Quarkyonic Matter and Neutron Stars

We consider Quarkyonic Matter to naturally explain the observed properties of neutron stars. We argue that such matter might exist at densities close to that of nuclear matter and at the onset, the pressure and the sound velocity in Quarkyonic matter increase rapidly. In the limit of large number of quark colors $N_c$, this transition is characterized by a discontinuous change in pressure as a function of baryon number density. We make a simple model of Quarkyonic matter and show that generically the sound velocity is a non-monotonic function of density -- it reaches a maximum at relatively low density, decreases, and then increases again to its asymptotic value of $1/\sqrt{3}$.

Odd Azimuthal Anisotropy of the Glasma for pA Scattering

In this paper we analytically extract the odd azimuthal anisotropy in the Classical Yang-Mills equations for the Glasma for pA collisions. We compute the first non-trivial term in the expansion of the proton sources of color charge. The computation is valid in the limit of a large nucleus when the produced particle momenta are larger than the saturation momentum of the proton.

The Large N Limit with Vanishing Leading Order Condensate for Zero Pion Mass

It is conventionally assumed that the negative mass squared term in the linear sigma model version of the pion Lagrangian is $M^2 \sim Λ_{\rm QCD}^2$ in powers of $N_c$. We consider the case where $M^2 \sim Λ^2_{\rm QCD}/N_c$ so that to leading order in $N_c$ this symmetry breaking term vanishes. We present some arguments why this might be plausible. One might think that such a radical assumption would contradict lattice Monte Carlo data on QCD as function of $N_c$. We show that the linear sigma model gives a fair description of the data of DeGrand and Liu both for $N_c = 3$, and for variable $N_c$. The values of quark masses considered by DeGrand and Liu, and by Bali et. al. turn out to be too large to resolve the case we consider from that of the conventional large $N_c$ limit. We argue that for quark masses $m_{q} \ll Λ_{\rm QCD}/N_c^{3/2}$, both the baryon mass and nucleon size scale as $\sqrt{N_c}$. For $m_{q} \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}/N_c^{3/2}$ the conventional large-$N_c$ counting holds. The physical values of quark masses for QCD correspond to the small quark mass limit. We find pion-nucleon coupling strengths are reduced to order ${\cal O}(1)$ rather than ${\cal O}(N_c)$. Under the assumption that in the large $N_c$ limit the sigma meson mass is larger than that of the omega, and that the omega-nucleon coupling constant is larger than that of the sigma, we argue that the nucleon-nucleon large range potential is weakly attractive and admits an interaction energy of order $Λ_{\rm QCD}/N_c^{5/2} \sim 10$ MeV. With these assumptions on coupling and masses, there is no strong long range attractive channel for nucleon-nucleon interactions, so that nuclear matter at densities much smaller than that where nucleons strongly interact is a weakly interacting configuration of nucleons with strongly interacting localized cores.

From the Glasma to the QCD Phase Boundary

In this paper, I qualitatively discuss the matter formed in the fragmentation region of nuclear collisions at the highest energies. I argue that although the initial temperature and baryon number density can become very large, the ratio of initial baryon chemical potential to initial temperature is approximately independent of energy, when measured at a fixed rapidity measured from the end of the fragmentation region. This quantity is argued to be roughly invariant under expansion, and therefore the value measured at decoupling should be approximately the same as the initial value and largely independent of energy. The values of the initial temperature and initial baryon number are energy dependent and become large as the center of mass collision energy increases.

Fluctuations and the rapidity dependence of charged particles spectra in fixed centrality bins in p$A$ collisions

We argue that large fluctuations in the saturation momentum are necessary to explain the ATLAS and ALICE data on pA collisions measured at the LHC. Using a form for the distribution of fluctuations motivated by theoretical studies of the non-linear evolution equations for the Color Glass Condensate, we find a remarkably good agreement between theory and the measured distributions. If the saturation momentum fluctuates, we argue that the cross section for a proton probe should also fluctuate, consistent with previous observations. Finally we discuss these results and their possible consistency with what is known about multiplicity fluctuations in such collisions, and attempts to describe the ridge effect from properties of the initial state.

The MV Model of the Color Glass Condensate for a Finite Number of Sources Including Coulomb Interactions

We modify the McLerran-Venugopalan model to include only a finite number of sources of color charge. We argue that Coulombic interactions between these color charges generates a source-source correlation function that properly includes the effects of color charge screening, a generalization of Debye screening for the Color Glass Condensate. Such a model may be useful for computing angular harmonics of flow measured in high energy hadron collisions for small systems. In this paper we provide a basic formulation of the problem on a lattice.

