Lectures on Generalized Symmetries

These are a set of lecture notes on generalized global symmetries in quantum field theory. The focus is on invertible symmetries with a few comments regarding non-invertible symmetries. The main topics covered are the basics of higher-form symmetries and their properties including 't Hooft anomalies, gauging and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We also introduce the useful notion of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs). Furthermore, an introduction to higher-group symmetries describing mixings of higher-form symmetries is provided. Some advanced topics covered include the encoding of higher-form symmetries in holography and geometric engineering constructions in string theory. Throughout the text, all concepts are consistently illustrated using gauge theories as examples.

Unifying Constructions of Non-Invertible Symmetries

In the past year several constructions of non-invertible symmetries in Quantum Field Theory in $d\geq 3$ have appeared. In this paper we provide a unified perspective on these constructions. Central to this framework are so-called theta defects, which generalize the notion of theta-angles, and allow the construction of universal and non-universal topological symmetry defects. We complement this physical analysis by proposing a mathematical framework (based on higher-fusion categories) that converts the physical construction of non-invertible symmetries into a concrete computational scheme.

Non-Invertible Symmetry Webs

Non-invertible symmetries have by now seen numerous constructions in higher dimensional Quantum Field Theories (QFT). In this paper we provide an in depth study of gauging 0-form symmetries in the presence of non-invertible symmetries. The starting point of our analysis is a theory with $G$ 0-form symmetry, and we propose a description of sequential partial gaugings of sub-symmetries. The gauging implements the theta-symmetry defects of the companion paper [1]. The resulting network of symmetry structures related by this gauging will be called a non-invertible symmetry web. Our formulation makes direct contact with fusion 2-categories, and we uncover numerous interesting structures such as symmetry fractionalization in this categorical setting. The complete symmetry web is derived for several groups $G$, and we propose extensions to higher dimensions. The highlight of this analysis is the complete categorical symmetry web, including non-invertible symmetries, for 3d pure gauge theories with orthogonal gauge groups and its extension to arbitrary dimensions.

Universal Non-Invertible Symmetries

It is well-known that gauging a finite 0-form symmetry in a quantum field theory leads to a dual symmetry generated by topological Wilson line defects. These are described by the representations of the 0-form symmetry group which form a 1-category. We argue that for a d-dimensional quantum field theory the full set of dual symmetries one obtains is in fact much larger and is described by a (d-1)-category, which is formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with the same 0-form symmetry. We study in detail a 2-categorical piece of this (d-1)-category described by 2d topological quantum field theories with 0-form symmetry. We further show that the objects of this 2-category are the recently discussed 2d condensation defects constructed from higher-gauging of Wilson lines. Similarly, dual symmetries obtained by gauging any higher-form or higher-group symmetry also form a (d-1)-category formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with that higher-form or higher-group symmetry. A particularly interesting case is that of the 2-category of dual symmetries associated to gauging of finite 2-group symmetries, as it describes non-invertible symmetries arising from gauging 0-form symmetries that act on (d-3)-form symmetries. Such non-invertible symmetries were studied recently in the literature via other methods, and our results not only agree with previous results, but our approach also provides a much simpler way of computing various properties of these non-invertible symmetries. We describe how our results can be applied to compute non-invertible symmetries of various classes of gauge theories with continuous disconnected gauge groups in various spacetime dimensions. We also discuss the 2-category formed by 2d condensation defects in any arbitrary quantum field theory.

