Generalized entanglement distillation

We present a way for the entanglement distillation of genuine mixed state. Different from the conventional mixed state in entanglement purification protocol, each components of the mixed state in our protocol is a less-entangled state, while it is always a maximally entangled state. With the help of the weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, this entanglement distillation protocol does not require the sophisticated single-photon detectors. Moreover, the distilled high quality entangled state can be retained to perform the further distillation. These properties make it more convenient in practical applications.

Controllable single-photon frequency converter via a one-dimensional waveguide

We propose a single-photon frequency converter via a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a $V$-type atom. The on-demand classical field allows the atom to absorb a photon with a given frequency, then emit a photon with a carried frequency different from the absorbed one. The absorption and re-emission process is formulated as a two-channel scattering process. We study the single-photon frequency conversion mechanism in two kinds of realistic physical system: coupled resonator waveguide with cosine dispersion relation and an optical waveguide with linear dispersion relation respectively. We find that the driving field prefers weak in coupled resonator waveguide but arbitrarily strong in optical waveguide to achieve an optical transfer efficiency.

Protecting sing-photon multi-mode W state from photon loss

Single-photon entanglement is of major importance in current quantum communications. However, it is sensitive to photon loss. In this paper, we discuss the protection of single-photon multi-mode W state with noiseless linear amplification. It is shown that the amplification factor is only decided with the transmission coefficient of the variable fiber beam splitters, and it does not change with the number of the spatial mode. This protocol may be useful in current quantum information processing.

Measurement of arbitrary two-photon entanglement state with the photonic Faraday rotation

We propose an efficient protocol for measuring the concurrence of arbitrary two-photon pure entangled state with the help of the photonic Faraday rotation. In the protocol, the concurrence of the photonic entangled state can be conversed into the total success probability for picking up the odd-parity photonic state. For completing the measurement task, we require some auxiliary three-level atoms, which are trapped in the low-quality cavities. Our protocol can be well realized under current experimental conditions. Moreover, under practical imperfect atom state detection and photonic Faraday rotation conditions, our protocol can also work well. Based on these features, our protocol may be useful in current quantum information processing.

Efficient semiparametric estimation in generalized partially linear additive models for longitudinal/clustered data

We consider efficient estimation of the Euclidean parameters in a generalized partially linear additive models for longitudinal/clustered data when multiple covariates need to be modeled nonparametrically, and propose an estimation procedure based on a spline approximation of the nonparametric part of the model and the generalized estimating equations (GEE). Although the model in consideration is natural and useful in many practical applications, the literature on this model is very limited because of challenges in dealing with dependent data for nonparametric additive models. We show that the proposed estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal even if the covariance structure is misspecified. An explicit consistent estimate of the asymptotic variance is also provided. Moreover, we derive the semiparametric efficiency score and information bound under general moment conditions. By showing that our estimators achieve the semiparametric information bound, we effectively establish their efficiency in a stronger sense than what is typically considered for GEE. The derivation of our asymptotic results relies heavily on the empirical processes tools that we develop for the longitudinal/clustered data. Numerical results are used to illustrate the finite sample performance of the proposed estimators.

Distillation of genuine mixed state for quantum communications

We present a practical entanglement distillation protocol (EDP) with linear optics for a genuine mixed state. Each components of the genuine mixed state is a pure less-entangled state. After successfully performing this EDP, we can obtain a high quality entangled mixed state. Our EDP can work for both ideal entanglement sources and current available spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) sources, which makes it feasible in current experimental technology. Moreover, by using the SPDC source, we can obtain a higher fidelity. This protocol can also be used to distill the multi-partite entangled systems. All the features make it practical and useful in current quantum communications.

Detection of the nonlocal atomic entanglement assisted with single photons

We present an efficient way for measuring the entanglement of the atoms. Through the auxiliary single photons input-output process in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the concurrence of the atomic entanglement can be obtained according to the success probability of picking up the singlet states of the atoms. This protocol has three advantages: First, we do not require the sophisticated controlled-not (CNOT) gates. Second, the distributed atoms are not required to intact with each other. Third, the atomic entanglement can be distributed nonlocally, which provides its important applications in distributed quantum computation.

Single-photon router: Coherent Control of multi-channel scattering for single-photons with quantum interferences

We propose a single-photon router using a single atom with an inversion center coupled to quantum multichannels made of coupled-resonator waveguides. We show that the spontaneous emission of the atom can direct single photons from one quantum channel into another. The on-demand classical field perfectly switches-off the single-photon routing due to the quantum interference in the atomic amplitudes of optical transitions. Total reflections in the incident channel are due to the photonic bound state in the continuum. Two virtual channels, named as scatter-free and controllable channels, are found, which are coherent superpositions of quantum channels. Any incident photon in the scatter-free channel is totally transmitted. The propagating states of the controllable channel are orthogonal to those of the scatter-free channel. Single photons in the controllable channel can be perfectly reflected or transmitted by the atom.

Two-step measurement of the concurrence for hyperentangled state

We describe an efficient way for measuring the concurrence of the hyperentanglement. In this protocol, the hyperentangled state is encoded in both polarization and momentum degrees of freedom. We show that the concurrences of both polarization and momentum entanglement can be conversed into the total success probability of picking up the odd-parity state and can be measured directly. This protocol requires the weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity to construct the quantum nondemolition measurement and does not resort to the sophisticated controlled-not gate operation. It is feasible in current experimental technology.

