Cascade of Spin Liquids in a Bilayer Triangular-lattice Antiferromagnet Rb_2Co_2(SeO_3)_3

In frustrated Ising magnets, classical spin liquids (CSLs) with macroscopic ground-state degeneracy can survive against conventional magnetic order, as exemplified by systems on triangular, kagome and pyrochlore lattices at zero field. Here we report the discovery of a high-field route toward spin liquids in a bilayer triangular lattice antiferromagnet, Rb$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$. We demonstrate that a cascade of CSLs -- characterized by doubly degenerate one-up-one-down local spin configurations and a residual entropy of 1/2(1-M/M_s)Rln2 per mole -- emerges through field-controlled dilution of Ising dimers. Owing to the interplay of intra- and inter-layer interactions, these CSLs are further stabilized by lattice symmetry breaking at fractional magnetization plateaus. Such field-induced spin liquids can be understood as a consequence of generalized ice rules, analogous to those governing in pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In particular, the 5/6-plateau state is a candidate quantum spin liquid. Our results thereby establish a new pathway for exploring diverse spin liquid states across both classical and quantum regimes.

Robust Flat Magnetoresistivity in D0$_3$-Fe$_3$Ga Driven by Chiral Anomaly

Topologically non-trivial nodes emerging from flat-band crossings not only enhance unconventional topological responses but also play a fundamental role in exploring correlation-driven topological physics. Here, we report the exceptionally robust chiral-anomaly-dominated transport in D0_3-Fe_3Ga. First, we observe a combination of positive and negative magnetoresistance, ideal planar longitudinal magnetoresistance (PLMR), and the planar Hall effect (PHE). Second, ultra-low-temperature resistivity exhibits pronounced non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior, accompanied by the emergence of giant intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC), in excellent agreement with our DFT calculations, which confirm the existence of tilted Weyl points arising from crossings of nearly three-dimensional (3D) flat bands. Most remarkably, we detect an exceptionally robust flat magnetoresistance (flat-MR) that persists without decay up to 33 T. This set of phenomena provides strong evidence that the Fermi level intersects the flattened Weyl crossings, offering confirmation of a topological flat-band semimetal. D0_3-Fe_3Ga presents a promising magnetic platform for quantum device innovations.

Realization of large magnetocaloric effect in the Kagome antiferromagnet Gd3BWO9 for Sub-Kelvin cryogenic refrigeration

Rare-earth (RE) based frustrated magnets have attracted great attention as excellent candidates for magnetic refrigeration at sub-Kelvin temperatures, while the experimental identification on systems exhibiting both large volumetric cooling capacity and reduced working temperatures far below 1 K remain to be a challenge. Here, through the ultra-low temperature magnetism and thermodynamic characterizations, we unveil the large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) realized at sub-Kelvin temperatures in the frustrated Kagome antiferromagnet Gd3BWO9 with TN~1.0 K. The isothermal magnetization curves indicate the existence of field (B) induced anisotropic magnetic phase diagrams, where four distinct magnetic phases for B // c-axis and five magnetic phases for B // ab-plane are identified at T< TN. The analysis of magnetic entropy S(B, T) data and direct adiabatic demagnetization tests reveal a remarkable cooling performance at sub-Kelvin temperatures featured by a large volumetric entropy density 502.2 mJ/K/cm3 and a low attainable minimal temperature Tmin~168 mK from the initial cooling condition of 2 K and 6 T, surpassing most of Gd-based refrigerants previously documented in temperature ranges of 0.25-4 K. The realized Tmin~168 mK far below TN ~ 1.0 K in Gd3BWO9 is related to the combined effects of magnetic frustration and criticality-enhanced MCE, which together leave a substantial magnetic entropy at reduced temperatures by enhancing spin fluctuations.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless region and magnetization plateaus in easy-axis triangular weak-dimer antiferromagnet K$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$

We investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the bilayer triangular antiferromagnet K$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$, revealing a rich interplay among geometric frustration, bilayer coupling, and symmetry-driven phenomena. High-field magnetization measurements show fractional magnetization plateaus at 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 5/6 of the saturation magnetization. To elucidate the experimental magnetic phase diagram at low fields, we propose that K$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$ can be described as an easy-axis triangular weak-dimer antiferromagnet. We emphasize the critical role of the emergent $U(1) \otimes S_3$ symmetry, where $S_3 = \mathbb{Z}_3 \otimes \mathbb{Z}_2^d$, in determining the magnetic phases at low fields. The remarkable agreement between the experimental and theoretical phase diagrams suggests that the phase transitions are governed by this symmetry. Notably, our combined experimental and theoretical results identify a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase region at finite fields. These findings provide new insights into the phase structure of frustrated magnets and establish K$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$ as a compelling platform for exploring unconventional quantum phenomena in $U(1) \otimes S_3$ systems.

Structure and magnetic properties of a family of two-leg spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, and Gd-Ho) with strong rung interaction

Compared to the intensive investigation on the 3d transition-metal (TM)-based spin ladder compounds, less attention has been paid to the ones constructed by the rare-earth (RE) ions. Herein, we report a family of RE-based spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) crystallized into the monoclinic structure with the space group C2/c. The RE ions are arranged on a two-leg spin ladder motif along the b-axis, where the rung and leg exchange interactions are bridged via the RE-O-RE pathways and RE-O-Ge-O-RE routes, respectively. Moreover, the much shorter rung distance in the RE2O12 dimer units than the leg distance suggests Ba2RE2Ge4O13 to be a strong-rung spin ladder system. All the synthesized Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) compounds exhibit the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and absence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K. Among the family members, Ba2Dy2Ge4O13 can be described by Jeff = 1/2 Kramers doublet states, the low temperature specific heat indicates the coexistence of spin dimerized state with broad maximum at ~ 2.4 K and long-range AFM order with TN = 0.81 K. This family of Ba2RE2Ge4O13 compounds thereby provides a rare platform to investigate the novel spin ladder physics constructed by 4f electrons.

A family of rare-earth Quasi-One-Dimensional spin-chain compounds K2RENb5O15 (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm,Gd-Ho) with large interchain distance

One-dimensional spin chain systems have received special attention to discover the novel magnetic ground states and emergent phenomena, while the magnetic studies on rare-earth (RE)-based 1D spin chain materials are still rare. Here, we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic behaviors on a family of tetragonal tungsten-bronze structure K2RENb5O15 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd-Ho) compounds, which consist of 1D linear spin-chain structure built by RE3+ ions along the c-axis and well spatially separated by the nonmagnetic K/Nb-O polyhedrons with large interchain distances of ~ 8.80-8.88 Å in the ab-plane. The low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 1.8 K for all serial K2RENb5O15 compounds and the dominant ferromagnetic interactions for RE=Ce,Dy and antiferromagnetic interactions for other members. Among them, K2GdNb5O15 with spin only magnetic moment S=7/2, exhibits a long-range magnetic order with TN~0.31 K and strong spin fluctuations at low temperatures due to its low-dimension characteristics. Moreover, a large magnetocaloric effect under low field change of 0-2 T is realized at temperatures below 1 K for K2GdNb5O15, letting it as an ideal candidate for adiabatic magnetic refrigeration applications at sub-kelvin temperatures. The K2RENb5O15 become a rare family of insulting RE-based magnets to explore the novel 1D spin chain physics beyond the 3d TM-based counterparts, in terms of its combination of low dimension, strong spin-orbital coupling and the rich diversity of RE ions.