Non-Invertible Higher-Categorical Symmetries

We sketch a procedure to capture general non-invertible symmetries of a d-dimensional quantum field theory in the data of a higher-category, which captures the local properties of topological defects associated to the symmetries. We also discuss fusions of topological defects, which involve condensations/gaugings of higher-categorical symmetries localized on the worldvolumes of topological defects. Recently some fusions of topological defects were discussed in the literature where the dimension of topological defects seems to jump under fusion. This is not possible in the standard description of higher-categories. We explain that the dimension-changing fusions are understood as higher-morphisms of the higher-category describing the symmetry. We also discuss how a 0-form sub-symmetry of a higher-categorical symmetry can be gauged and describe the higher-categorical symmetry of the theory obtained after gauging. This provides a procedure for constructing non-invertible higher-categorical symmetries starting from invertible higher-form or higher-group symmetries and gauging a 0-form symmetry. We illustrate this procedure by constructing non-invertible 2-categorical symmetries in 4d gauge theories and non-invertible 3-categorical symmetries in 5d and 6d theories. We check some of the results obtained using our approach against the results obtained using a recently proposed approach based on 't Hooft anomalies.

Disconnected 0-Form and 2-Group Symmetries

Quantum field theories can have both continuous and finite 0-form symmetries. We study global symmetry structures that arise when both kinds of 0-form symmetries are present. The global structure associated to continuous 0-form symmetries is described by a connected Lie group, which captures the possible backgrounds of the continuous 0-form symmetries the theory can be coupled to. Finite 0-form symmetries can act as outer-automorphisms of this connected Lie group. Consequently, possible background couplings to both continuous and finite 0-form symmetries are described by a disconnected Lie group, and we call the resulting symmetry structure a disconnected 0-form symmetry. Additionally, finite 0-form symmetries may act on the 1-form symmetry group. The 1-form symmetries and continuous 0-form symmetries may combine to form a 2-group, which when combined with finite 0-form symmetries leads to another type of 2-group, that we call a disconnected 2-group and the resulting symmetry structure a disconnected 2-group symmetry. Examples of arbitrarily complex disconnected 0-form and 2-group symmetries in any spacetime dimension are furnished by gauge theories: with 1-form symmetries arising from the center of the gauge group, continuous 0-form symmetries arising as flavor symmetries acting on matter content, and finite 0-form symmetries arising from outer-automorphisms of gauge and flavor Lie algebras.

Global Form of Flavor Symmetry Groups in 4d N=2 Theories of Class S

We provide a systematic method to deduce the global form of flavor symmetry groups in 4d N=2 theories obtained by compactifying 6d N=(2,0) superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on a Riemann surface carrying regular punctures and possibly outer-automorphism twist lines. Apriori, this method only determines the group associated to the manifest part of the flavor symmetry algebra, but often this information is enough to determine the group associated to the full enhanced flavor symmetry algebra. Such cases include some interesting and well-studied 4d N=2 SCFTs like the Minahan-Nemeschansky theories. The symmetry groups obtained via this method match with the symmetry groups obtained using a Lagrangian description if such a description arises in some duality frame. Moreover, we check that the proposed symmetry groups are consistent with the superconformal indices available in the literature. As another application, our method finds distinct global forms of flavor symmetry group for pairs of interacting 4d N=2 SCFTs (recently pointed out in the literature) whose Coulomb branch dimensions, flavor algebras and levels coincide (along with other invariants), but nonetheless are distinct SCFTs.

The Global Form of Flavor Symmetries and 2-Group Symmetries in 5d SCFTs

2-group symmetries arise when 1-form symmetries and 0-form symmetries of a theory mix with each other under group multiplication. We discover the existence of 2-group symmetries in 5d N=1 abelian gauge theories arising on the (non-extended) Coulomb branch of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), leading us to argue that the UV 5d SCFT itself admits a 2-group symmetry. Furthermore, our analysis determines the global forms of the 0-form flavor symmetry groups of 5d SCFTs, irrespective of whether or not the 5d SCFT admits a 1-form symmetry. As a concrete application of our method, we analyze 2-group symmetries of all 5d SCFTs, which reduce in the IR, after performing mass deformations, to 5d N=1 non-abelian gauge theories with simple, simply connected gauge groups. For rank-1 Seiberg theories, we check that our predictions for the flavor symmetry groups match with the superconformal and ray indices available in the literature. We also comment on the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 1-form and 0-form symmetries arising in 5d N=1 non-abelian gauge theories and its relation to the 2-groups.