Deterministic polarization entanglement purification using time-bin entanglement

We present a deterministic entanglement purification protocol (EPP) working for currently available experiment technique. In this protocol, we resort to the robust time-bin entanglement to purify the polarization entanglement determinately, which is quite different from the previous EPPs. After purification, one can obtain a completely pure maximally entangled pair with the success probability of 100%, in principle. As the maximal polarization entanglement is of vice importance in long-distance quantum communication, this protocol may have a wide application.

Deterministic entanglement distillation for secure double-server blind quantum computation

Blind quantum computation (BQC) provides an efficient method for the client who does not have enough sophisticated technology and knowledge to perform universal quantum computation. The single-server BQC protocol requires the client to have some minimum quantum ability, while the double-server BQC protocol makes the client's device completely classical, resorting to the pure and clean Bell-state shared by two servers. In this paper, we provide a deterministic entanglement distillation protocol in a practical noisy environment for the double-server BQC protocol. This protocol can obtain the pure maximally entangled Bell state with the success probability of 100% in principle. The distilled maximally entangled states can be remaind to perform the BQC protocol subsequently. The parties who perform the distillation protocol do not need to exchange the classical information and they learn nothing from the client. It makes this protocol unconditionally secure and suitable for current BQC protocol.

Optimal concentrating arbitrary partially entangled W states with linear optics

We propose two optimal entanglement concentration protocols (ECPs) for arbitrary single-photon multi-mode W state and multi-photon polarization W state, respectively. In both ECPs, we only require one pair of partially entangled W state, and do not consume any auxiliary photon. Both ECPs are based on the linear optics which can be easily realized. On the other hand, the concentrated maximally entangled states can be remained, which are quite different from the previous ECPs. Moreover, for the concentration of the arbitrary single-photon N-mode W state or N-mode polarization W state, the total success probability is equal to Nth the modulus square of the Schmidt coefficient of the smallest magnitude. It makes both ECPs optimal than all the previous ECPs. Our ECPs may be useful in current quantum communication fields.

Waveguide QED: controllable channel from quantum interference

We study a waveguide QED system with a rectangular waveguide and a two-level system (TLS) inside, where the transverse modes TMmn define the quantum channels of guided photons. It is discovered that the loss of photons in the TM11 channel into the others can be overcome by replacing it with a certain coherent superposition of TMmn channels, which is named as the controllable channel (CC) as the photons in CC can be perfectly reflected or transmitted by the TLS, and never lost into the other channels. The dark state emerges when the photon is incident from one of the scattering-free channels (SFCs) orthogonal to CC. The underlying physics mechanism is the multi-channel interference associated with Fano resonance.

Quantum Routing of Single Photons with Cyclic Three-Level System

We propose an experimentally accessible single-photon routing scheme using a $\bigtriangleup$-type three-level atom embedded in quantum multi-channels composed of coupled-resonator waveguides. Via the on-demand classical field applied to the atom, the router can extract a single photon from the incident channel, and then redirect it into another. The efficient functions of perfect reflection of single photon signal in the incident channel is rooted in the coherent resonance and the existence of photonic bound states.

Efficient hybrid entanglement concentration for quantum communications

We present two groups of practical entanglement concentration protocols (ECPs) for optical hybrid entangled state (HES). In the first group, it contains two ECPs and both ECPs do not need to know the initial coefficients of the less-entangled state. The second group contains three ECPs and they need to know the initial coefficients. It is shown that the yield of the entanglement concentration in the second group is greater than the first group. Moreover, some protocols are based on the linear optics and can be easily realized under current experiment condition. These protocols may be useful in current hybrid quantum communication.

Distilling single-photon entanglement from photon loss and decoherence

Single-photon entanglement may be the simplest type of entanglement but it is of vice importance in quantum communication. Here we present a practical protocol for distilling the single-photon entanglement from both photon loss and decoherence. With the help of some local single photons, the probability of single photon loss can be decreased and the less-entangled state can also be recovered to maximally entangled state simultaneously. It only requires some linear optical elements which makes it feasible in current experiment condition. This protocol might find applications in current quantum communications based on the quantum repeaters.

Weak-Value Amplification of light deflection by a dark atomic ensemble

We study the coherent propagation of light whose dynamics is governed by the effective Schrödinger equation derived in a magneto-optically-manipulated atomic ensemble with a four-level tripod configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The small transverse deflection of an optical beam, which is ultra-sensitive to the EIT effect, could be drastically amplified via a weak measurement with an appropriate preselection and postselection of the polarization state. The physical mechanism is explained as the effect of wavepacket reshaping, which results in an enlarged group velocity in the transverse direction.

Optimal multi-photon entanglement concentration with the photonic Faraday rotation

A recent paper (Phys. Rev. A \textbf{86}, 034305 (2012)) proposed an entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for distilling one pair of maximally entangled multi-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state from two pairs of less-entangled multi-photon states with the photonic Faraday rotation. In this paper, we put forward an improved ECP for arbitrary less-entangled multi-photon GHZ state. In the ECP, we only require one pair of less-entangled multi-photon state and one auxiliary photon, and the whole concentration process only requires local operations. Moreover, our ECP can be used repeatedly to further concentrate the less-entangled multi-photon state and obtain a higher success probability. If consider the practical operation and imperfect detection, our protocol is more efficient. This ECP may be useful in current quantum information processing.