Magnetic-field tuned anisotropic quantum phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Nd3BWO9

Rare-earth (RE) kagome-lattice magnets offer an excellent platform to discover the novel magnetic phase as well as quantum phase transition tuned by non-thermal control parameters, while the experimental realizations remain largely unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of magnetic-field (B)-induced anisotropic quantum phase transition in a distorted kagome antiferromagnet Nd3BWO9 with TN~0.32 K. The isothermal magnetizations at 0.05 K exhibit the spin-flop like metamagnetic crossover behaviors with different fractional magnetization anomalies for B perpendicular (B // c-axis) and parallel (B // a*-axis) to the kagome plane, respectively. In combination with the thermodynamic measurements, the field-temperature (B-T) phase diagrams for both field directions are constructed and that reveal the existence of several field-induced magnetic states. Along the c-axis, a proximate quantum bicritical point is observed near the metamagnetic crossover, which separates the low-field antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and the intermediate AFM phase. While, for B // a*, another intermediate magnetic phase (IAFM2) appears between the low-field AFM phase and intermediate AFM (IAFM1) phase, giving rise to a tetracritical point. These results support the anisotropic field-induced metamagnetic quantum criticalities in Nd3BWO9, making it as a rare kagome antiferromagnet to investigate the quantum multi-criticality driven by spin frustration.

Huge magnetostriction in superconducting single-crystalline BaFe$_{1.908}$Ni$_{0.092}$As$_{2}$

The performance of iron-based superconductors in high magnetic fields plays an important role for their practical application. In this work, we measured the magnetostriction and magnetization of BaFe$_{1.908}$Ni$_{0.092}$As$_{2}$ single crystals using pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T and static magnetic fields up to 33 T, respectively. A huge longitudinal magnetostriction (of the order of 10$ ^{-4} $) was observed in the direction of the twin boundaries. The magnetization measurements evidence a high critical-current density due to strong bulk pinning. By using magnetization data with an exponential flux-pinning model, we can reproduce the magnetostriction curves qualitatively. This result shows that the magnetostriction of BaFe$_{1.908}$Ni$_{0.092}$As$_{2}$ can be well explained by a flux-pinning-induced mechanism.

Field-induced quantum spin disordered state in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (vertical to b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets.

Field evolution of the spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$

We report magnetization, heat capacity, thermal expansion, and magnetostriction measurements down to millikelvin temperatures on the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$. Our data exclude the formation of the distinct $\frac13$ plateau phase observed in other triangular antiferromagnets, but reveal plateaulike features in second derivatives of the free energy, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, at $μ_0H$ = 1.0 - 2.5 T for $H\parallel{}c$ and 2 - 5 T for $H\perp{}c$. Using Monte-Carlo simulations of a realistic spin Hamiltonian, we ascribe these features to nonmonotonic changes in the magnetization and the $\frac12$ plateau that is smeared out by the random distribution of exchange couplings in YbMgGaO$_4$.

Magnetoelectric effect arising from a field-induced pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion in a rare earth magnet

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO4)2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and electric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO4)2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er3+ moments below TN = 0.87 K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase (P ~ 0.5 nC/cm2) emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. We argue that the magnetoelectric coupling in this system arises from a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the magnetic field.

On the anisotropies of magnetization and electronic transport of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

Co3Sn2S2, a quasi-two-dimensional system with kagome lattice, has been found as a magnetic Weyl semimetal recently. In this work, the anisotropies of magnetization and transport properties of Co3Sn2S2 were investigated. The high field measurements reveal a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy with an out-of-plane saturation field of 0.9 kOe and an in-plane saturation field of 230 kOe at 2 K, showing a magnetocrystalline anisotropy coefficient Ku up to 8.3 * 10^5 J m-3, which indicates that it is extremely difficult to align the small moment of 0.29 μB/Co on the kagome lattice from c axis to ab plane. The out-of-plane angular dependences of Hall conductivity further reveal strong anisotropies in Berry curvature and ferromagnetism, and the vector directions of both are always parallel with each other. For in-plane situation, the longitudinal and transverse measurements for both I parallel a and I perpendicular a cases show that the transport on the kagome lattice is isotropic. These results provide essential understanding on the magnetization and transport behaviors for the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2.