Relative Defects in Relative Theories: Trapped Higher-Form Symmetries and Irregular Punctures in Class S

A relative theory is a boundary condition of a higher-dimensional topological quantum field theory (TQFT), and carries a non-trivial defect group formed by mutually non-local defects living in the relative theory. Prime examples are 6d N=(2,0) theories that are boundary conditions of 7d TQFTs, with the defect group arising from surface defects. In this paper, we study codimension-two defects in 6d N=(2,0) theories, and find that the line defects living inside these codimension-two defects are mutually non-local and hence also form a defect group. Thus, codimension-two defects in a 6d N=(2,0) theory are relative defects living inside a relative theory. These relative defects provide boundary conditions for topological defects of the 7d bulk TQFT. A codimension-two defect carrying a non-trivial defect group acts as an irregular puncture when used in the construction of 4d N=2 Class S theories. The defect group associated to such an irregular puncture provides extra "trapped" contributions to the 1-form symmetries of the resulting Class S theories. We determine the defect groups associated to large classes of both conformal and non-conformal irregular punctures. Along the way, we discover many new classes of irregular punctures. A key role in the analysis of defect groups is played by two different geometric descriptions of the punctures in Type IIB string theory: one provided by isolated hypersurface singularities in Calabi-Yau threefolds, and the other provided by ALE fibrations with monodromies.

2-Group Symmetries and their Classification in 6d

We uncover 2-group symmetries in 6d superconformal field theories. These symmetries arise when the discrete 1-form symmetry and continuous flavor symmetry group of a theory mix with each other. We classify all 6d superconformal field theories with such 2-group symmetries. The approach taken in 6d is applicable more generally, with minor modifications to include dimension specific operators (such as instantons in 5d and monopoles in 3d), and we provide a discussion of the dimension-independent aspects of the analysis. We include an ancillary mathematica code for computing 2-group symmetries, once the dimension specific input is provided. We also discuss a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between discrete 0-form and 1-form symmetries in 6d.

2-Group Symmetries in Class S

2-group symmetries are generalized symmetries that arise when 1-form and 0-form symmetries mix with each other. We uncover the existence of a class of 2-group symmetries in general 4d N=2 theories of Class S that can be constructed by compactifying 6d N=(2,0) SCFTs on Riemann surfaces carrying arbitrary regular punctures and outer-automorphism twist lines. The 2-group structure can be captured in terms of equivalence classes of line defects plus flavor Wilson lines, which can be thought of as accounting for screening of line defects while keeping track of flavor charges. We describe a method for computing these equivalence classes for a general Class S theory using the data on the Riemman surface used for compactifying its parent 6d N=(2,0) theory.

Liberating Confinement from Lagrangians: 1-form Symmetries and Lines in 4d N=1 from 6d N=(2,0)

We study confinement in 4d N=1 theories obtained by deforming 4d N=2 theories of Class S. We argue that confinement in a vacuum of the N=1 theory is encoded in the 1-cycles of the associated N=1 curve. This curve is the spectral cover associated to a generalized Hitchin system describing the profiles of two Higgs fields over the Riemann surface upon which the 6d (2,0) theory is compactified. Using our method, we reproduce the expected properties of confinement in various classic examples, such as 4d N=1 pure Super-Yang-Mills theory and the Cachazo-Seiberg-Witten setup. More generally, this work can be viewed as providing tools for probing confinement in non-Lagrangian N=1 theories, which we illustrate by constructing an infinite class of non-Lagrangian N=1 theories that contain confining vacua. The simplest model in this class is an N=1 deformation of the N=2 theory obtained by gauging $SU(3)^3$ flavor symmetry of the $E_6$ Minahan-Nemeschansky theory.

Do all 5d SCFTs descend from 6d SCFTs?