Intrinsic Fluctuations of the Proton Saturation Momentum Scale in High Multiplicity p+p Collisions

High multiplicity events in p+p collisions are studied using the theory of the Color Glass Condensate. We show that intrinsic fluctuations of the proton saturation momentum scale are needed in addition to the sub-nucleonic color charge fluctuations to explain the very high multiplicity tail of distributions in p+p collisions. The origin of such intrinsic fluctuations are presumably non-perturbative in nature. Classical Yang Mills simulations using the IP-Glasma model are performed to make quantitative estimations. We find that fluctuations as large as $\cal O$(1) of the average values of the saturation momentum scale can lead to rare high multiplicity events seen in p+p data at RHIC and LHC energies. Using the available data on multiplicity distributions we try to constrain the distribution of the proton saturation momentum scale and make predictions for the multiplicity distribution in 13 TeV p+p collisions.

Finite Numbers of Sources, Particle Correlations and the Color Glass Condensate

We show that for a finite number of emitting sources, the Color Glass Condensate produces substantial elliptic azimuthal anisotropy, characterized by $v_2$, for two and four particle correlations for momentum greater than or of the order the saturation momentum. The flow produced has the correct semi-quantitative features to describe flow seen in LHC experiments with p-Pb and pp collisions. This flow is induced by quantum mechanical interference between the waves of produced particles, and the flow itself is coupled to fluctuations in the positions of emitting sources. We shortly discuss generalizing these results to odd $v_n$, to correlations involving larger number of particles, and to transverse momentum scales $Λ_{\rm QCD} \ll p_T \ll Q_{\rm sat}$.

A Tale of Tails: Photon Rates and Flow in Ultra-Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We consider the possibility that quark and gluon distributions in the medium created in high energy heavy ion collisions may be modified by a power law tail at energies much higher than the temperature. We parametrize such a tail by Tsallis distributions with an exponent motivated by phenomenology. These distributions are characterized by an effective temperature scale that we assume to evolve in time like the temperature for thermal distributions. We find that including such a tail increases the rates for photon production and significantly delays the emission times for photons of a fixed energy. We argue that these effects are sufficiently large that they should be able to account for photon yields and flow patterns seen in LHC and RHIC experiments.

Azimuthal asymmetries and the emergence of "collectivity" from multi-particle correlations in high-energy pA collisions

We show how angular asymmetries $\sim\cos 2ϕ$ can arise in dipole scattering at high energies. We illustrate the effects due to anisotropic fluctuations of the saturation momentum of the target with a finite correlation length in the transverse impact parameter plane, i.e.\ from a domain-like structure. We compute the two-particle azimuthal cumulant in this model including both one-particle factorizable as well as genuine two-particle non-factorizable contributions to the two-particle cross section. We also compute the full BBGKY hierarchy for the four-particle azimuthal cumulant and find that only the fully factorizable contribution to $c_2\{4\}$ is negative while all contributions from genuine two, three and four-particle correlations are positive. Our results may provide some qualitative insight into the origin of azimuthal asymmetries in p+Pb collisions at the LHC which reveal a change of sign of $c_2\{4\}$ in high-multiplicity events.

Geometrical Scaling and the Dependence of the Average Transverse Momentum on the Multiplicity and Energy for the ALICE Experiment

We review the recent ALICE data on charged particle multiplicity in p-p collisions, and show that it exhibits Geometrical Scaling (GS) with energy dependence given with characteristic exponent $λ=0.22$. Next, starting from the GS hypothesis and using results of the Color Glass Condensate effective theory, we calculate $< p_{\text{T}}>$ as a function $N_{\rm ch}$ including dependence on the scattering energy $W$. We show that $< p_{\text{T}}>$ both in p-p and p-Pb collisions scales in terms of scaling variable $(W/W_{0})^{λ/(2+λ)}% \sqrt{N_{\mathrm{ch}}/S_{\bot}}$ where $S_{\bot}$ is multiplicity dependent interaction area in the transverse plane. Furthermore, we discuss how the behavior of the interaction radius $R$ at large multiplicities affects the mean $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ dependence on $N_{\rm ch}$, and make a prediction that $< p_{\text{T}}>$ at high multiplicity should reach an energy independent limit.

