Correlation energy of a homogeneous dipolar Fermi gas

We study the normal state of a 3-$d$ homogeneous dipolar Fermi gas beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The correlation energy is found of the same order as the Fock energy, unusually strong for a Fermi-liquid system. As a result, the critical density of mechanical collapse is smaller than that estimated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. With the correlation energy included, a new energy functional is proposed for the trapped system, and its property is explored.

Antiferromagnetism and superfluidity of a dipolar Fermi gas in a 2D optical lattice

In a dipolar Fermi gas, the dipole-dipole interaction between fermions can be turned into a dipolar Ising interaction between pseduospins in the presence of an AC electric field. When trapped in a 2D optical lattice, such a dipolar Fermi gas has a very rich phase diagram at zero temperature, due to the competition between antiferromagnetism and superfluidity. At half filling, the antiferromagnetic state is the favored ground state. The superfluid state appears as the ground state at a smaller filling factor. In between there is a phase-separated region. The order parameter of the superfluid state can display different symmetries depending on the filling factor and interaction strength, including d-wave ($d$), extend s-wave ($xs$), or their linear combination ($xs+i\times d$). The implication for the current experiment is discussed.

Induced interaction in a spin-polarized Fermi gas

We study the effect of the induced interaction on the superfluidtransition temperature of a spin-polarized Fermi gas. In the BCS limit, the polarization is very small in the superfluid state, and the effect of the induced interaction is almost the same as in the spin-balanced case. The temperature Tt and the polarization Pt of the tricritical point are both reduced from mean-field results by a factor about 2.22. This reduction is also significant beyond the BCS limit. In the unitary limit, we find (Pt,Tt/TF)=(0.42,0.16), in comparison with mean-field and experimental results.

Collinear antiferromagnetic state in a two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling

In a half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice, the next-nearest-neighbor hopping causes spin frustration, and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) state appears as the ground state with suitable parameters. We find that there is a metal-insulator transition in the CAF state at a critical on-site repulsion. When the repulsion is small, the CAF state is metallic, and a van Hove singularity can be close to the Fermi surface, resulting in either a kink or a discontinuity in the magnetic moment. When the on-site repulsion is large, the CAF state is a Mott insulator. A first-order transition from the CAF phase to the antiferromagnetic phase and a second-order phase transition from the CAF phase to the paramagnetic phase are obtained in the phase diagram at zero temperature.

Molecular Bose-Einstein condensation in a Bose gas with a wide Feshbach resonance at finite temperatures

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of Feshbach molecules in a homogeneous Bose gas is studied at finite temperatures in a single-channel mean-field approach where the Hartree-Fock energy and pairing gap are determined self-consistently. In the molecular-BEC state, the atomic excitation is gapped and the molecular excitation is gapless. The binding energy of Feshbach molecules is shifted from the vacuum value due to many-body effect. When the scattering length $a_s$ of atoms is negative, the system is subject to mechanical collapse due to negative compressibility. The system is stable in most regions with positive scattering lengths. However at low temperatures near the resonance, the molecular-BEC state vanishes, and the coherent mixture of atomic and molecular BEC is subject to mechanical collapse.

The induced interaction in a Fermi gas with a BEC-BCS crossover

We study the effect of the induced interaction on the superfluid transition temperature of a Fermi gas with a BEC-BCS crossover. The Gorkov-Melik-Barkhudarov theory about the induced interaction is extended from the BCS side to the entire crossover, and the pairing fluctuation is treated in the approach by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink. At unitarity, the induced interaction reduces the transition temperature by about twenty percent. In the BCS limit, the transition temperature is reduced by a factor about 2.22, as found by Gorkov and Melik-Barkhudarov. Our result shows that the effect of the induced interaction is important both on the BCS side and in the unitary region.

Ginzburg-Landau theory of a trapped Fermi gas with a BEC-BCS crossover

The Ginzburg-Landau theory of a trapped Fermi gas with a BEC-BCS crossover is derived by the path-integral method. In addition to the standard Ginzburg-Landau equation, a second equation describing the total atom density is obtained. These two coupled equations are necessary to describe both homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. The Ginzburg-Landau theory is valid near the transition temperature $T_c$ on both sides of the crossover. In the weakly-interacting BEC region, it is also accurate at zero temperature where the Ginzburg-Landau equation can be mapped onto the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. The applicability of GP equation at finite temperature is discussed. On the BEC side, the fluctuation of the order parameter is studied and the renormalization to the molecule coupling constant is obtained.

Phase diagram of a Bose gas near a wide Feshbach resonance

In this paper, we study the phase diagram of a homogeneous Bose gas with a repulsive interaction near a wide Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. The Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) state of atoms is a metastable state. When the scattering length $a$ exceeds a critical value depending on the atom density $n$, $na^3>0.035$, the molecular excitation energy is imaginary and the atomic BEC state is dynamically unstable against molecule formation. The BEC state of diatomic molecules has lower energy, where the atomic excitation is gapped and the molecular excitation is gapless. However when the scattering length is above another critical value, $na^3>0.0164$, the molecular BEC state becomes a unstable coherent mixture of atoms and molecules. In both BEC states, the binding energy of diatomic molecules is reduced due to the many-body effect.

Vortex Properties of a Resonant Superfluid

The properties of a vortex in a rotating superfluid Fermi gas are studied in the unitary limit. A phenomenological approach based on Ginzburg-Landau theory is developed for this purpose. The density profiles, including those of the normal fluid and superfluid, are obtained at various temperatures and rotation frequencies. The superfluid and normal fluid densities can be identified from the angular momentum density. The total free energy and angular momentum of the vortex are also obtained.