We present examples of 5d SCFTs that serve as counter-examples to a recently actively studied conjecture according to which it should be possible to obtain all 5d SCFTs by integrating out BPS particles from 6d SCFTs compactified on a circle. We further observe that it is possible to obtain these 5d SCFTs from 6d SCFTs if one allows integrating out BPS strings as well. Based on this observation, we propose a revised version of the conjecture according to which it should be possible to obtain all 5d SCFTs by integrating out both BPS particles and BPS strings from 6d SCFTs compactified on a circle. We describe a general procedure to integrate out BPS strings from a 5d theory once a geometric description of the 5d theory is given. We also discuss the consequences of the revised conjecture for the classification program of 5d SCFTs.

Flavor Symmetry of 5d SCFTs, Part 2: Applications

In Part 1 of this series of papers, we described a general method for determining the flavor symmetry of any 5d SCFT which can be constructed by integrating out BPS particles from some 6d SCFT compactified on a circle. In this part, we apply the method to explicitly determine the flavor symmetry of those 5d SCFTs which reduce, upon a mass deformation, to some 5d N=1 gauge theory carrying a simple gauge algebra. In these cases, the flavor symmetry of the 5d gauge theory is often enhanced at the conformal point. We use our method to determine this enhancement.

Flavor Symmetry of 5d SCFTs, Part 1: General Setup

A large class of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) can be constructed by integrating out BPS particles from 6d SCFTs compactified on a circle. We describe a general method for extracting the flavor symmetry of any 5d SCFT lying in this class. For this purpose, we utilize the geometric engineering of 5d N=1 theories in M-theory, where the flavor symmetry is encoded in a collection of non-compact surfaces.

1-form Symmetries of 4d N=2 Class S Theories

We determine the 1-form symmetry group for any 4d N = 2 class S theory constructed by compactifying a 6d N=(2,0) SCFT on a Riemann surface with arbitrary regular untwisted and twisted punctures. The 6d theory has a group of mutually non-local dimension-2 surface operators, modulo screening. Compactifying these surface operators leads to a group of mutually non-local line operators in 4d, modulo screening and flavor charges. Complete specification of a 4d theory arising from such a compactification requires a choice of a maximal subgroup of mutually local line operators, and the 1-form symmetry group of the chosen 4d theory is identified as the Pontryagin dual of this maximal subgroup. We also comment on how to generalize our results to compactifications involving irregular punctures. Finally, to complement the analysis from 6d, we derive the 1-form symmetry from a Type IIB realization of class S theories.

Higher-form symmetries of 6d and 5d theories

We describe general methods for determining higher-form symmetry groups of known 5d and 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), and 6d little string theories (LSTs). The 6d theories can be described as supersymmetric gauge theories in 6d which include both ordinary non-abelian 1-form gauge fields and also abelian 2-form gauge fields. Similarly, the 5d theories can also be often described as supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theories in 5d. Naively, the 1-form symmetry of these 6d and 5d theories is captured by those elements of the center of ordinary gauge group which leave the matter content of the gauge theory invariant. However, an interesting subtlety is presented by the fact that some massive BPS excitations, which includes the BPS instantons, are charged under the center of the gauge group, thus resulting in a further reduction of the 1-form symmetry. We use the geometric construction of these theories in M/F-theory to determine the charges of these BPS excitations under the center. We also provide an independent algorithm for the determination of 1-form symmetry for 5d theories that admit a generalized toric construction. The 2-form symmetry group of 6d theories, on the other hand, is captured by those elements of the center of the abelian 2-form gauge group that leave all the massive BPS string excitations invariant, which is much more straightforward to compute as it is encoded in the Green-Schwarz coupling associated to the 6d theory.

$SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on QFTs with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and the Brown-Kervaire invariants

We consider an analogue of Witten's $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on three-dimensional QFTs with $U(1)$ symmetry for $2k$-dimensional QFTs with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ $(k-1)$-form symmetry. We show that the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action only closes up to a multiplication by an invertible topological phase whose partition function is the Brown-Kervaire invariant of the spacetime manifold. We interpret it as part of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ anomaly of the bulk $(2k+1)$-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory.