The Electroweak Axion, Dark Energy, Inflation and Baryonic Matter

In a previous paper, the standard model was generalized to include an electroweak axion which carries baryon plus lepton number, $B+L$. It was shown that such a model naturally gives the observed value of the dark energy, if the scale of explicit baryon number violation was chosen to be of the order of the Planck mass. In this paper, we consider the effect of the modulus of the axion field. Such a field must condense in order to generate the standard Goldstone boson associated with the phase of the axion field. This condensation breaks baryon number. We argue that this modulus might be associated with inflation. If an additional $B-L$ violating scalar is introduced with a mass similar to that of the modulus of the axion field, we argue that decays of particles associated with this field might generate an acceptable baryon asymmetry.

A Phenomenological Model of the Glasma and Photon Production

I discuss a phenomenological model for the Glasma. I introduce over occupied distributions for gluons, and compute their time evolution. I use this model to estimate the ratio of quarks to gluons and the entropy production as functions of time. I then discuss photon production at RHIC and LHC, and how geometric scaling and the Glasma might explain generic features of such production.

The Eccentric Collective BFKL Pomeron

We apply the flow analysis for multi-particle correlations used in heavy ion collisions to multi-particle production from a Pomeron. We show that the n'th order angular harmonic arising from an m particle correlation v_n[m] satisfies v_n[m] ~ v_n[p] for n $\ge$ 1. We discuss some implications of this for the Color Glass Condensate description of high energy hadronic collisions.

Geometrical Scaling of Direct-Photon Production in Hadron Collisions from RHIC to the LHC

We consider pp, dAu and AuAu production of photons at RHIC energies, and PbPb collisions at LHC energy. We show that the inclusive spectrum of photons in the transverse momentum range of 1 GeV < pT <= 4 GeV satisfies geometric scaling. Geometric scaling is a property of hadronic interactions predicted by theories of gluon saturation, and expresses rates in terms of dimensionless ratios of the transverse momentum to saturation momentum. We show excellent agreement with geometric scaling with the only input being the previously measured dependence of the saturation momentum upon Bjorken x and centrality.

The Glasma, Photons and the Implications of Anisotropy

We introduce distribution functions for quarks and gluons in the Glasma and discuss how they satisfy various relationships of statistical physics. We use these distributions to compute photon production in the early stages of heavy ion collisions. Photon rates satisfy geometric scaling, that is, the emission rate per unit area scales as a function of the saturation momenta divided by the transverse momentum of the photon. Photon distributions from the Glasma are steeper than those computed in the Thermalized Quark Gluon Plasma (TQGP). Both the delayed equilibration of the Glasma and a possible anisotropy in the pressure lead to slower expansion and mean times of photon emission of fixed energy are increased. This delayed emission might allow for larger photon elliptic flow.

Fluctuation induced equality of multi-particle eccentricities for four or more particles

We discuss eccentricities (ellipticity and triangularity) generated in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. We define multi-particle eccentricities $ε_n\{m\}$ which are associated with the $n'th$ angular multipole moment for $m$ particles. We show that in the limit of fluctuation dominance all of the $ε_n\{m\}$'s are approximately equal for $m \ge 4$. For dynamics linearly responding to these eccentricities such as hydrodynamics or proposed in this paper weakly interacting field theory, these relations among eccentricities are translated into relations among flow moments $v_n\{m\}$. We explicitly demonstrate it with hydrodynamic calculations.

Are the Angular Correlations in pA Collisions due to a Glasmion or Bose Condensation ?

Experiments at the LHC have recently reported results on the angular asymmetry coefficients $v_n[m]$, for various angular moments $n$ and orders of cumulants $m$, in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions. These coefficients are large, and have both even and odd moments. We discuss here some of the implications of these results for our understanding of the initial state of the collision (Color Glass Condensate) and for the evolution in the final state (Glasma and thermalized Quark Gluon Plasma). We show the Color Glass Condensate predicts large even moments, $v_n$ with $n$ an even integer. Odd moments are generated by final state interactions or fragmentation. For a multi-particle determination of $v_2[m]$, where m is the number of particles used to determine the correlation, we argue that if these coefficients approach equality for large $m$ in high multiplicity events, this may imply the existence of either solitonic solutions or Bose condensation either for the JIMWLK action that describes the CGC, or for the Glasma that might be produced in such a collision.
