Reconstruction of Ancient Egyptian Sundials

The article presents the results of a study of the design features of vertical and L-shaped ancient Egyptian sundials, developed their models, on the basis of which the reconstruction of the sundial was carried out. An original scheme of a simple method for a fairly accurate time measurement with their help is also proposed. The model proposed by us, which describes a vertical sundial, is a vertical sundial with an inclined gnomon that takes into account the latitude of the area. The model proposed by us is characterized by marking the hour lines from 6 to 12 o'clock every hour. From 12:00 a shift is made in the marking of the hour lines for half an hour, and then the marking is repeated every hour. As a consequence of the reconstruction of the vertical sundial, we have developed and proposed a model that describes the design features and operation of two types of L-shaped sundial. They had to work in conjunction with an inclined gnomon, like a vertical sundial, or directly with a vertical sundial. In this case, the L-shaped sundial could complement the vertical sundial by providing the ability to read hour markers and interpret the readings of the vertical sundial, as there were no inscriptions on the vertical sundial. The article also provides a decoding of the inscription from the tomb of Seti I, which has long intrigued researchers. It is proved that the inscription contains the lengths of the intervals between adjacent marks of the L-shaped sundial of the second type, where the first interval corresponds not to one hour, but to half an hour.

Bronze Age sundial from Prokletije (Montenegro)

The article presents the results of a study of signs on a Bronze Age slab "Sun stone" discovered at the foot of Maja e Can in Volusnica massif (Prokletije National Park, Montenegro). Studies have shown that the slab is an analemmatic sundial. The "Sun Stone" is more similar in marking to the slabs of the Srubnaya culture: all the cup marks are small and located along the ellipse line. Ellipses of bowl-shaped signs of analemmatic sundials from the Northern Black Sea region are similar in size to the reconstructed ellipse of the "Sun Stone". In addition, on one sundial from the Northern Black Sea region, the groove marks the distance that the gnomon must travel on the day of the winter solstice, similar to the groove on the Sun Stone. In the hour marking of sundial slabs from the Northern Black Sea region and Western Balkans, continuity can be traced, confirming the dating of the XV-XII centuries BC and indicating contacts of representatives of the synchronous local Glasinac culture of the Western Balkans with representatives of the Srubnaya culture of the Northern Black Sea region. Arhaeoastronomical analysis of Levinsadovka sacrificial complex (South Russia)

The article presents research data using arhaeoastronomical methods of Levinsadovka settlement sacrificial complex in Northern Black Sea coast. In this work, new method of accounting terrain elevations using topographic maps was developed in arhaeoastronomical studies. Calculations of azimuths of the sun and moon rise and set in the astronomically significant moments of the year were made and astronomical regularities in the organization of the sacrificial complex identified. Related to the moon directions, as the most dedicated, identified. Revealed that the stone tools and fragments, used as sacrifices, mark the direction to the northern minor standstill moonrise. A similar situation was found on two archaeological sites: in Bezymennoye II settlement South sanctuary and in Pustynka settlement religious building. Drawing on ethnographic and folklore data, it is concluded about semiotic connection of stone tools, found in these religious constructions, with the "thunderstones" and meteorites.ut semiotic connection of stone tools, found in these religious constructions, with the "thunderstones" and meteorites.

Russian meteorite Bronze Age (rock record)

This paper presents the results of a study of petroglyphs found in the quartzite grotto near the Skelnovsky small village in the Northern Black Sea in the South of Russia. The aim of the study was the analysis and interpretation of the Early Bronze Age petroglyphs using archaeoastronomical methods. The article presents a comparative analysis of Skelnovsky grotto ancient images and contemporary eyewitness accounts of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall and meteorite shower. Some petroglyphs were interpreted by us using ethnographic and folklore material. In this study, the magnetic declination for the geographical coordinates Skelnovsky farm was calculated, and the projection of the whole picture Skelnovskih petroglyphs on the topographical map of the area was built. The proposed location of the meteorite fall was determined with this projection. It is confirmed by satellite pictures, on which are the distinguishable terrain features, typical for the meteorite fall, are visible including the possible impact crater, and the corresponding symbols on a topographical map. The studies in the article conclude the astronomical character of the main content of the Skelnovsky petroglyphs picture which depicts the fall of a large meteoroid (bolide), similar to the Sikhote-Alin meteorite, accompanied by a meteorite shower. After a comparative analysis of the images in Sklenovsky Grotto it was discovered that the petroglyph is a copy of the figure depicted on the famous Mesopotamic clay tablet YBC 7289. We speculate that this figure is a prototype of an important building used either for ritual or farm purposes, typical for the Bronze Age and distributed as in Mesopotamia, as also on the coast of the Northern Black Sea. archaeoastronomy, petroglyphs, rock art, meteoroid, meteorite shower, impact crater, Babylonian clay tablet YBC 7289

Analemmatic and Horizontal Sundials of the Bronze Age (Northern Black Sea Coast)

The paper presents the results of a study of unique plate with images of Srubna burial of tumuli group Popov Yar-2 (Ukraine) and plate of Srubna burial of tumulus field Tavriya-1 (Russia). A distinctive feature of the images is the orderliness and symmetry of the composition, as well as the location of elliptical cupped depressions. With the help of mathematical and astronomical methods we prove in this paper that the plates with the images are the ancient sundials. At the Popov Yar-2 plate located two sundials, which worked at the same time: the analemmatic sundial and the horizontal sundial with two gnomons and the linear scale. At the Tavriya-1 plate located analemmatic sundial. On the basis of the reconstruction of the linear parameters of the gnomon of both Popov Yar-2 plate sundials and given the scale value of horizontal sundial, in the article that the potential indirect impact protoscientific knowledge of ancient Egypt to the Srubna population in the Northern Black Sea coast. Ancient astronomical instrument from Srubna burial of kurgan field Tavriya-1 (Northern Black Sea Coast)

The article presents the results of analysis of the spatial arrangement of the wells on the unique slab from Srubna burial of kurgan field Tavriya-1 (Rostov region, Russia) by astronomical methods. At the slab revealed two interrelated groups of wells, one of which - in the form of a circle, is proposed to interpret how analemmatic sundial, and second group, consisting of disparate wells, as auxiliary astronomical markers of rising luminaries directions, to correct the position of the gnomon. Simultaneous location of both groups of wells on the same slab is a possible indication of one of the stages of development of the design features analemmatic sundial - setting movable gnomon and technology of measuring time with it. It may point to local origin, as the very idea of analemmatic sundial as well technology measurement of time with them. The article also describes the model analemmatic sundial, hour marks which in many cases coincide with the wells arranged in a circle, particularly in a working range from 6 to 18 hours. In the study proposed a method which can identify moments of solstices and equinoxes in ancient times with the help of the gnomon of analemmatic sundial and mobile gnomons, installed in wells belonging to the second group. The opportunity of use analemmatic sundial as moondial in a full moon night. Slab with two groups of wells is proposed to consider, as the oldest astronomical instrument discovered in the Northern Black Sea coast, which allowed to observe the apparent motion of the Sun and the Moon and allowed measure the time during the day, using analemmatic sundial and at night during the full Moon - with the help of moondial. Keywords: analemmatic sundial, moondial, srubna burial, slab, wells, cupped depressions, gnomon, model, technology, astronomical methods, archaeoastronomy.
