Expedited Multi-Target Search with Guaranteed Performance via Multi-fidelity Gaussian Processes

We consider a scenario in which an autonomous vehicle equipped with a downward facing camera operates in a 3D environment and is tasked with searching for an unknown number of stationary targets on the 2D floor of the environment. The key challenge is to minimize the search time while ensuring a high detection accuracy. We model the sensing field using a multi-fidelity Gaussian process that systematically describes the sensing information available at different altitudes from the floor. Based on the sensing model, we design a novel algorithm called Expedited Multi-Target Search (EMTS) that (i) addresses the coverage-accuracy trade-off: sampling at locations farther from the floor provides wider field of view but less accurate measurements, (ii) computes an occupancy map of the floor within a prescribed accuracy and quickly eliminates unoccupied regions from the search space, and (iii) travels efficiently to collect the required samples for target detection. We rigorously analyze the algorithm and establish formal guarantees on the target detection accuracy and the expected detection time. We illustrate the algorithm using a simulated multi-target search scenario.

Effects of resonant magnetic perturbation on locked mode of neo-classical tearing modes

Effects of externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) on the locked mode of neo-classical tearing mode (NTM) are numerically investigated by means of a set of reduced magnetohydrodynamic equations. It is found that for a small bootstrap current fraction, three regimes, namely slight suppression regime, small locked island (SLI) regime and big locked island (BLI) regime, are discovered with the increase of RMP strength. For a much higher bootstrap current fraction, however, a new oscillation regime appears instead of the SLI regime, although the other regimes still remain. The physical process in each regime is analyzed in detail based on the phase difference between NTM and RMP. Moreover, the critical values of RMP in both SLI and BLI regimes are obtained, and their dependence on key plasma parameters is discussed as well.

On Distributed Multi-player Multiarmed Bandit Problems in Abruptly Changing Environment

We study the multi-player stochastic multiarmed bandit (MAB) problem in an abruptly changing environment. We consider a collision model in which a player receives reward at an arm if it is the only player to select the arm. We design two novel algorithms, namely, Round-Robin Sliding-Window Upper Confidence Bound\# (RR-SW-UCB\#), and the Sliding-Window Distributed Learning with Prioritization (SW-DLP). We rigorously analyze these algorithms and show that the expected cumulative group regret for these algorithms is upper bounded by sublinear functions of time, i.e., the time average of the regret asymptotically converges to zero. We complement our analytic results with numerical illustrations.

On Abruptly-Changing and Slowly-Varying Multiarmed Bandit Problems

We study the non-stationary stochastic multiarmed bandit (MAB) problem and propose two generic algorithms, namely, the limited memory deterministic sequencing of exploration and exploitation (LM-DSEE) and the Sliding-Window Upper Confidence Bound# (SW-UCB#). We rigorously analyze these algorithms in abruptly-changing and slowly-varying environments and characterize their performance. We show that the expected cumulative regret for these algorithms under either of the environments is upper bounded by sublinear functions of time, i.e., the time average of the regret asymptotically converges to zero. We complement our analytic results with numerical illustrations.

House Price Prediction Using LSTM

In this paper, we use the house price data ranging from January 2004 to October 2016 to predict the average house price of November and December in 2016 for each district in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. We apply Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model to generate the baseline while LSTM networks to build prediction model. These algorithms are compared in terms of Mean Squared Error. The result shows that the LSTM model has excellent properties with respect to predict time series. Also, stateful LSTM networks and stack LSTM networks are employed to further study the improvement of accuracy of the house prediction model.

Design of Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes over GF(q) for Windowed Decoding

In this paper we consider the generalization of binary spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes to finite fields GF$(q)$, $q\geq 2$, and develop design rules for $q$-ary SC-LDPC code ensembles based on their iterative belief propagation (BP) decoding thresholds, with particular emphasis on low-latency windowed decoding (WD). We consider transmission over both the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel (BIAWGNC) and present results for a variety of $(J,K)$-regular SC-LDPC code ensembles constructed over GF$(q)$ using protographs. Thresholds are calculated using protograph versions of $q$-ary density evolution (for the BEC) and $q$-ary extrinsic information transfer analysis (for the BIAWGNC). We show that WD of $q$-ary SC-LDPC codes provides significant threshold gains compared to corresponding (uncoupled) $q$-ary LDPC block code (LDPC-BC) ensembles when the window size $W$ is large enough and that these gains increase as the finite field size $q=2^m$ increases. Moreover, we demonstrate that the new design rules provide WD thresholds that are close to capacity, even when both $m$ and $W$ are relatively small (thereby reducing decoding complexity and latency). The analysis further shows that, compared to standard flooding-schedule decoding, WD of $q$-ary SC-LDPC code ensembles results in significant reductions in both decoding complexity and decoding latency, and that these reductions increase as $m$ increases. For applications with a near-threshold performance requirement and a constraint on decoding latency, we show that using $q$-ary SC-LDPC code ensembles, with moderate $q>2$, instead of their binary counterparts results in reduced decoding complexity.