The three-body recombination of a condensed Bose gas near a Feshbach resonance

In this paper, we study the three-body recombination rate of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. The ground state and excitations of this system are obtained. The three-body recombination in the ground state is due to the break-up of an atom pair in the quantum depletion and the formation of a molecule by an atom from the broken pair and an atom from the condensate. The rate of this process is in good agreement with the experiment on $^{23}$Na in a wide range of magnetic fields.

Phase slip in a superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

In this paper, we study the properties of a phase slip in a superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance. The phase slip can be generated by the phase imprinting method. Below the superfluid transition temperature, it appears as a dip in the density profile, and becomes more pronounced when the temperature is lowered. Therefore the phase slip can provide a direct evidence of the superfluid state. The condensation energy of the superfluid state can be extracted from the density profile of the phase slip, due to the unitary properties of the Fermi gas near the resonance. The width of the phase slip is proportional to the square root of the difference between the transition temperature and the temperature. The signature of the phase slip in the density profile becomes more robust across the BCS-BEC crossover.

Collective excitations in a fermion-fermion mixture with different Fermi surfaces

In this paper, collective excitations in a homogeneous fermion-fermion mixture with different Fermi surfaces are studied. In the Fermi liquid phase, the zero-sound velocity is found to be larger than the largest Fermi velocity. With attractive interactions, the superfluid phase appears below a critical temperature, and the phase mode is the low-energy collective excitation. The velocity of the phase mode is proportional to the geometric mean of the two Fermi velocities. The difference between the two velocities may serve as a tool to detect the superfluid phase.

Spiral phase and phase separation of the double exchange model in the large-S limit

The phase diagram of the double exchange model is studied in the large-S limit at zero temperature in two and three dimensions. We find that the spiral state has lower energy than the canted antiferromagnetic state in the region between the antiferromagnetic phase and the ferromagnetic phase. At small doping, the spiral phase is unstable against phase separation due to its negative compressibility. When the Hund coupling is small, the system separates into spiral regions and antiferromagnetic regions. When the Hund coupling is large, the spiral phase disappears completely and the system separates into ferromagnetic regions and antiferromagnetic regions.

Properties of a Dilute Bose Gas near a Feshbach Resonance

In this paper, properties of a homogeneous Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance are studied in the dilute region at zero temperature. The stationary state contains condensations of atoms and molecules. The ratio of the molecule density to the atom density is $πna^3$. There are two types of excitations, molecular excitations and atomic excitations. Atomic excitations are gapless, consistent with the traditional theory of a dilute Bose gas. The molecular excitation energy is finite in the long wavelength limit as observed in recent experiments on $^{85}$Rb. In addition, the decay process of the condensate is studied. The coefficient of the three-body recombination rate is about 140 times larger than that of a Bose gas without a Feshbach resonance, in reasonably good agreement with the experiment on $^{23}$Na.

Pairing Instability and Mechanical Collapse of a Bose Gas with an Attractive Interaction

We study the pairing instability and mechanical collapse of a dilute homogeneous bose gas with an attractive interaction. The pairing phase is found to be a saddle point, unstable against pairing fluctuations. This pairing saddle point exists above a critical temperature. Below this critical temperature, the system is totally unstable in the pairing channel. Thus the system could collapse in the pairing channel in addition to mechanical collapse. The critical temperatures of pairing instability and mechanical collapse are higher than the BEC temperature of an ideal bose gas with the same density. When fluctuations are taken into account, we find that the critical temperature of mechanical collapse is even higher. The difference between the collapse temperature and the BEC temperature is proportional to $(n|a_s|^3)^{2/9}$, where $n$ is the density and $a_s$ is the scattering length.

The General Structure of Bose Gases with Arbitrary Spin

Motivated by the recent discoveries of spin-1 and spin-1/2 Bose gas, we have studied the general structure of the Bose gases with arbitrary spin. A general method is developed to uncover the elementary building blocks of the angular momentum eigenstates, as well as the relations (or interactions) between them. Applications of this method to Bose gases with integer spins (f=1,2,3) and half integer spins (f=1/2,3/2) reveal many surprising structures.

Spin-spin Correlation lengths of Bilayer Antiferromagnets

The spin-spin correlation length and the static structure factor for bilayer antiferromagnets, such as YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6}$, are calculated using field theoretical and numerical methods. It is shown that these quantities can be directly measured in neutron scattering experiments using energy integrated two-axis scan despite the strong intensity modulation perpendicular to the layers. Our calculations show that the correlation length of the bilayer antiferromagnet diverges considerably more rapidly, as the temperature tends to zero, than the correlation length of the corresponding single layer antiferromagnet typified by La$_2$CuO$_4$. This rapid divergence may have important consequences with respect to magnetic fluctuations of the doped superconductors.

Interactions and Scaling in a Disordered Two-Dimensional Metal

We show that a non-Fermi liquid state of interacting electrons in two dimensions is stable in the presence of disorder and is a perfect conductor, provided the interactions are sufficiently strong. Otherwise, the disorder leads to localization as in the case of non-interacting electrons. This conclusion is established by examining the replica field theory in the weak disorder limit, but in the presence of arbitrary electron-electron interaction. Thus, a disordered two-dimensional metal is a perfect metal, but not a Fermi liquid.
