176.4 \mathrm{pb^{-1}}$. Differential cross sections of the process $\mathrm{e^+e^- \to D^{*\pm} X}$ are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV $< p_{T}^{\mathrm{D^*}} < 5 $ GeV and $\mathrm{|η^{D^*}|} < 1.4$. The cross section integrated over this phase space domain is measured to be $132 \pm 22(stat.) \pm 26(syst.)$ pb. The differential cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.
