Tractability results for the Double-Cut-and-Join circular median problem

The circular median problem in the Double-Cut-and-Join (DCJ) distance asks to find, for three given genomes, a fourth circular genome that minimizes the sum of the mutual distances with the three other ones. This problem has been shown to be NP-complete. We show here that, if the number of vertices of degree 3 in the breakpoint graph of the three input genomes is fixed, then the problem is tractable

Min-max relations for odd cycles in planar graphs

Let m(G) be the maximum number of vertex-disjoint odd cycles of a graph G and t(G) the minimum number of vertices whose removal makes G bipartite. We show that t(G)<=6m(G) if G is planar. This improves the previous bound t(G)<=10m(G) by Fiorini, Hardy, Reed and Vetta [Math. Program. Ser. B 110 (2007), 71-91].

A Tight Bound on the Maximum Interference of Random Sensors in the Highway Model

Consider $n$ sensors whose positions are represented by $n$ uniform, independent and identically distributed random variables assuming values in the open unit interval $(0,1)$. A natural way to guarantee connectivity in the resulting sensor network is to assign to each sensor as its range, the maximum of the two possible distances to its two neighbors. The interference at a given sensor is defined as the number of sensors that have this sensor within their range. In this paper we prove that the expected maximum interference of the sensors is $Θ(\sqrt{\ln n})$.

Coloring plane graphs with independent crossings

We show that every plane graph with maximum face size four whose all faces of size four are vertex-disjoint is cyclically 5-colorable. This answers a question of Albertson whether graphs drawn in the plane with all crossings independent are 5-colorable.

Cyclic colorings of plane graphs with independent faces

Let G be a plane graph with maximum face size D. If all faces of G with size four or more are vertex disjoint, then G has a cyclic coloring with D+1 colors, i.e., a coloring such that all vertices incident with the same face receive distinct colors.
