PIC simulations of laser-induced proton acceleration by resonant nanoantennas for fusion

Rapid recent development in laser technology and methods learned from relativistic heavy ion physics led to new possibilities for fusion. Using a Hydrogen rich UDMA-TEGDMA polymer fusion target, laser irradiation ionizes the target. If we implant nanoantennas into the target resonating to the laser light frequency massive number of electrons of the ionized plasma resonate within the nanoantenna forming a so called nanoplasmonic wave. Our kinetic model simulation with a Hydrogen target indicates that the field of these resonating electrons attracts and accelerates the surrounding protons of the plasma to multi-MeV energy. These protons are then energetic enough to achieve nuclear transmutation and fusion reactions. Without resonating nanoantenna there is no such collective proton acceleration, no energetic protons, and nuclear reactions at 30 mJ laser pulse energy.

Kinetic Model Evaluation of Dynamical Properties of Nanaorod Antennas Embedded in a Polymer Carrying the Nuclei of Fusion Fuel

Recently laser induced fusion with simultaneous volume ignition, a spin-off from relativistic heavy ion collisions, was proposed, where implanted nanoantennas regulated and amplified the light absorption in the fusion target. Studies of resilience of the nanoantennas was published recently in vacuum. These studies are extended to nanoantennas embedded into a polymer, which modifies the nanoantenna's lifetime and absorption properties.

Thermal production of sexaquarks in heavy-ion collisions

We present new results on the thermal production yield of a hypothetical state made of six quarks $uuddss$ assuming its production in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. A state with this quark content and mass low enough to be stable against decay in timescales of the order of the age of the Universe, has been hypothesized by one of us (G.F.) and has been discussed as a possible dark matter candidate. In this work we address for the first time the thermal production rate that can be expected for this state in heavy-ion collisions at colliders. For this estimate we use a thermal model which has been shown to describe accurately the production of hadrons and nuclei in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy. This estimate is of great relevance for sexaquark searches at colliders as well as for its consideration as a dark matter candidate and for the composition of neutron stars.

Laser Wake Field Collider

Recently NAano-Plasmonic, Laser Inertial Fusion Experiments (NAPLIFE) were proposed, as an improved way to achieve laser driven fusion. The improvement is the combination of two basic research discoveries: (i) The possibility of detonations on space-time hyper-surfaces with time-like normal (i.e. simultaneous detonation in a whole volume) and (ii) to increase this volume to the whole target, by regulating the laser light absorption using nano-shells or nano-rods as antennas. These principles can be realized in an in-line, one dimensional configuration, in the simplest way with two opposing laser beams as in particle colliders. Such, opposing laser beam experiments were also performed recently. Here we study the consequences of the Laser Wake Field Acceleration (LWFA) if we experience it in a colliding laser beam set up. These studies can be applied to laser driven fusion, but also to other rapid phase transition, combustion, or ignition studies in other materials.

Nuclear suppression at RHIC and LHC in Glauber-Gribov approach

The approach to problem of nuclear shadowing based on Gribov Reggeon calculus is presented. Here the total cross section of $h A$ interaction is found in a parameter-free description, employing the new data on the gluon density of the Pomeron, measured with high precision at HERA, as input. The model is then applied for calculation of $J/ψ$ production in $d Au$ collisions at top RHIC energy. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are in a very good agreement with the PHENIX data, and further predictions for the $J/ψ$ suppression in $p Pb$ collisions at coming soon LHC are made.

Strangeness Enhancement in Heavy Ion Collisions - Evidence for Quark-Gluon-Matter ?

The centrality dependence of (multi-)strange hadron abundances is studied for Pb(158 AGeV)Pb reactions and compared to p(158 GeV)Pb collisions. The microscopic transport model UrQMD is used for this analysis. The predicted Lambda/pi-, Xi-/pi- and Omega-/pi- ratios are enhanced due to rescattering in central Pb-Pb collisions as compared to peripheral Pb-Pb or p-Pb collisions. A reduction of the constituent quark masses to the current quark masses m_s \sim 230 MeV, m_q \sim 10 MeV, as motivated by chiral symmetry restoration, enhances the hyperon yields to the experimentally observed high values. Similar results are obtained by an ad hoc overall increase of the color electric field strength (effective string tension of kappa=3 GeV/fm). The enhancement depends strongly on the kinematical cuts. The maximum enhancement is predicted around midrapidity. For Lambda's, strangeness suppression is predicted at projectile/target rapidity. For Omega's, the predicted enhancement can be as large as one order of magnitude. Comparisons of Pb-Pb data to proton induced asymmetric (p-A) collisions are hampered due to the predicted strong asymmetry in the various rapidity distributions of the different (strange) particle species. In p-Pb collisions, strangeness is locally (in rapidity) not conserved. The present comparison to the data of the WA97 and NA49 collaborations clearly supports the suggestion that conventional (free) hadronic scenarios are unable to describe the observed high (anti-)hyperon yields in central collisions. The doubling of the strangeness to nonstrange suppression factor, gamma_s \approx 0.65, might be interpreted as a signal of a phase of nearly massless particles.
