Estimating weak Markov-switching AR(1) models

In this paper, we present the asymptotic properties of the moment estimator for autoregressive (AR for short) models subject to Markovian changes in regime under the assumption that the errors are uncorrelated but not necessarily independent. We relax the standard independence assumption on the innovation process to extend considerably the range of application of the Markov-switching AR models. We provide necessary conditions to prove the consistency and asymptotic normality of the moment estimator in a specific case. Particular attention is paid to the estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix. Finally, some simulation studies and an application to the hourly meteorological data are presented to corroborate theoretical work.

Estimation of subcritical Galton Watson processes with correlated immigration

We consider an observed subcritical Galton Watson process $\{Y_n,\ n\in \mathbb{Z} \}$ with correlated stationary immigration process $\{\epsilon_n,\ n\in \mathbb{Z} \}$. Two situations are presented. The first one is when $\mbox{Cov}(\epsilon_0,\epsilon_k)=0$ for $k$ larger than some $k_0$: a consistent estimator for the reproduction and mean immigration rates is given, and a central limit theorem is proved. The second one is when $\{\epsilon_n,\ n\in \mathbb{Z} \}$ has general correlation structure: under mixing assumptions, we exhibit an estimator for the the logarithm of the reproduction rate and we prove that it converges in quadratic mean with explicit speed. In addition, when the mixing coefficients decrease fast enough, we provide and prove a two terms expansion for the estimator. Numerical illustrations are provided.

An SDP dual relaxation for the Robust Shortest Path Problem with ellipsoidal uncertainty: Pierra's decomposition method and a new primal Frank-Wolfe-type heuristics for duality gap evaluation

This work addresses the Robust counterpart of the Shortest Path Problem (RSPP) with a correlated uncertainty set. Since this problem is hard, a heuristic approach, based on Frank-Wolfe's algorithm named Discrete Frank-Wolf (DFW), has recently been proposed. The aim of this paper is to propose a semi-definite programming relaxation for the RSPP that provides a lower bound to validate approaches such as DFW Algorithm. The relaxed problem results from a bidualization that is done {through} a reformulation of the RSPP into a quadratic problem. Then the relaxed problem is solved using a sparse version of Pierra's decomposition in a product space method. This validation method is suitable for large size problems. The numerical experiments show that the gap between the solutions obtained with the relaxed and the heuristic approaches is relatively small.

Asymptotics for infinite server queues with fast/slow Markov switching and fat tailed service times

We study a general $k$ dimensional infinite server queues process with Markov switching, Poisson arrivals and where the service times are fat tailed with index $α\in (0,1)$. When the arrival rate is sped up by a factor $n^γ$, the transition probabilities of the underlying Markov chain are divided by $n^γ$ and the service times are divided by $n$, we identify two regimes (''fast arrivals'', when $γ>α$, and ''equilibrium'', when $γ=α$) in which we prove that a properly rescaled process converges pointwise in distribution to some limiting process. In a third ''slow arrivals'' regime, $γ<α$, we show the convergence of the two first joint moments of the rescaled process.

Multitype branching process with nonhomogeneous Poisson and generalized Polya immigration

In a multitype branching process, it is assumed that immigrants arrive according to a nonhomogeneous Poisson or a generalized Polya process (both processes are formulated as a nonhomogeneous birth process with an appropriate choice of transition intensities). We show that the renormalized numbers of objects of the various types alive at time $t$ for supercritical, critical, and subcritical cases jointly converge in distribution under those two different arrival processes. Furthermore, some transient moment analysis when there are only two types of particles is provided. AMS 2000 subject classifications: Primary 60J80, 60J85; secondary 60K10, 60K25, 90B15.