Tricritical point and phase diagram based on critical scaling in monoaxial chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2

In this work, the magnetism of the single crystal Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which exhibits chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) state, is investigated. The magnetization displays strong magnetic anisotropy when the field is applied perpendicularly and parallel to the $c$-axis in low field region ($H<H_{S}$, $H_{S}$ is the saturation field). The critical exponents of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$ are obtained as $β=$ 0.370(4), $γ=$ 1.380(2), and $δ=$ 4.853(6), which are close to the theoretical prediction of three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Based on the scaling equation and the critical exponents, the $H-T$ phase diagram in the vicinity of the phase transition is constructed, where two critical points are determined. One is a tricritical point which locates at the intersection between the CSL, forced ferromagnetic (FFM), and paramagnetic (PM) states. The other one is a critical point situated at the boundaries between CSL, helimagnetic (HM), and PM states.

Manipulating Multiple Order Parameters via Oxygen Vacancies: The case of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ

Controlling functionalities, such as magnetism or ferroelectricity, by means of oxygen vacancies (VO) is a key issue for the future development of transition metal oxides. Progress in this field is currently addressed through VO variations and their impact on mainly one order parameter. Here we reveal a new mechanism for tuning both magnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously by using VO. Combined experimental and density-functional theory studies of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies create Ti3+ 3d1 defect states, mediating the ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Eu 4f7 spins, and increase an off-center displacement of Ti ions, enhancing the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The dual function of Ti sites also promises a magnetoelectric coupling in the Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ.

Superconductivity in topologically nontrivial material Au2Pb

The search for nontrivial superconductivity in novel quantum materials is currently a most attractive topic in condensed matter physics and material science. The experimental studies have progressed quickly over the past couple of years. In this article, we report systematic studies of superconductivity in Au2Pb single crystals. The bulk superconductivity (onset transition temperature, Tconset= 1.3 K) of Au2Pb is characterized by both transport and diamagnetic measurements, where the upper critical field Hc2 shows unusual quasi-linear temperature dependence. The superconducting gap is revealed by point contact measurement with gold tip. However, when using tungsten (W) tip, which is much harder, the superconducting gap probed is largely enhanced as demonstrated by the increases of both Tconset and upper critical field (Hc2). This can be interpreted as a result of increase in density of states under external anisotropic stress imposed by the tip, as revealed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, novel phase winding of the pseudospin texture along k-space loops around the Fermi energy is uncovered from the calculations, indicating that the observed superconductivity in Au2Pb may have nontrivial topology.

Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_{x}$

Charge density wave (CDW), the periodic modulation of the electronic charge density, will open a gap on the Fermi surface that commonly leads to decreased or vanishing conductivity. On the other hand superconductivity, a commonly believed competing order, features a Fermi surface gap that results in infinite conductivity. Here we report that superconductivity emerges upon Se doping in CDW conductor ZrTe$_{3}$ when the long range CDW order is gradually suppressed. Superconducting critical temperature $T_c(x)$ in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ (${0\leq}x\leq0.1$) increases up to 4 K plateau for $0.04$$\leq$$x$$\leq$$0.07$. Further increase in Se content results in diminishing $T_{c}$ and filametary superconductivity. The CDW modes from Raman spectra are observed in $x$ = 0.04 and 0.1 crystals, where signature of ZrTe$_{3}$ CDW order in resistivity vanishes. The electronic-scattering for high $T_{c}$ crystals is dominated by local CDW fluctuations at high temperures, the resistivity is linear up to highest measured $T=300K$ and contributes to substantial in-plane anisotropy.

Single Crystal Growth of the New Pressure-induced-superconductor CrAs via Chemical Vapor Transport

Mono-arsenide CrAs, endures a helical anti-ferromagnetic order transition at~ 265 K under ambient pressure. Recently, pressure-induced-superconductivity was discovered vicinity to the helical anti-ferromagnetic order in CrAs[Wei Wu et al., Nature Communications 5, 5508 (2014).]. However, the size of crystal grown via tin flux method is as small as 1 mm in longest dimension. In this work, we report the single crystal growth of CrAs with size of 1 * 5 * 1 mm3 via chemical vapor transport method and its physical properties.

Gapless quantum spin liquid ground state in the two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Θ$$_w$ $\sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($\leq$ $|$$Θ$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 \%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.
