Instruction-based Image Editing: A Survey on Data, Models, Evaluation, and Applications

Instruction-based Image Editing (IIE) aims to transform a given image into a new one based on textual instructions. Advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have accelerated progress toward practical ``one-sentence image editing" systems. This survey presents a systematic taxonomy and comprehensive review of IIE research, structured around five core dimensions: (1) task definition and hierarchical categorization of editing operations, (2) methodologies for training data construction, (3) architectural evolution from GAN-based to diffusion and autoregressive paradigms, (4) standardized evaluation metrics and benchmark development, and (5) introduction of commercial solutions. Our analysis shows critical technological milestones across model generations. We further propose a Comprehensive, in-Depth, and Diagnostic benchmark for IIE task (CDD-IIE Bench), which can rigorously assess the multiple aspects of model performance. Through empirical comparisons of open-source solutions, we highlight their respective capabilities and limitations. Finally, we discuss future research directions to advance the field.

OmniEraser: Remove Objects and Their Effects in Images with Paired Video-Frame Data

Inpainting algorithms have achieved remarkable progress in removing objects from images, yet still face two challenges: 1) struggle to handle the object's visual effects such as shadow and reflection; 2) easily generate shape-like artifacts and unintended content. In this paper, we propose Video4Removal, a large-scale dataset comprising over 100,000 high-quality samples with realistic object shadows and reflections. By constructing object-background pairs from video frames with off-the-shelf vision models, the labor costs of data acquisition can be significantly reduced. To avoid generating shape-like artifacts and unintended content, we propose Object-Background Guidance, an elaborated paradigm that takes both the foreground object and background images. It can guide the diffusion process to harness richer contextual information. Based on the above two designs, we present OmniEraser, a novel method that seamlessly removes objects and their visual effects using only object masks as input. Extensive experiments show that OmniEraser significantly outperforms previous methods, particularly in complex in-the-wild scenes. And it also exhibits a strong generalization ability in anime-style images. Datasets, models, and codes will be published.

Disentangle and denoise: Tackling context misalignment for video moment retrieval

Video Moment Retrieval, which aims to locate in-context video moments according to a natural language query, is an essential task for cross-modal grounding. Existing methods focus on enhancing the cross-modal interactions between all moments and the textual description for video understanding. However, constantly interacting with all locations is unreasonable because of uneven semantic distribution across the timeline and noisy visual backgrounds. This paper proposes a cross-modal Context Denoising Network (CDNet) for accurate moment retrieval by disentangling complex correlations and denoising irrelevant dynamics.Specifically, we propose a query-guided semantic disentanglement (QSD) to decouple video moments by estimating alignment levels according to the global and fine-grained correlation. A Context-aware Dynamic Denoisement (CDD) is proposed to enhance understanding of aligned spatial-temporal details by learning a group of query-relevant offsets. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed CDNet achieves state-of-the-art performances.

ProTA: Probabilistic Token Aggregation for Text-Video Retrieval

Text-video retrieval aims to find the most relevant cross-modal samples for a given query. Recent methods focus on modeling the whole spatial-temporal relations. However, since video clips contain more diverse content than captions, the model aligning these asymmetric video-text pairs has a high risk of retrieving many false positive results. In this paper, we propose Probabilistic Token Aggregation (ProTA) to handle cross-modal interaction with content asymmetry. Specifically, we propose dual partial-related aggregation to disentangle and re-aggregate token representations in both low-dimension and high-dimension spaces. We propose token-based probabilistic alignment to generate token-level probabilistic representation and maintain the feature representation diversity. In addition, an adaptive contrastive loss is proposed to learn compact cross-modal distribution space. Based on extensive experiments, ProTA achieves significant improvements on MSR-VTT (50.9%), LSMDC (25.8%), and DiDeMo (47.2%).