Analysis of the infinite server queues with semi-Markovian multivariate discounted inputs

We consider a general $k$ dimensional discounted infinite server queues process (alternatively, an Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) claim process) where the multivariate inputs (claims) are given by a $k$ dimensional finite state Markov Chain and the arrivals follow a renewal process. After deriving a multidimensional integral equation for the moment generating function jointly to the state of the input at time $t$ given the initial state of the input at time 0, asymptotic results for the first and second (matrix) moments of the process are provided. In particular, when the interarrival or service times are exponentially distributed, transient expressions for the first two moments are obtained. Also, the moment generating function for the process with deterministic interarrival times is considered to provide more explicit expressions. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of the present model by showing how it allows us to study a semi-Markov modulated infinite server queues where the customers (claims) arrival and service (reporting delay) times depend on the state of the process immediately before and on the switching times. Estimation of weak ARMA models with regime changes

In this paper we derive the asymptotic properties of the least squares estimator (LSE) of autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) models with regime changes under the assumption that the errors are uncorrelated but not necessarily independent. Relaxing the independence assumption considerably extends the range of application of the class of ARMA models with regime changes. Conditions are given for the consistency and asymptotic normality of the LSE. A particular attention is given to the estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix, which may be very different from that obtained in the standard framework. The theoretical results are illustrated by means of Monte Carlo experiments.

Asymptotic Correlation Structure of Discounted Incurred But Not Reported Claims under Fractional Poisson Arrival Process

This paper studies the joint moments of a compound discounted renewal process observed at different times with each arrival removed from the system after a random delay. This process can be used to describe the aggregate (discounted) Incurred But Not Reported claims in insurance and also the total number of customers in an infinite server queue. It is shown that the joint moments can be obtained recursively in terms of the renewal density, from which the covariance and correlation structures are derived. In particular, the fractional Poisson process defined via the renewal approach is also considered. Furthermore, the asymptotic behaviour of covariance and correlation coefficient of the aforementioned quantities is analyzed as the time horizon goes to infinity. Special attention is paid to the cases of exponential and Pareto delays.

On a multivariate renewal-reward process involving time delays and discounting: Applications to IBNR process and infinite server queues

This paper considers a particular renewal-reward process with multivariate discounted rewards (inputs) where the arrival epochs are adjusted by adding some random delays. Then this accumulated reward can be regarded as multivariate discounted Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) claims in actuarial science and some important quantities studied in queueing theory such as the number of customers in G/G/infinity queues with correlated batch arrivals. We study the long term behavior of this process as well as its moments. Asymptotic expressions and bounds for the quantities of our interest, and also convergence result for the distribution of this process after renormalization, are studied, when interarrival times and time delays are light tailed. Next, assuming exponentially distributed delays, we derive some explicit and numerically feasible expressions for the limiting joint moments. In such case, for an innite server queues with renewal arrival process, we obtain limiting results on the expectation of the workload, and the covariance of queue size and workload. Finally, some queueing theoretic applications are providedMSC classification: 60G50, 60K30, 62P05, 60K25

High order expansions for renewal functions and applications to ruin theory

A high order expansion of the renewal function is provided under the assumption that the inter-renewal time distribution is light tailed with finite moment generating function g on a neighborhood of 0. This expansion relies on complex analysis and is expressed in terms of the residues of the function 1/(1 -- g). Under the assumption that g can be extended into a meromorphic function on the complex plane and some technical conditions, we obtain even an exact expansion of the renewal function. An application to risk theory is given where we consider high order expansion of the ruin probability for the standard compound Poisson risk model. This precises the well known Crámer-Lundberg approximation of the ruin probability when the initial reserve is large.

Passage times of perturbed subordinators with application to reliability

We consider a wide class of increasing Lévy processes perturbed by an independent Brownian motion as a degradation model. Such family contains almost all classical degradation models considered in the literature. Classically failure time associated to such model is defined as the hitting time or the first-passage time of a fixed level. Since sample paths are not in general increasing, we consider also the last-passage time as the failure time following a recent work by Barker and Newby. We address here the problem of determining the distribution of the first-passage time and of the last-passage time. In the last section we consider a maintenance policy for such models.