Performance Comparison of LDPC Block and Spatially Coupled Codes over GF(q)

In this paper, we compare the finite-length performance of protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes and LDPC block codes (LDPC-BCs) over GF(q). In order to reduce computational complexity and latency, a sliding window decoder with a stopping rule based on a soft bit-error-rate (BER) estimate is used for the q-ary SC-LDPC codes. Two regimes are considered: one when the constraint length of q-ary SC-LDPC codes is equal to the block length of q-ary LDPC-BCs and the other when the two decoding latencies are equal. Simulation results confirm that, in both regimes, (3,6)-, (3,9)-, and (3,12)-regular non-binary SC-LDPC codes can significantly outperform both binary and non-binary LDPC-BCs and binary SC-LDPC codes. Finally, we present a computational complexity comparison of q-ary SC-LDPC codes and q-ary LDPC-BCs under equal decoding latency and equal decoding performance assumptions.

Threshold Analysis of Non-Binary Spatially-Coupled LDPC Codes with Windowed Decoding

In this paper we study the iterative decoding threshold performance of non-binary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (NB-SC-LDPC) code ensembles for both the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel (BIAWGNC), with particular emphasis on windowed decoding (WD). We consider both (2,4)-regular and (3,6)-regular NB-SC-LDPC code ensembles constructed using protographs and compute their thresholds using protograph versions of NB density evolution and NB extrinsic information transfer analysis. For these code ensembles, we show that WD of NB-SC-LDPC codes, which provides a significant decrease in latency and complexity compared to decoding across the entire parity-check matrix, results in a negligible decrease in the near-capacity performance for a sufficiently large window size W on both the BEC and the BIAWGNC. Also, we show that NB-SC-LDPC code ensembles exhibit gains in the WD threshold compared to the corresponding block code ensembles decoded across the entire parity-check matrix, and that the gains increase as the finite field size q increases. Moreover, from the viewpoint of decoding complexity, we see that (3,6)-regular NB-SC-LDPC codes are particularly attractive due to the fact that they achieve near-capacity thresholds even for small q and W.

An Improved Algorithm for Fixed-Hub Single Allocation Problem

This paper discusses the fixed-hub single allocation problem (FHSAP). In this problem, a network consists of hub nodes and terminal nodes. Hubs are fixed and fully connected; each terminal node is connected to a single hub which routes all its traffic. The goal is to minimize the cost of routing the traffic in the network. In this paper, we propose a linear programming (LP)-based rounding algorithm. The algorithm is based on two ideas. First, we modify the LP relaxation formulation introduced in Ernst and Krishnamoorthy (1996, 1999) by incorporating a set of validity constraints. Then, after obtaining a fractional solution to the LP relaxation, we make use of a geometric rounding algorithm to obtain an integral solution. We show that by incorporating the validity constraints, the strengthened LP often provides much tighter upper bounds than the previous methods with a little more computational effort, and the solution obtained often has a much smaller gap with the optimal solution. We also formulate a robust version of the FHSAP and show that it can guard against data uncertainty with little cost.

From Cellular Characteristics to Disease Diagnosis: Uncovering Phenotypes with Supercells

Cell heterogeneity and the inherent complexity due to the interplay of multiple molecular processes within the cell pose difficult challenges for current single-cell biology. We introduce an approach that identifies a disease phenotype from multiparameter single-cell measurements, which is based on the concept of "supercell statistics", a single-cell-based averaging procedure followed by a machine learning classification scheme. We are able to assess the optimal tradeoff between the number of single cells averaged and the number of measurements needed to capture phenotypic differences between healthy and diseased patients, as well as between different diseases that are difficult to diagnose otherwise. We apply our approach to two kinds of single-cell datasets, addressing the diagnosis of a premature aging disorder using images of cell nuclei, as well as the phenotypes of two non-infectious uveitides (the ocular manifestations of Behçet's disease and sarcoidosis) based on multicolor flow cytometry. In the former case, one nuclear shape measurement taken over a group of 30 cells is sufficient to classify samples as healthy or diseased, in agreement with usual laboratory practice. In the latter, our method is able to identify a minimal set of 5 markers that accurately predict Behçet's disease and sarcoidosis. This is the first time that a quantitative phenotypic distinction between these two diseases has been achieved. To obtain this clear phenotypic signature, about one hundred CD8+ T cells need to be measured. Beyond these specific cases, the approach proposed here is applicable to datasets generated by other kinds of state-of-the-art and forthcoming single-cell technologies, such as multidimensional mass cytometry, single-cell gene expression, and single-cell full genome sequencing techniques.
