Quantum-limited detection of arrival time and carrier frequency of time-dependent signals

Precise measurements of both the arrival time and carrier frequency of light pulses are essential for time-frequency-encoded quantum technologies. Quantum mechanics, however, imposes fundamental limits on the simultaneous determination of these quantities. In this work, we derive and experimentally verify the quantum uncertainty bounds governing joint time-frequency measurements. We show that when detection is restricted to finite time windows, the problem is naturally described by a quantum rotor, rendering the commonly used Heisenberg uncertainty relation inapplicable. We further propose an optimal detection scheme that saturates these fundamental limits. By sampling the Q-function, we demonstrate the reconstruction of the Wigner function beyond the harmonic oscillator. Using an experimental implementation based on a quantum pulse gate, we confirm that the proposed scheme approaches the ultimate quantum limit for simultaneous time-frequency measurements. These results provide a new framework for joint time-frequency detection with direct implications for precision measurements and quantum information processing.

Multi-copy activation of genuine multipartite entanglement in continuous-variable systems

Multi-copy activation of genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) is a phenomenon whereby multiple copies of biseparable but fully inseparable states can exhibit GME. This was shown to be generically possible in finite dimensions. Here, we extend this analysis to infinite dimensions. We provide examples of GME-activatable non-Gaussian states. For Gaussian states, we apply a necessary biseparability criterion for the covariance matrix and show that it cannot detect GME activation. We further identify fully inseparable Gaussian states that satisfy the criterion but show that multiple and, in some cases, even single copies are GME. Thus, we show that the covariance-matrix biseparability criterion is not sufficient even for Gaussian states.

Unifying uncertainties for rotor-like quantum systems

The quantum rotor represents, after the harmonic oscillator, the next obvious quantum system to study the complementary pair of variables: the angular momentum and the unitary shift operator in angular momentum. Proper quantification of uncertainties and the incompatibility of these two operators are thus essential for applications of rotor-like quantum systems. While angular momentum uncertainty is characterized by variance, several uncertainty measures have been proposed for the shift operator, with dispersion the simplest example. We establish a hierarchy of those measures and corresponding uncertainty relations which are all perfectly or almost perfectly saturated by a tomographically complete set of von Mises states. Building on the interpretation of dispersion as the moment of inertia of the unit ring we then show that the other measures also possess the same mechanical interpretation. This unifying perspective allows us to express all measures as a particular instance of a single generic angular uncertainty measure. The importance of these measures is then highlighted by applying the simplest two of them to derive optimal simultaneous measurements of the angular momentum and the shift operator. Finally, we argue that the model of quantum rotor extends beyond its mechanical meaning with promising applications in the fields of singular optics, super-conductive circuits with a Josephson junction or optimal pulse shaping in the time-frequency domain. Our findings lay the groundwork for quantum-information and metrological applications of the quantum rotor and point to its interdisciplinary nature.

Angle and angular momentum -- new twist for an old pair

Reaching ultimate performance of quantum technologies requires the use of detection at quantum limits and access to all resources of the underlying physical system. We establish a full quantum analogy between the pair of angular momentum and exponential angular variable, and the structure of canonically conjugate position and momentum. This includes the notion of optimal simultaneous measurement of the angular momentum and angular variable, the identification of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-like variables and states, and finally a phase-space representation of quantum states. Our construction is based on close interconnection of the three concepts and may serve as a template for the treatment of other observables. This theory also provides a new testbed for implementation of quantum technologies combining discrete and continuous quantum variables.

Convicting emergent multipartite entanglement with evidence from a partially blind witness

Genuine multipartite entanglement underlies correlation experiments corroborating quantum mechanics and it is an expedient empowering many quantum technologies. One of many counterintuitive facets of genuine multipartite entanglement is its ability to exhibit an emergent character, that is, one can infer its presence in some multipartite states merely from a set of its separable marginals. Here, we show that the effect can be found also in the context of Gaussian states of bosonic systems. Specifically, we construct examples of multimode Gaussian states carrying genuine multipartite entanglement which can be verified solely from separable nearest-neighbour two-mode marginals. The key tool of our construction is a genuine multipartite entanglement witness acting only on some two-mode reductions of the global covariance matrix, which we find by a numerical solution of a semi-definite programme. We also propose an experimental scheme for preparation of the simplest three-mode state, which requires interference of three correlatively displaced squeezed beams on two beam splitters. Besides revealing the concept of emergent genuine multipartite entanglement in the Gaussian scenario and bringing it closer to experimentally testable form, our results pave the way to effective diagnostics methods of global properties of multipartite states without complete tomography.

Gaussian intrinsic entanglement for states with partial minimum uncertainty

We develop a theory of a quantifier of bipartite Gaussian entanglement called Gaussian intrinsic entanglement (GIE) which was proposed recently in [L. Mišta {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 117}, 240505 (2016)]. The GIE provides a compromise between computable and physically meaningful entanglement quantifiers and so far it was calculated for two-mode Gaussian states including all symmetric partial minimum-uncertainty states, weakly mixed asymmetric squeezed thermal states with partial minimum uncertainty, and weakly mixed symmetric squeezed thermal states. We improve the method of derivation of GIE and we show, that all previously derived formulas for GIE of weakly mixed states in fact hold for states with higher mixedness. In addition, we derive analytical formulas for GIE for several new classes of two-mode Gaussian states with partial minimum uncertainty. Finally, it is shown, that like for all previously known states, also for all new states the GIE is equal to Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement of formation. This finding strengthens a conjecture about equivalence of GIE and Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement of formation for all bipartite Gaussian states.

Investigating Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering of continuous variable bipartite states by non-Gaussian pseudospin measurements

EPR steering is an asymmetric form of correlations which is intermediate between quantum entanglement and Bell nonlocality, and can be exploited for quantum communication with one untrusted party. In particular, steering of continuous variable Gaussian states has been extensively studied as a manifestation of the EPR paradox. While most of these studies focused on quadrature measurements for steering detection, two recent works revealed that there exist Gaussian states which are only steerable by non-Gaussian measurements. In this paper we perform a systematic investigation of EPR steering of bipartite Gaussian states by pseudospin measurements, complementing and extending previous findings. We first derive the density matrix elements of two-mode squeezed thermal states in the Fock basis, which may be of independent interest. We then use such a representation to investigate steering of these states as detected by a nonlinear criterion, based on second moments of the pseudospin correlation matrix. This analysis reveals previously unexplored regimes where non-Gaussian measurements are more effective than Gaussian ones to witness steering of Gaussian states in the presence of local noise. We further consider an alternative set of pseudospin observables, whose expectation value can be expressed compactly in terms of Wigner functions for all two-mode Gaussian states. However, according to the adopted criterion, these observables are found to be always less sensitive than Gaussian observables for steering detection. Finally, we investigate continuous variable Werner states, which are non-Gaussian mixtures of Gaussian states, and find that pseudospin measurements are always more effective than Gaussian ones to reveal their steerability. Our results provide useful insights on the role of non-Gaussian measurements in characterizing quantum correlations of Gaussian and non-Gaussian states.

Gaussian intrinsic entanglement

We introduce a cryptographically motivated quantifier of entanglement in bipartite Gaussian systems called Gaussian intrinsic entanglement (GIE). The GIE is defined as the optimized mutual information of a Gaussian distribution of outcomes of measurements on parts of a system, conditioned on the outcomes of a measurement on a purifying subsystem. We show that GIE vanishes only on separable states and exhibits monotonicity under Gaussian local trace-preserving operations and classical communication. In the two-mode case we compute GIE for all pure states as well as for several important classes of symmetric and asymmetric mixed states. Surprisingly, in all of these cases, GIE is equal to Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement. As GIE is operationally associated to the secret-key agreement protocol and can be computed for several important classes of states it offers a compromise between computable and physically meaningful entanglement quantifiers.

Noiseless conditional teleportation of a single photon

We experimentally demonstrate the noiseless teleportation of a single photon by conditioning on quadrature Bell measurement results near the origin in phase space and thereby circumventing the photon loss that otherwise occurs even in optimal gain-tuned continuous-variable quantum teleportation. In general, thanks to this loss suppression, the noiseless conditional teleportation can preserve the negativity of the Wigner function for an arbitrary pure input state and an arbitrary pure entangled resource state. In our experiment, the positive value of the Wigner function at the origin for the unconditional output state, W(0,0) = 0.015 $\pm$ 0.001, becomes clearly negative after conditioning, W(0,0) = $-$0.025 $\pm$ 0.005, illustrating the advantage of noiseless conditional teleportation.

Nonclassical correlations in continuous-variable non-Gaussian Werner states

We study nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement in a family of two-mode non-Gaussian states which represent the continuous-variable counterpart of two-qubit Werner states. We evaluate quantum discord and other quantumness measures obtaining exact analytical results in special instances, and upper and lower bounds in the general case. Non-Gaussian measurements such as photon counting are in general necessary to solve the optimization in the definition of quantum discord, whereas Gaussian measurements are strictly suboptimal for the considered states. The gap between Gaussian and optimal non-Gaussian conditional entropy is found to be proportional to a measure of non-Gaussianity in the regime of low squeezing, for a subclass of continuous-variable Werner states. We further study an example of a non-Gaussian state which is positive under partial transposition, and whose nonclassical correlations stay finite and small even for infinite squeezing. Our results pave the way to a systematic exploration of the interplay between nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity in continuous-variable systems, in order to gain a deeper understanding of -and to draw a bigger advantage from- these two important resources for quantum technology.

Quantum non-demolition measurement saturates fidelity trade-off

A general quantum measurement on an unknown quantum state enables us to estimate what the state originally was. Simultaneously, the measurement has a destructive effect on a measured quantum state which is reflected by the decrease of the output fidelity. We show for any $d$-level system that quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement controlled by a suitably prepared ancilla is a measurement in which the decrease of the output fidelity is minimal. The ratio between the estimation fidelity and the output fidelity can be continuously controlled by the preparation of the ancilla. Different measurement strategies on the ancilla are also discussed. Finally, we propose a feasible scheme of such a measurement for atomic and optical 2-level systems based on basic controlled-NOT gate.

Partial deterministic non-demolition Bell measurement

We propose the scheme implementing partial deterministic non-demolition Bell measurement. When it is used in quantum teleportation the information about an unknown input state is optimally distributed among three outgoing qubits. The optimality means that the output fidelities saturate the asymmetric cloning inequality. The flow of information among the qubits is controlled by the preparation of a pair of ancillary qubits used in the Bell measurement. It is also demonstrated that the measurement is optimal two-qubit operation in the sense of the trade-off between the state disturbance and the information gain.
